POW! I dive left to go for the save. The game had just ended and we were now in the penalty shootout. I had to make so many saves in the game to get us to a PK shootout. Back in March, my parents signed me up for the soccer camp with a friend. Last year my parents won a ticket for the soccer camp, at first I did not want to go but since the camp was full and there were no other tickets I had to go so I did. After the first two days I really liked the camp, by the end of it I realized that it would have been more fun with a friend. This year we got a friend that could go to it this time. There were supposed to be three of us, but one of the friend’s parent forgot to sign their kid into the camp. This was my most unforgettable week of my life because this was just such a good camp, plus I got one of my highlights of my goalie career to me. The camp that I went to was at Dail soccer/track complex at NC State University. It had a baseball field right next to it with a camp going on for softball. It also took place on the other two fields across the street, yet there is a tunnel underneath the street that we took. For the games for overtime it did not work the same as normal we went straight to the penalty shootout, instead of having two overtime periods. This week happened to me because my parents were able to sign me up for the camp. My parents learned about the camp from last year. They had won a ticket into the camp and since it was sold out my parents looked at the web page for it to see what it was about and thought I would enjoy it, so I went to it. On the first day of camp we went and filled everything out so I could have fun and any insurance for the camp, I don't know I went to the camp to have fun I did not pay any attention to the signing in anything else to start the camp. After that, I went and found my group I was supposed to be in which turned out to be the second goalie group. In the second goalie group, we were more like a group of people that have some problems with ourselves. Most of the people in our group would talk when our coach talked or wanted them to pay attention. Then there were the other people, like me, in the group who wanted to get as far as possible in training and wanted to
Soccer always been a great part of my life. I play it since, I was three years old. My greatest moment was the final game of the district tournament. It was the first time for me and my teammates to make it that far. I had to act like I got it all under control since I was the captain of the team but I was shaking until the game started. The game went by fast, it was the minute 89 and it was a draw one to ne after my friend’s header goal from the corner kick. We had two minutes before we go to extra time and everyone in the field already so exhausted. The other team had the ball, and I was at the center back, I ran and cut the ball from the other team, I began running as fast as I can. I was not sure either to pass it or keep
As I stood on the field, sweat dripping down my face, it all came down to this moment. Going to practice for months, the bruises, the pain, it was all preparing me for this altering moment. I’m a soccer goalie, that in itself is a big responsibility, but tonight my team was counting on me to lead them to victory. We just played a full 90-minute game only to be tied two to two. I stood in between the goal posts, people cheering my name, as a member from the opposing team walked closer. Since we tied we are in a penalty shootout, the outcome of the game is decided on this one kick. See, being a goalie is a big responsibility, but during a shootout, that's when it gets unbearably stressful. The odds are not in a goalie’s favor. There is only an eighteen percent chance that the goalie will stop the penalty kick, but I was beating those odds because I already blocked two out of four shots. I just needed to block one more, one more and we win the gold medal, we win first place. As the player walks closer to me, the cheering of the crowd slowly dissipates. All I hear is my heart pounding out of my chest. It all comes down to this final whistle signaling the kicker to begin. I felt unstoppable, this was my moment to shine, this was when I became the hero for my team. The referee blew
Two years ago I played my first high school soccer season and it was one of the best experiences I had related with this sport, but what made it special was the last game we faced. Just like Forrest Gump quoted, “Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re gonna get.” This is how the surprise started; some friends and I were moved up from freshman team to the JV team and we were excited to compete for some game time. Even though we had very low chances, we gave our 100% in the few training sessions we had to earn a spot. Friday night arrived; I was frightened and shocked to face the best team in our district.
On one fall morning, my mom and I arrived at the Hulmeville Soccer Tournament. There were so many teams that had great potential to win. My teammates and I Were excited to play theses teams and push our skills to the limit. Our soccer team won all five games that we played. Therefore we made it to the championship angist Hulmeville, one of the best teams in the tournament. The game started and there were no goals scored. Since it was the finals, we went
At that moment I realized that I had to add something to my game in order to stand out. I soon learned that practice and physicality could only make me better. Freshman year came around and i didn't have a coach that was willing to support me and help me develop into the player i know i am today. Its been a whirlwind of emotions with all the pain and failure I've experienced since my freshman year, when i watched the team go 4-11, To say the least i didn't get a single game but that only taught me to fight harder for what i wanted. Sophomore year came around, and with that a new coaching staff that gave me an opportunity to shine from day one. At the beginning of my sophomore season i thought i wasn't meant to be a goalkeeper, so i switched to attack, after a few games, i didn't like it and my coach could see that i was frustrated not being able to settle in. During a game against Flanagan High School, our goalie let in two goals in a matter of seconds, and our coach
As the next few weeks flew by I decided to join recreation. And guess who was my coach? My mom!! I wasn't that bad After some time when recreation was finished, I was eager to keep playing through the winter. We found another team a little bit further away but that was okay . We pulled up to the place. “Welcome to Dutch Total Field Hockey”, the sign read. “Why would they name a place Dutch Total Field Hockey?”, I thought. As we walked further into the dome a lady greeted us, “ Hello and welcome to Dutch Total Field Hockey. I am Ingrid.”, she explained in a strong accent. I thought she would be my new coach. After weeks of training I became used to the giant bubble, otherwise known as the dome. I was getting the hang of it and wanted so badly to continue playing so after a few more months I was enjoying every minute I played! When the summer rolled around I was ready for field hockey camp! By that time I knew everyone there and they all knew me. I loved field hockey camp so much and continued wIth their program during the fall. One afternoon after practice was over, I received an envelope with my name on it. I showed my mom and we found out they wanted me for their select team. I was so excited I was glowing with
We were all set up on the field ready for the game, I remember closing my eyes forabout a minute before the game started, that minute felt like 10 years, I froze and thought aboutmyself when I was 3 years old and how I first fell in love with the game and how my ultimatedream was to become pro, I remember the hours of pain and suffering I put myself through tobecome the player I was today, I remembered waking up at 4 a.m. on school mornings to go forruns so that I could run longer in games,I remember skipping parties and hanging with friendsso that I could train, I remembered everything, but one thing truly hit me was how much soccerwas there for me growing up my parents argued a lot and when I was feeling sad and lonely Iwould go train at the fields and it would hell my sorrow. Growing up in a household when yourparents are constantly fighting is difficult, but soccer was my out lit it was my therapist. Duringthe time of their divorce I felt like I had no one but soccer so I decided I need to give back to thegame. Soccer did so much for me, so I wanted to prove to it that it wasn't a waste of time andthat I would make something out of the game. I opened my eyes and didn't feel human anymore Ididn't feel in control of my own body the sport had taken over me for the better. I remembermoments when I was running and it didn't even feel like my feet were touching the floor
We were playing Mountain Valley, a team we lost to earlier in the year by a score of 1-0. My soccer team did not lose very often. We lost once in the regular season in all of my high school career. So my team and I wanted revenge. We wanted this game more than anything. They had 4 foreign exchange players on their team and we knew how good they were. We knew it wouldn't be easy to win but we knew that it was possible. We had no right in winning the game. We got dominated in every aspect of it. They probably outshot us 100-1 or at least thats what it felt like. We ended up tied at 0 after 80 minutes of regulation and 10 minutes of overtime. We ended up gong into penalty kicks. We eventually won the game but it wasn't until the 20th kick that we won. It was one of the best feelings.
In Boy Scouts the new troop will always do a campout for the new scouts that is relatively easy for them, and is there to introduce new members to the people that are leaders and other administrators. I joined a few weeks early that winter and joined the other scouts at Camp Emerson. Camp Emerson, in the winter is a cold place with up to three feet of snow. When I took my first trip with the scouts, there was a record amount of snow. I slept in a tent that we had to dig out of the snow a few mornings, then hiked our way to the frozen lake to learn not only about surviving but prospering in the harshest conditions with little to no gear. This was one of the most insightful and miserable experience of my life, but to this day I’m proud that I thrived at the event made for boys four year my senior, and earned the respect of those same boys. While I loved the Boy Scouts it was time for my family to move out of California to a more rural community. After this momentous change I was disappointed to find no active Boy Scout community near my new location. I have continued my work with the Backcountry Horsemen, but my new chapter is far less active than my
Right after the season ended my dad got a call from the head coach (Coach Bryant) and was told that I didn’t even have to go to the tryout. I was one of the only kids the didn’t have to go to the tryout I was already on the team. About a week later we had our first practice, it was kind of cool to see all of the kids that got picked to be on this team. It surprised me to see my coach from last year (Coach Colton) because I thought he was coaching the team I was on last year. The other coach (Coach Tony) I knew because our old team practiced with his old team. I also knew most of the kids on the
As the striker stepped back to take the penalty kick, I planted my feet on the ground. I watched in anticipation as she ran up to the ball and watched it fly towards the goal in slow motion, guessing which direction it will go. Though I have played goalkeeper for 10 years, nothing I did then would have changed the motion of the ball soaring towards the goal. Only the hard work I had done in the weeks prior could affect it, because the goalkeeper in goal was a player I coached.
This year, as a freshman, I decided to try out for a sport. I heard about field hockey and I was instantaneously intrigued. I asked some friends when was conditioning and went to the first one. There was only one other freshman at conditioning and so many upperclassmen. I was absolutely terrified because I didn't know anyone (except the other freshman, but I didn't even know her that well.) They were much older than me and very intimidating. I feared the upperclassmen due to thinking that I could never compete with them. Nevertheless, I came to every conditioning I could. I met some of the older girls and made a bunch of friends. I heard one of the other girls were talking about captains practice, so I bought a stick and went to the first practice.
•It was finally time for the 1995 World Cup in Sweden. With only six minutes left in the game, April Henrichs the assistant coach decided to put me as goalkeeper because our goalie had been evicted for a technical violation.I was so nervous and thought
On June 1st, 2015 my soccer team played in a game we would never forget. In the beginning of the day, we had played against three teams and beat them all. We were all ecstatic after receiving the news that we were playing in the championship game. Our opponents had been our main rivals for years. Watching the crowd fill the bleachers fueled our excitement. As the game began, we were all filled with nervous energy. The time ticked by to the last ten minutes of the game, and we were tied one to one. During the last two minutes of the game, I received the ball and kicked it to the back of the net. Everyone was celebrating, and all the parents were cheering us on.Knowing that I had a part in helping my team gain the title
I was thinking now is the time to push harder and give it my all. A few minutes later, the captain of the team blasts past all my players and comes in on a breakaway. I push out to the top of my crease and put my gloves up right out in front doing my best to look big and tall. The girl made a pump fake and took it to her backhand and I push my blocker out and make an incredible save. The crowd goes wild again, the ice rink is full of energy. At the end of the first period, the score is tight it's 1-1 and I can't wait to get back in net. My goalie coach, Anj, tells me to keep it up and not to take my foot off the gas pedal. I skate back to my net grinning from ear to ear, my teammate and friend Vail comes and skates by and tells me that I'm
