Fitting Into Contemporary Culture Societies all around the world have cast discrimination or at least implied it for ages. In modern society however, it is even more common to be an individual and feel some sort of discrimination. While basic segregation has been outlawed for decades now, judgment and discrimination is still all around. Personally, I have advantages in modern day society, as well as some disadvantages. My race is Caucasian, or white. Since the seventeenth century, being white in America has been considered the “majority”, and up until the mid to late nineteenth century, it was about the only thing that was socially acceptable. I am a combination of German, Irish, Dutch, Swiss, British, Luxembourgian, and my family believes there is Native American in our blood as well. It is very common for people to ask what ethnicity I am based on my dark skin color and they do not believe me when I say I am not Mexican or Italian. I always list off my main two, German and Irish, and it is not until I tell people that I believe there is trace of Native American as well that they believe me. Other than instances like this, my ethnicity has not affected my life much. Thankfully, I was born into a family that has always been able to support me and I have not known much financial struggle, or at least my parents never let anything like that ever show. I only faintly remember when we lived with my grandfather while my mother was still in college, and that was when I was three years old . While there are big cities, rural areas, and the average suburban lifestyle in between the two, there still seems like there are so many more things to do every time I travel to places along the coast or even down south. There are more attractions, and certainly nicer weather. I love visiting Florida because of the nice beaches and unlimited options of things to do. The people seem to be nicer and the food seems a little bit better too down south (except pizza, Chicago will always win in that essence). One place I have always wanted to visit is Louisiana because of my love for Cajun food, but I have not made the trip yet because my family has never had the same desire and it still is not in my budget to take the long haul on my own. There is one restaurant in Illinois called Ron's Cajun Connection and it is absolutely delicious because all of the food is fresh and comes from the New Orleans area so I can only imagine what the food would be like down there. Illinois is a bland state for my kind of lifestyle. I like rural areas but I like the environment more down
