During my senior year of high school, I encountered many obstacles. One of the biggest obstacles was certainly applying to colleges and figuring out what I wanted to major in. It was a task I needed to complete on my own. My parents did not go to college, so they were helpless in the application process. I was also under the impression that my older sisters were going to assist me, but they were too busy with their own classes and work. The pressure was on, and time was ticking. I knew if I waited too long that I was going to hinder my chances of going to college at all and become a disappointment to my parents. A couple years ago, I read all the “The Lord of the Rings” books, but one day, TNT showed “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship
For first year students coming straight from high school, college life can either be very exciting or overwhelming depending on how well one prepares for it. Some have the notion that college is fun and is all about partying, while some believe that it is an environment in which they can achieve the ultimate freedom thus escape the stringent rules made by their parents at home. Others look forward to experiencing a different learning environment while being exposed to different cultures and sharing different academic knowledge. Successful assimilation into college life is determined by the student’s capability to transform into the new role of a college student. Numerous students face challenges they have never experienced before which can
Throughout high school, numerous students have obstacles that they go through that end up affecting their educational journey. For myself, my hurdle was learning to cope with having a job, playing sports and being a part of school clubs all while sustaining worthy grades.
Life is all about choices, and the one choice I knew I wanted to make was to go to college and achieve my educational goals. Knowing that my family could not support my two older sister’s college endeavors let alone mine, I knew I had to act. Throughout my high school years, I applied myself constantly through taking challenging coursework and involving myself in clubs that I was passionate for. All of those years led me to overcome the biggest obstacle a senior student
When I was in middle high school, I wasn’t like any other kids my age I knew. It seemed like all the kids new what they wanted to do in life. Most of my classmates had a mindset that they were going to college, but I was focused more on graduating middle school so that I can make it to high school. By the time I made it to high school, there was more pressure on me to think about going to college. My parents wanted me to further my education. My mother asked me if I was thinking about college yet. At that point, I didn’t know what I wanted to do. I was confused so I
In this paper I will be explaining my biggest failure, how I was affected, and what I learned from this failure. I know there will be more failures in my life but at this time my biggest failure has been the many failed tests and assignments at the Early College. Most of my failures have been caused by my own procrastination.
The thought of leaving home and going off to college makes me excited as well as terrified for how I will ever survive without my parents. In the article written by Randall S. Hansen and empowering entrepreneur, college students are informed of twenty-five tips on surviving and thriving throughout college. “Actually, it doesn’t really matter what you did in high school as you make the transition to college”(Hansen), freshman year is a time to start over, a clean slate to grow from. Furthermost, college is meant for students to thrive rather than set students up for failure. There are many statistics showing the graduation rates as well as continuation after freshman year, “don’t be a statistic; be determined

Encouraged by my English teacher, one of the few teachers to ever talk to me about furthering my education, I decided to apply to college during the fall of my senior year. I was reluctant to apply at first because I was never able to envision myself being able to pursue a college education, as a high school diploma was the highest educational level any of my family members ever obtained. Throughout my entire life and time in school, I had never received any guidance on pursuing higher education. In fact, I was completely unaware of the steps I needed to take to further my education. Both my parents dropped out of school before the sixth grade, thus they could not provide any
Until I reached high school, my parents never stressed about college. They never talked about college and majors or even scholarships. Moreover, I believed college was a dream, something that I shouldn’t pay much attention to. However, I desired to attend college, and at that time I assumed I would major in a math or science, or even become an engineer. My assumptions grew from my sister, who planned on being an engineer. When I entered high school, my sister began to stress about my education after high school to my parents considering her dream that I would become a success compared to her. Since my mother wasn’t informed on how our college system works in terms of how to apply and the importance of majors, she truly believed my sister’s
These past four years in high school have been full of obstacles for me. My freshmen year my parents were going through a divorce and it was a big transition for us as a family; my mom had a hard time maintaining jobs and I had to grow up quick to help out around the house. The next few years my mom struggled with many different problems in her life which led to her getting evicted amongst other things. I moved in with my dad permanently and now life at home is getting better. I struggled with many things at home through high school but as I reach the end of my senior year those obstacles have only made me a better person. College is something my family is nervous about because my dad is raising four kids on his own and will have trouble supporting
Following the completion of high school I faced many obstacles. I was very eager to attend college, however me nor my parents where in the financial position to pay for my college expenses. Determined to make my dreams a reality I decided to get a second job, as taking out a student loan was not an option. I was unable to save the sufficient funds needed to attend college that semester, but I was able to attend that following spring. At this time it was difficult to manage the stresses of holding a full time job and being a new full time student, but I managed to overcome these challenges by simply planning my time wisely and prioritizing my life.
I found out the hard way that if I did not study for a test I would fail and if I did not study a certain way as well I would also fail. It was frustrating for me because despite all my efforts and long hours of studying I would still get low grades at school. After going to several workshops and asking for help I was finally able to turn my education around and get good grades. The workshops taught me how to be organized and create helpful study habits. You don’t become a college student just by going to school and attending classes. You become a college student when you prepare for class and understand what the professor is talking about by studying, reading, and doing homework. The day I found out that I could graduate within one year, I went to talk to my counsellor and applied for a course overload petition to be to take more than sixteen units. The reason why I wanted to graduate so fast is because college is expensive and by getting a course overload I would save about two thousand dollars’ worth of tuition. Taking twenty units a quarter was difficult, but I have been through worse situations over the past few years. The end of the road was finally near and nothing but joy surrounded me. Now my family does not look at me as a bad influence, but a role model. My aunts who did not let me hang around with their children now tell them to follow in my footsteps and go to college. Even
My primary concern regarding college is how I am going to be able to pay for it. I have had a job since I was fourteen. My parents are middle class and very responsible when it comes to their finances and have taught me well. Funding my college career will be my responsibility. Because my parents have been financially responsible there is a very good chance I will not get any federal or unsubsidized financial aid.
About halfway through my junior year, I told my parents I wanted to go to college. I craved more knowledge than I had and the thought of meeting new people and making connections was irresistible. To be honest, I cried when I told my parents. I expected them to be unsupportive and degrading, but they were not. Of course they were supportive and all for me going for higher education. From there I took the
