There are many assessment processes that are used to identify substance abuse as well as many other disorders that are addictive. These processes include the SBIRT, AUDIT (Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test), NIDAMED, CAGE AID (which is used frequently within the counseling foundation), AUDIT-C, and also the DAST-10 which is an assessment process used to evaluate drug abuse within the patients. These are many different processes that are currently used to identify these addictions in clients. The activity of identifying these processes can be over a period of time or can be evaluated in that same day or after the evaluation is completed.

Narcotics Anonymous is a support group program that assist in helping individuals, men and women, into recovering from drug related issues that affect a person mentally, physically, and emotionally. This type of program helps individuals who are drug addicts to stop their use, urge, and to overcome their drug addition issues. Narcotic Anonymous is a twelve-step group that allows narcotic users to meet with others who have the same problem. It is a group that allows an individual to have support from another individual who has been or is going through the same thing. The objective of these meetings is to help individuals become and remain clean (na.org). I was able to observe one of these meetings. The meeting I attended was at The Meeting House, which was in Point Pleasant at St. Paul’s Church. The meeting commenced at 7:30 p.m. and completed at 8:30 p.m. The physical environment was in a nice place, but I thought it was weird to have it across from Fruth’s, Rite-Aid, and a doctor’s office behind it. The social problem I chose to do something about is opiate abuse/addiction. Opiates are naturally occurring narcotics, such as opium and opium derivatives, including morphine, codeine, and heroin. Prescription painkillers are opioid analgesics. Opiates are highly addictive and dangerous when misused. This social problem matters to me because I am a recovering opiate addict. I have been clean for four months and my new found passion is educating people about the dangers of opiates. People assume because doctors prescribe opioid analgesics, they must be safe.
