J. Allen Varasdi, a writer who obtained a master’s degree in sociology and psychology from Wayne State after his service in Vietnam, has written several books about the misconceptions and fallacies that were there in history for a long period. This book is best known as a result of the unlimited assumptions and the violation of truth from the people. Myth Information was his first book which explained the absurdity between belief and fact. In this book, he has collected more than 550 of common fallacies which would be defined as the acceptance of a premise as reality. As he stated in the introduction, these misconceptions are not serious that would hurt the generation. However, these common disbeliefs would surprise and enlighten the adult
In the article, “Hooked on a Myth” by Victoria Braithwaite, Braithwaite wrote about how fishes have the ability to feel pain. Until reading this article, I was not made aware of the idea that fishes can be smart nor that they can respond emotionally to a stimulus. In the article, Braithwaite thoroughly explained the reasons on why we should respect fishes by giving compelling evidence. Braithwaite argued that fishes feel emotions due to a part of their brain that functions similarly to our amygdala and hippocampus. This proves that fishes have the capability of feeling different type of emotions. She also claimed that fishes are smart since they have the cognitive ability to learn different and unique type of skills that can help them survive. And Lastly, Braithwaite argued that fishes can feel pain due to their nociceptors that allow them to detect pain.
A fallacy is defined as a kind of error in reasoning. They can be persuasive and be created both unintentionally and intentionally in order to deceive others from the truth. Fallacies often indicate a false belief or cause of a false belief (dowden, 2006). An argument or situation commits a fallacy when the reasons offered do not support the conclusion. This defeats the purpose of the argument since its point is to give reason to support the conclusion. Fallacies affect the outcome of our everyday decision making process. There are three types of logical fallacies discussed in this paper along with the importance of utilizing critical thinking skills.
Every culture, religion, and beliefs have their own ideology on how the earth was created and the story of how the first person was formed. Many beliefs come from science and religion however there is also myths that have been passed down from generation to generation. So, who is right? How did the earth form? I believe that there is no right answer and that every myth gives a person something to believe in. If you take an in depth look at these myths, you will become mesmerized at some of the stories. Today we are going to dive into two myths from two different cultures.
“The Last of the Mythologists” by Kristen Froberg is an article based on novelist or more prefered a mythologist, Charles Dickens publishing a book around Christmas called “The Sledgehammer” which was later well-known as the “A Christmas Carol”. In the seventeenth century, hearing about children at young ages working in copper mines and factories to provide for their family’s gave Dickens the idea to visit these workplaces but also gave him inspiration to create this book on behalf of a poor person’s child and his own personal experience as a child. CHristmas Carol was one of Dickens's work that he decided to perform in front of audiences. In 1867 and 1868 Christmas Carol was very successful after Charles had a tour profiting about $140,000
As I mentioned above, everything began with Christopher Columbus discovering America in 1492. History is non-fiction, and perhaps the most concrete example of this non-fiction is the story of the beginning of the Indians. Native American mythology contains may different types of character including heroes, tricksters, and more. These characters can have both good and bad qualities, and fall into many categories. For example, creator gods usually restore order, but in some stories can be destructive. Tricksters can even be considered the hero in some stories. (Myths Encyclopedia, 2007). Indian stories are born from experiences and beliefs. Ross also states that “Native American societies are based on the concept of interdependence. Interdependence
Most of the historical events that are taught today are merely fabrications of what really happened many years ago. These fabrications soon turn into myths because they are continually passed on incorrectly, but yet people still believe them to be true. Founding Myths: Stories that Hide Our Patriotic Past is filled with many historical happenings that people believe are true, and the actuality of what really happened as well. Ray Raphael, the author of the book, believes "there are three main reasons [why we cling to these myths], thoroughly intertwined: they give us a collective identity, they make good stories, and we think they are patriotic"5). The fact that
In James Loewen’s book, Lies My Teacher Told Me, he talks about misconceptions in America school textbooks. Are these actually misconceptions though? What is the author saying about American history when details or whole event are untold? Lowen delves into these deep topics head on and gives examples as he goes. This book is not only intended for those who have read an American history book, but for those who have never heard the truth. Lowen wrote this book in order to uncover and educate; furthermore, this is important because events never told are now brought to light. Using detailed information concerning racism, governmental over watch, and the Vietnam War the author argues that the American history textbook has covered up things in
In Matoaca Middle School we are expected to be the best people we can be to achieve success in all of our goals, in and out of school. We are encouraged to do this and influenced by things we see inside and outside of school. We can also be influenced by the literature we read. There are many times we can use TRIBE Expectations to analyze the book Crash. I have decided to analyze the many scenarios in Crash where Penn showed an incredible amount of use of the TRIBE Expectations
In chapter two, it discusses the Bible and myth and Oswalt begins discussing the numerous competing definitions and understandings of “myth” that have been offered in recent years. The basic problem of myth is the problem of definition. However, Oswalt specifically addresses whether the Bible should be viewed as myth. Oswalt then offers his own definition. As with Oswalt’s definition of myth, he emphasizes that "Myth can be considered as a form of expression whereby the continuities among various realms, such as the human, the natural, and the divine, are expressed and actualized." (Oswalt, 2009). In this chapter, Oswalt also does a good job of telling us the many approaches to describing what a myth is and he presents two approaches of the
I believe the purpose of this article is to make more people aware of the misrepresentation of other
I have now entered the last week of the conclusion of my reading goal of Legend. During this week I have read the last pages, which are 260-305. Day has now started to dream about when he was younger. He dreamed about the time he and his and brother were playing street hockey with a paper ball and he accidentally threw a ball and hit a police officer in the face. The officer then beat Day really bad and didn’t stop until Day’s mom and John offered him their family’s savings, as well as taking the chicken that Day’s mom was preparing for dinner. John then scolded Day for looking at the officer defiantly, as he explained that this is why the police officer acted the way that he did. As time has passed Thomas invited June to a move, and June
There is a logical saying in society one should take to heart; that line being, “Don’t believe everything you read.” Just because a text is written and published does not means it is always accurate. Historical facts, similar to words whispered in the child’s game, “telephone,” are easily transformed into different facts, either adding or subtracting certain details from the story. James Loewen, in The Lies My Teacher Told Me, reveals how much history has been changed by textbook writes so that students studying the textbooks can understand and connect to the information. In Howard Zinn’s, People’s History of the United States, the author recounts historical tales through the point of view of the common people. Mainstream media, as
The use of logical fallacies is directly connected to the “Idol of the Cave,” where the individual believe in false notion based off their background and relationships amongst one another. Indirectly stating how individuals’ personal understanding was influenced by others and criticizing, exemplifies how he had the ability to agree with the ideal of the “Idols of the Cave” through this understanding of how influential of
There once was a god named Perculus, he was one of the three lost gods that were destroyed by Zeus. He was the god of education; he was responsible for teaching all the citizens of Greece the basic ways of living. Once Zeus got into power he was jealous that someone other than himself was teaching the citizens so he sent him to Hades, along with two other gods for other personal reasons, Diminutive the original god of Truth and, Gargantuan the god of punishment.
Ho there, friends. Today I have been tasked with typing up an informative report. Truthfully, I would much rather if they had given me some options, but the activity says "choose something that interests you.". Can do. So this report's topic will be on Norse Mythology. I can hear everyone sighing from here. Specifically we will be looking at the creation of the known world. Come with me on this journey into the land of the Gods, friends, and bring axes.
