My Passion As A Pediatric Nurse

The main reason why I knew Pediatric Registered Nursing was for me was through the many years of working with kids, as well as my personal interests and skills. Through experiences in life I learnt that I can make a difference in the lives of other people. Registered nursing has always been something interesting to me. Ever since I was little I’ve always hated going to the doctors’ office because my doctor always had cold hands and the smell just made me grossed out. I think me not liking the doctors’ office is what made me want to be a nurse because as I got older I realized that doctors and nurses are just there to help you and that’s all what I want to do is help. This career is important in many ways as well because RNs’ help people when they are hurt, sick, and sometimes even when someone is dying. My dad used to be an RN’s assistant and he has talked to me about the job. He told me that the amount of children he helped over choking issues or allergies was incredible. Pediatric nursing is an important profession to us today. They devote their knowledge and skills to caring for children from infancy through the late teen years. Pediatric nursing does not just give you the opportunity to work with children, but with their families as well. I was inspired to become a pediatric nurse when I was younger. I remember when my little sister had to go to Kids First Pediatric to get a flu shot, my sister was so terrified of the needle she began to cry and try to move away from the nurse. In order for the nurse to calm my sister down she started making my sister laugh by playing peek-a-boo with her so that my sister could get her mind off of the needle. Once my sister was no longer thinking about the needle the nurse told my sister to count with her and on the count of three the nurse gave my sister the flu shot without my sister even noticing it. I found it so unique how a nurse could be playful with kids when they’re scared. I like working with kids so I know that this particular field is perfect for me.

Batson Children’s Hospital. It has been an amazing experience! My passion for the medical field and career of nursing has been magnified. I know without a doubt that nursing is what I want to do for the rest of my life. I long for the opportunity to care for my future patients and their families. I want to touch other people’s lives just as I have witnessed nurses do throughout my time volunteering. God has given me a passion for nursing. For the most part "Nurse anesthetists, nurse midwives, and nurse practitioners, also referred to as advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs), coordinate patient care and they may provide primary and specialty health care (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics,2014). Pediatric Practitioners are responsible for recording or patient medical history, performing exams, conduct research, and giving patients medical treatments because it gives me an opportunity to research specific illnesses

With my BSN from Catholic University, I was hired at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where I began my career, developing the utmost passion for being a pediatric nurse, caring for the pediatric patient population in a hospital setting. I found myself drawn to the family-centered care with evidence-based practice as a foundation for the type of nurse I would become. Empathizing with families and what they are going through in an emergency department, while trying to provide the best, most innovative care for their children, became my priority. I began to desire more, wanting to see more of the country and continue to practice as a nurse in the Pediatric Emergency Department. I decided to become a traveling nurse, packed my bags and experiences and took the initiative to see and do what I could on my own.

Creighton University Hospital was my first introduction to hospital life, and boy was it a wakeup call. I was actually starting pre-med at UNO when I obtained my nursing assistant certificate and started at Creighton. After months of seeing how hard nurse’s work and how they were really the back bones of health care, I changed my major to nursing. I wanted to be a part of something more profound than myself, to heed the call of helping the sick and injured and to provide care to those who could not help themselves. I have always thought that if I could help save just one life, or touch someone’s life in some way,

Passion has many definitions in the dictionary, most of which address emotion or strong feelings of desire. Another meaning is an intense driving or overmastering feeling or conviction.

Caring, compassionate, honest, determined and knowledgeable are just a few words to describe the type of nurse I would like to be. The American Nurses Association (ANA) defines nursing as the “protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities, and populations” (Taylor 8). Nursing has evolved from woman taking care of the sick and dying, to trained and educated men and women focused on promotion and restoration of health, prevention of illness, and facilitation of coping with disability and/or death, all thanks to Florence Nightingale and her push for nursing education (Taylor 12). Becoming a nurse has been a lifelong dream that was on hold for many years while raising my children. After spending 6 months in the hospital with my oldest daughter, I decided it was time to pursue my dreams. At this time, pediatrics is my primary choice, but I will remain open to other possibilities as I garner experience with different specialties. I know I will be able to make a difference for my patients with my caring nature, compassion and my desire to help others, as well as the skills and knowledge I will obtain at CTC.

    Two years ago, I became passionate about the medical field and becoming a nurse. There are plenty of unpleasant things to see, on the contrary, it is incredible of how many friendly relationships are made with the patients while taking care of them.

For me, passion is defined as energy that moves me to work tirelessly. Or, in other words, what you do for a living is much less important than how you do it.

Passion is defined as an intense desire or enthusiasm. Most people believe that passion is the cure to everything wrong with life.That it is the ultimate roadmap to success and is impossible lead any semblance of a meaningful life without it. However, a person can lead a meaningful life without passion through balance and putting an emphasis on economic needs before passion.

A wise man once said “Man is only great when he acts from passion.” When you hear the word passion, the first thing that might come to your mind is something related to love, and you’re not entirely wrong. According to Merriam- Webster’s dictionary, passion is defined as a strong feeling of enthusiasm or excitement for something or about doing something or a strong feeling (such as anger) that causes you to act in a dangerous way. All in all, it is a strong feeling, be it happiness, sadness, anger or liberality. You can be passionate about many things such as love, sports, food, or intimacy. However, it can also mean having a strong yearning for something.
