To google, education is defined as “the act or process of imparting or acquiring general knowledge, developing the powers of reasoning and judgment, and generally of preparing oneself or others intellectually for mature life.” To a teacher it is defined as giving a child the confidence to make the most of themselves in life. The principles behind this plan defers between educators, but most have the same goal in mind; to make a difference in the education system for newer generations of students. Becoming a teacher seemed to be the perfect way for me to help the youth of society whilst challenging my love for learning. Dolmage proved the intentions I thought were negative about becoming a teacher may be positive. “The most effective teachers are those who never stop being students themselves.” (Dolmage, 11) I understand the intentions of the reading, and am motivated to help improve the education system in small steps and through learning the different parts of the education system. The reading gave me the understanding of why every student may not want to learn a certain subject, and not every student can be saved; but the difference between teaching and learning lies in the method it is taught. Any person can teach, not every person can give someone the will to learn.
The education system now has many flaws, but the advancements and new prospects change the overall outlook every day. During the first system of schools, the basis of education was memory. Students were not taught to learn, but taught to recite information. Society told people, you need school to get an education, when that it is far from the truth. What is education? Two words probably jump out at most people: learning and school. Yet, how much students are actually learning must be analyzed because passing through is not the same thing as experiencing. In the same case learning is the same thing as receiving information and moving on. Even so, schools are blindly addressing the two as the same thing because secondary institutions have compressed education into numbers that signify intelligence. However, when education and school become two entities, children are not able to reach their full potential which then leads to them being unhappy in life as an adult.
Education is one of the most important parts of growing up and profoundly affects the lives of all children. My philosophy of education is that every child should receive high quality education that is inclusive, relevant and meaningful to their life. I am a firm believer of making pedagogy relatable to my students. My vision is driven by my personal experiences with the American school system. I was what is thought of as “A child at risk”. This is what education is seen as and is conformed to be through the banking concept towards education. Nothing else is expected from it but it is expected to be the key to success in the real world. The educational system is flawed, it tells educators how to and what to teach and turns students into robots. Therefore, striping kids of the opportunity to comprehend what they are told to memorize and not just regurgitate the information back.
Have you ever had a teacher you really enjoyed? Why did you enjoy him? For most people it is because the teacher interacted with the student and made them feel involved in the learning process. As Carl Jung puts it: “One looks back with appreciation to the brilliant teachers, but with gratitude to those who touched our human feelings. The curriculum is so much necessary raw material, but warmth is the vital element for the growing plant and for the soul of the child.” (para. 249).
Educating children profoundly affects their lives and influences the life of anyone who may come in contact with them. Education is the foundation for a child to base the rest of his or her life on. When a child has become well educated he or she can make decisions that will benefit their interest as well as society as a whole. An educator is someone who cares and wants to see children be successful in class, and in the future. I feel that successful teaching is made of components that build on each other like, love, discipline, understanding and encouragement, and patience and persistence. I love children and I love participating in the process of learning with them. I have come to appreciate learning even more today. I hope to someday be able to give back to our future students what was given to me. I hope to be remembered as the one who helped and made a difference in a child’s life. I have to say as I enter into the profession of teaching my philosophy will grow stronger as I gain experience in the classroom. I truly believe the key to a happy and successful life is having a choice to do what you really want.
Being an educator, in my opinion, is the most important job in the world, because every decision matters. Through my experiences in the classroom, I have developed a teaching philosophy that will be implemented into my future classrooms. I truly believe that being a student and a teacher go hand in hand. I am continually striving to learn new things, to become a better educator. My main goal is to be a teacher that motivates and inspires my students.
Education is the imparting and acquiring of knowledge and skills through teaching and learning. As an educator, my personal mission statement is to master my subject area in order to serve as a role model for my students thereby producing students who thoroughly understand the subject matter, and who develop holistically. In order to achieve this goal I must have a set education philosophy with a strong Christian worldview. I must also have a general understanding of the different world and education philosophies.
Education, according Merriam-Webster’s dictionary, means the knowledge, skill and understanding that you get from attending a school, college, or university. Furthermore, Education in its simplest, teaches us to become more productive citizens while simultaneously opening magical doors for aspiring pupils to explore. As the late Martin Luther King aptly put it, “Intelligence plus character- that is the goal of true education.” The key to having the best education system is constantly moving forward with legislation and initiatives. Subsequently, state legislatures and school districts pass initiative plans in hopes of promoting the progression of a child’s education. However, the complexity and inefficiency of the total U.S. system can lead to bright children being left behind.
My philosophy is that teaching is building lifelong habits so students have the skills, knowledge, and motivation to be successful learners. My role as a teacher is to engage students’ interest in learning, to create a supportive learning environment, and to provide resources for all students in my classroom. My relationship with students is one of encouragement, structure and patience. I encourage all students to be actively involved in their learning and I use a variety of methods to encourage discussion and interaction. Some methods I frequently use in my teaching are questioning techniques, gradual release of responsibility (I do, we do, you do), educational protocols like pair-share, and incorporating the use of technology with students. In creating lesson plans, I consider students’ developmental needs and learning styles.

According to Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy (2008, pp. 1) “all human societies, past and present, have had a vested interest in education; and some wits have claimed that teaching is the second oldest profession.” No one comes into the world with knowledge, all knowledge is learned. Education can be learned from experience to being taught. This explains why educators are considered a big contribution to many successful people in today's society. Without education, the world would not have access to being literate.
Teaching, or empowering young minds is a task that cannot be taken lightly. It is full of challenges, frustrations, and responsibilities. However, it is a task that is also full of adventure, wonder, and gratification. I strongly believe that all children are capable of learning, if they have the proper motivation and direction from their teachers. All students deserve my time and full attention in regards to their education. One must create a classroom that is a safe learning environment for all. If students do not feel safe in my classroom, whether it is emotionally, physically, or socially, their defense systems will go up and learning will greatly decrease, if not shut down all together. It is important to me that my students, as well as their parents, other teachers, administrators, and people in the community, see me as someone they can approach, who will be fair and nondiscriminatory
When I think about what I want my classroom to look like, I want it to look like the kids are enjoying being there and are learning something. I think it is very important for the kids to learn while also enjoying going to school. What I want my classroom to be like is, the kids will learn about the rules and the way I want my classroom to be ran and while learning the rules I will make it fun, I don’t want the kids to not want to come back to my classroom because I’m so strict. I don’t want kids who are perfect at math or language I want kids who are willing to learn and help the learn from their mistakes while learning about the math and language topics, I want to help them prepare for the world and tell them that It will be okay in the end. And help them understand their learning skills.
