I volunteered at the nursing department at Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego. This experience provided me with the opportunity to interact with different health professionals and get a meaningful exposure to medical practice. I interacted with patients of various ages, ethnicities, and backgrounds and listened to their problems and concerns. I learned that healthcare is contingent upon the collaborative efforts of many people from different specialties. The roles played by every individual were imperative to maintaining the functions of the hospital and providing best possible treatment to patients.
Volunteering in such a rich environment enhanced my cultural awareness and left me with a plethora of unique stories and experiences to draw
During my volunteer hours I learned a lot about my own community I that I have not been able to experience. For example I have never been able to participate in so many writing programs and workshops in my local high school, this is because I also did not attend my own local high school because my mother did not allow me to instead, she asked me to attend a charter school. By partnering with LA826, I was able to attend different writing workshops where I would help different high school student write essay, cover letters, and personal statements. Furthermore I believed that most of my activities consisted of just being able to listen to some of the students.
Wide reaching, nurses significantly outnumbered physicians as providers of health care often having utmost vast reach remoteness to underserved communities. Having personally lived in one of the underserved communities in my hometown Western Africa before moving to the United States of America and my life calling to be a nurse from a young age with the deep desire to make a difference. I plan to contribute and continue to contribute immensely to the underserved communities by delivering quality health care to remote regions around the world. I do volunteer service at several clinics in the Atlanta area with many well-known Emory physicians that care for homeless and underserved populations, these volunteer experiences provide me with opportunities and fulfillment to develop added headship skill and experience to meet my daily patients, needs.
As a recent graduate of the Johns Hopkins University and a new Research Technician at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, becoming more familiar with different healthcare settings and helping others in doing so have always been of my interest. From my experience of volunteering as a piano teacher for inner-city children in Baltimore, I have learnt that even a small commitment and emotional support can make a big difference in the daily lives and the happiness of those in need. I have briefly familiarized myself to the hospital environment by shadowing physicians and conducting biomedical research but have yet to translate my volunteering experiences and the lessons learnt from them to the healthcare setting. I am a friendly, optimistic,
1. The two most important things I learned from my volunteering experience are that all kids need attention and positive support. Whether they effectively seek it out or not and that kids comprehend significantly more about what is going on than they can express in words and therefore the environment provided at child care centers can have a big impact on the child’s early development. While working with the kids I thought that it was anything but difficult to pay attention to the cutest kids who were continually smiling and needing my attention. The children who were the trouble makers, and the initial few times I volunteered, these were the children who got the majority of my time. For the shyer, less vocal kids I discovered I needed to try to collaborate with them and once they got more comfortable around me, they were more likely to need me to lift them up when they got hurt or scared or play with them. Through this experience I understood that the greater part of the kids required a lots of attention, even the ones who did not want it at consistently. I understood the significance of making each kid feel vital and cared for by adults. I discovered that the kids could see a great deal more about what was going ahead around them then I foresee. They knew a wide assortment of commands and phrases and could make wide associations between past encounters and their present surroundings. One funny example of this happened when I was reading a
Does volunteering have a decisive influence on discovering me? When I registered the house-repairing activity at the Kochang, South Korea, rather taking a vacation on someplace different, I called it a win-win circumstance based on experiencing various skills on manual labor while meeting the call of others. However, far from the trite reaction of feeling great because I am serving others, I perceive not just contributing to our community is vital in itself, but assisting others more serves me to learn and intensify further about my character; to come to be a PA, withholding a sheer willingness to devote my knowledge to others is imperative. Moreover, Because of my past as being part of the marginalized population, I learned the brutal life
After deciding to pursue my dreams of being a nurse practitioner, I volunteered at Glide Health Services, a UCSF-affiliated nurse ran the clinic. The opportunity opened my eyes to the high-risk population of San Francisco. I grew into my role as an assistant to the triage nurse. The high volume face paced clinic taught me to think critically in an efficient yet safe manner and refined my ability to interview challenging patients. More importantly, the role taught me the importance of trust in a provider-patient relationship.
The cultural experience that I decided to participate in was volunteering at a nursing home. Hospice centers focus on the care of chronically or terminally ill patients. Volunteering at such a center would require training and certification and a clean bill of health. Nursing homes require similar training for some forms of volunteer service, however there are other options available that still allow direct interaction with residents. I chose to volunteer at the LakePoint Nursing and Rehabilitation Center that is located in my hometown. My goal was to directly engage with the residents there so that I could better understand their experiences and overcome my feelings of discomfort.
Weeping sounds from babies are the first thing I heard when I stepped foot into my volunteering site. The weeping sounded as if the babies were hopeless, lonely, and in pain. Everybody around seemed so busy or just didn’t want be bother with a crying baby. I couldn’t just stand there and let the baby cry. I had to do something. But what?
At this clinic, I was able to intern for six months as a researcher at a project assessing health outcomes in low-income diabetics who receive nutrition classes and healthy food. I also volunteered at the Oncology department of a Hospital for 8 months. I was an intern for two different public health studies in San Diego, CA related to physical activity and weight loss. These volunteer and internship experiences have contributed for me to learn more about the community’s needs and to reassure my interest in public health. These opportunities have not only given me experience that I now use in my work as a research assistant at a public health study and that I will continue to use professional and personal lives. From learning to listen more effectively, to demonstrating awareness of others’ needs and feelings. I have learned about compassion and socio-cultural factors that have allowed me to have a greater perspective, appreciation and respect for multiple dimensions of diversity. These opportunities have allowed me to met people from different backgrounds, life experiences and needs which helped me about my responsibilities to society locally, nationally, and
I've had several volunteer positions that have taught me a number of skills and exposed me to a variety of new experiences. Throughout high school, I volunteered at the hospital near my house, and while I was there, I held various positions. My first position was as the radiologist's assistant. As her assistant, I did secretarial assignments, like filing papers and escorting patients to the correct locations. My other position at the hospital was working the front desk. There, I delivered newspapers and coffee throughout the hospital, answered the phone, and escorted patients to various locations. Working at my local hospital, I not only learned how a hospital runs on the inside, but I also learned how to communicate more effectively with people that I just met and try and make them feel
Volunteering in the medical/surgical department at PWFMC has been both insightful and rewarding. While volunteering, I interacted with patients of varying ages, ethnicities, disabilities, and the like. Most of my patient interaction involved helping patients in any way possible, which meant, more often than not, simply
Pennsylvania, discussed different aspects of the volunteer program with an emphasis on the hospice volunteer program in particular. In the meeting on Wednesday, March 16th, 2016, Kaitlyn was asked a number of questions about the volunteer program and how it has been successful in meeting the needs of the aging community at Chandler Hall.
-I would like to try something I have never done before. I think to become a volunteer in SDC would be a very valuable experience.
I volunteer at the hospital weekly and have witnessed the intrinsic rewards of being a nurse and the admirable traits they possess. Real life experiences with patients broadened my desire to pursue a career in nursing and that it is in my nature to assist others in needs, both emotionally and physically. I interacted with the patients in the nursing facility and asset the nurses by answering call lights, room visits and delivering meals to patients. The connections I build with patients during their stay reminds me how much nursing means as I also recalled a past memory of my mother. Volunteering at the hospital continues to remind me to be the one to provide the quality care through my dedication, compassion, and sensitivity towards the wellbeing
One particular outstanding achievement I have received is the recognition of my volunteer work at my local Vietnamese church. Starting in fourth grade, I would volunteer weekly at my church, usually playing for 1-3 hours (this included weddings and funerals). I affected the lives of those I played the piano for since I put out time to practice and attend extra masses on my own time. I soon felt a connection to the people I helped, and I very am thankful that my love of music has helped
