Introduction
I do not know who I am yet. I know the pillars of my personality, my strengths, my weaknesses, and my decision-making patterns, but when it comes to knowing exactly who I am, what I want, and where I want to be in life, I can say with confidence that I have no idea. However, it is fair to give one the benefit of the doubt when they are in their 20s, because much like early adolescence, there are a series of changes occurring that can overwhelm a person. These changes often affect a person dramatically, and how they may think and behave once they reach mature adulthood. Being a young college student, I consider myself to be in the throes of these changes. I appreciate courses like Leadership that provide me with the opportunity to mentally focus on developing myself, instead of focusing on assignments and nothing else.
My self-awareness is hindered by my lack of confidence, but is rather extensive and present in my everyday personality. I consider my everyday personality to be made of three primary traits which influence how I lead, how I view leadership, and how I make essentially every decision. These traits, or pillars, are my assertive exterior/impulsive tendencies, my empathetic way of thinking/emotional tendencies, and my analytical way of thinking/neurotic tendencies (for lack of a better term). I based the traits on my astrological birth chart, and the modes of persuasion, ethos, pathos, and logos. I developed a way to characterize myself and my loved
I remember waking up that day and that feeling in my stomach, knowing what was about to happen. Growing up I knew about my father's sickness. My family, I recall, was always supportive. No one ever thinks about how one day, everyone you’re around for years, can just vanish. I cherished my friends as I was growing up. I lived there for a majority of my life, up until fourth grade. I remember sitting at a neighbor's house and having the mother come into the room and inform me that I need to be home swiftly. As I ran home, my head was crowded with thoughts to the point where I could not even think about why I was supposed to be home quickly. That day marked the transition of what would be the biggest change in my life. As by dad became sicker,
I am the daughter of immigrant, and I myself, am an immigrant. We emigrated Africa when I was seven for various reasons, two of them being political instability and the lack of an effective education system. I am the second oldest of five siblings, meaning I am a first generation college student. With neither of my parents going beyond a high school education, they were unable to fully support my siblings or I financially or in terms of education. Because of that, they put it upon themselves to teach us the importance of education, independence and hard work from a young age. Throughout high school, I worked 2 jobs in order to support myself, and still managed to be in the top half of my class. Through hard work, I ended up getting a full ride to UNL. At the end of senior year I even ended up landing an internship with the UNL Chemistry department for a summer, which I continued working on throughout freshmen year of college.
Ask my teachers, friends, coaches, and family, they’ll all tell you that I’m mature. The way I hold myself responsible for my life, my studies, and my activities through the good and bad is a unique quality about me that they admire, but also know little to nothing about.
So far, the college experience has made me a changed person. College changed me into a better person on many occasions. I have learned to be more responsible, when it comes down to getting work done. In college you must be responsible. I have also changed my attitude. Moving from high school to college is a big step; if you don’t change your ways for the better then you might not be successful in college. When you reach college then is the time that you become an adult.
One of my assets is my self-awareness. As it is illustrated in the table above I scored a 60 out of a possible 66 in self-awareness, which indicates I have developed an ability to be a master of myself. I am very aware of the way in which others view me, and the way in which I project myself to others. I believe this is an important asset because being self-aware helps me to develop and maintain self-control. This is extremely important in my career since my company, Company, Inc., is a startup company with a fairly small number of employees. Since I am one of the first fifty employees to be hired in the company, I feel that I have a very strong understanding of the direction in which the company is going and sometimes feel that I should have a larger say in company decisions than I actually do based on my current position. In this regard my self-awareness helps me to have the self-control to be patient enough to trust my managers and leaders in the company to make the right decisions moving forward. I am able to determine when it is appropriate for me to interject and/or
Growing up in a small town, with the knowledge of a small town community can have an effect on you. Having the respect and dignity to know between right and wrong adds and interesting aspects into a life style. Growing up in a small community makes you realize what it is like to have small class rooms and having your teachers know you by a first name basis.Knowing everyone on each sport team because “everyone knows everyone in a small town”. I had the ability to be able to ride my bike down the street without a real question of my safety where I grew up in Worland Wyoming. I have different academic interests than others may, I enjoy different extracurricular activities than other students, and life experiences that are unlike anyone else that have shaped me into who I am today.
Provide a clear personal statement that describes how you have succeeded as a first generation college student or how you have succeeded in the face of disability. WC = 500 As a first generation college student, I have succeeded by navigating through the California State University system from start to finish. The conversation of college began during my junior year of high school when college readiness organizations would present on the steps of enrollment and how affordable college could be due to scholarships. My parents admitted being of no logistical value towards understanding the FAFSA, Intent to Enroll forms, Residential Life, etc., but they were supportive and reassuring as I learned how what it meant to be a Spartan.
Pursuing college has always been one of my biggest goals to achieve in life. After high school, I will higher my education by attending college. My ultimate goal will be to one day become a veterinarian. The love and compassion I have for animals plays a big role in choosing this course of study. Growing up on a ranch, I am exposed to animals such as horses, cows, dogs, chickens, and rabbits. Tending to the animals and keeping them in good health gives me the experience I need to see if the veterinarian study is fitting for myself. Furthermore, I plan to attend BYU-Idaho which offers a pre vet course that gives students who are seeking to become veterinarians the opportunity to intern at a vet
I have always been a fun and happy person. I loved to dance, go shopping, hang out with friends, watch movies with my family and go on vacations. Many people go through adversity that change them in significant ways and I was one of them. My way of getting through my issues was going to activities such as dance, cheerleading, and wrestling and it seemed to be working until one day at wrestling practice where I hurt my foot and had to go to the nurse. At the nurses office I had to take a survey that asked if I had ever been sexually assaulted, I answered truthfully and circled “yes.” I figured they would ask me about it however I didn’t expect them to call my mom and social services. I cried
Everyone has something that drives them to succeed every day. Some people feel a need to compete with others around them while others feel they need to make their families proud. For me there are two major factors that encourages me to try my best. One is to show my parents that everything they have done for me has not been a waste and the other is my curiosity.
College is a great opportunity that I am blessed to be going through today. I see it as an opportunity to grow as a person and set myself up for the future I want. The success I have in the future will be greatly affected by how I do in college.
For many, after graduating high school the next big step is college. I never asked myself why or if I even wanted to. Yet, since I was not yet ready to join the work force, and didn’t want to disappoint my parents, I simply followed the path that I was supposed to take. For a while I had no direction, but through the loss of my high school English teacher and my dream of making my family proud, I discovered that college was the place I wanted and needed to be.
After the initial stumbling block more commonly known as residential life, I faced the towering challenge of settling into classes. Once I had registered (which was itself something of a dilemma), I had in my hand a sheet of abbreviations that rivaled a military briefing or a computer manual. My first class, on a Thursday morning, was located in a building called CBW, which stood for Classroom Building West. Surely the
What has my journey to graduation been like for me? My journey has been a crazy, fun-filled learning adventure. I met many goals and accomplishments I set for myself but I also faced some challenges on the way. For example, I finally met my goal of graduating with a 4.6 GPA and maintaining it. Also, I accomplished completing my last four years of grade school and now I am on the way to college. My last year has been interesting and there are many goals, accomplishments and challenges I can reflect on.
College is a competitive environment; in order to succeed in it a student needs certain skills. Those skills can only be learned. A college professor mentioned that there five basic rules that need to be followed in order to become a good student: study, do all the homework and the assigned reading, attend class, and, most importantly, develop self-discipline and time management 1. In the following lines, a detailed analysis of those different steps will be done. So, let’s get started.
