Some historical figures argue that a people stripped of its native culture is a people stripped of its soul and identity. How might people be stripped of their culture? Imperialism and colonization are the main argued ways a people are ripped from their culture. This is partly true. If a people were stripped completely of their culture, then they would lose the soul and identity of their people, but successful imperialism and colonization does not mean that the culture will automatically go away. One can see this in Chinua Achebe's book “Things Fall Apart,” through the history of dream catchers, the colonization of Hawaii, and after British control in India.
Chinua Achebe’s book “Things Fall Apart” is about a man named Okonkwo and the new

The Native American culture was completely erased and overshadowed by the European faith and culture, or was it? Native American culture is still around today even if it is a remnant of what it was. What possibly could be an example of Native American culture surviving? The answer is simple, Dream Catchers. The imperialism of the English and the Natives was a complete take over, yet the history and continuation of dream catchers is still around today. The Native Americans said that a spirit talked to an elder of a village and gave the idea of dream catchers to him. The spirit said to the elder, “The web is a perfect circle with a hole in the center. Use the web to help your people reach their goals, making good use of their ideas, dreams and visions. If you believe in the great spirit, the web will filter your good ideas and the bad ones will be trapped and will not pass.” then the narrator telling the story would say, “ The elder passed on his vision onto the people and now many Indian people have a dreamcatcher above their bed to sift their dreams and visions. The good will pass through the center hole to the sleeping person. The evil in their dreams are captured in the web, where they perish in the light of the morning sun. It is said the dreamcatcher holds the destiny of the future”("History of Dream Catchers”). Even something as simple as a dream catcher holds a piece …show more content…
Great Britain colonized a lot of land, but a great example can be found in their conquest of India. India was a great place for Britain to take over because of the of the great resources that it had to offer. If you look closely, or give a general glance, at India, you can tell that British culture hardly influenced the one they already had. A main difference you can see is the clothing that Indians wear. “Indian clothing is closely identified with the colorful silk saris worn by many of the country’s women. The traditional clothing for men is the dhoti, an unstitched piece of cloth that is tied around the waist and legs. Men also wear a kurta, a loose shirt that is worn about knee-length”("Indian Culture: Traditions and Customs of India”). In Britain they don’t wear the same clothes as described. In the same passage it said that, “India’s culture is among the world's oldest; civilization in India began about 4,500 years ago. Many sources describe it as "Sa Prathama Sanskrati Vishvavara" — the first and the supreme culture in the world..”("Indian Culture: Traditions and Customs of India”). To be one of the oldest cultures it still has to be around. You can’t have the oldest culture in the world if it disappeared with the European imperialization. India’s culture is still around and is not going anywhere
Dreams have long fascinated the human race. This alternate reality, separate from the conscious world we see around us, has captured the interest of many people throughout history. In fact, mankind has been studying dreams since the invention of the written word. Perhaps the lure of dreams is that there seems to be some significance behind them. Most reject the idea that dreams are just random meaningless fragments of data. The vivid sensations that dreams create are just too powerful to ignore. The world of dreams is filled with peculiar phenomenon and unexpected events that beg our attention. Consider the following example of a dream:
America, land of the free, home of the brave, unless you’re not white. The United States of America was built on immigrants, but the more proper term would be imperialists. It is widely known that Native Americans were here first, but they barely acknowledge it. Instead children are taught about Christopher Columbus, the pilgrims, and the founding fathers. Colonists felt the need to kill, annex, and annihilate an entire culture to capitalize off of “undiscovered” lands. As a result, Native American culture is almost extinct, the impact that colonists had on Native Americans were catastrophic; natives were forced to change their way of life and culture to adjust to new conquerors brought by Columbus, when westerners kept pushing west, battles and massacres ensued and Natives were forced to assimilate into American culture. Native Americans are still ignored and are pushed to the back burner. We claim that we are progressive, but the Dakota Pipeline Project seems to contradict that statement. Today, we still aren’t progressing and it shows when we still have a holiday celebrating Christopher Columbus “discovering” the new world.
THESIS STATEMENT: The Native Americans were historically doomed because of the Europeans inability to accept elements of Native American culture that they felt were savage, the natives inability to acknowledge the Europeans threat to their lifestyle and land, and the far superior European army used to defeat Indian tribes.
“A dream is a wish your heart makes, when you are fast asleep.” This nostalgic melody sung by Disney’s Cinderella expresses the importance and meanings that dreams can have. In Native American culture, dreams are used as tools to guide one through life. Many big decisions made by Native Americans are influenced by dreams. It is said that supernatural powers or omens from spirits or gods are to be received via dreams or visions. In receiving them, magical abilities, or the ability to look into the future can be bestowed onto one. In Fools Crow, James Welch, illustrates several characters having visions and dreams. Throughout the book the dreams are seen as visions of the future. Welch uses these messages to reflect upon Native American culture and to foreshadow motives or events that will affect the characters later in the book.
Any level of intrusion and unwanted exposure to another person’s culture will inevitably have a detrimental effect on your own. The Native American Indian people’s forced appropriation of western European culture has had such a negative effect on their culture that many tribes were entirely decimated. The American Indian people’s culture and society was built almost entirely around their connection to the land, which was taken away from them.
Native American resistance against European assimilation dates back to the colonial period. Governmental pressures for adaptation and eradication of customs, communities, and identities through various federal policies gave Native Americans a valid reason to fight and preserve their culture. During the 1880’s, the United States government managed to confine Native Americans on poverty-stricken reservations with limited resources and supplies (Young, 1990). Although these conditions caused reservations nationwide to suffer, it produced a necessity for movements to end injustice and abuse. Tribal leaders attempted to reassert their independence and create new spiritual
India was colonized by the British because of the abundance of natural resources including natural gas, coal, gold, diamonds, and copper. Britain wasn't the only country running for the mines; Germany established the German East Africa Company. They established gold mines and used advanced machinery along with hard labor to invest their resources in the mining industry (Doc 8). In the eyes of Germany, the market of home made goods has decreased in the rise of imperialism and each country has a market waiting to be established (Doc 5). By investing in a new market in one country, one country may expand the market through the imperialism of other territories and gain control over that industry. Britain had the advantage over other European countries colonizing countries in Africa because they spread out their territory over the entire continent, enabling Britain to control multiple industries. The control of multiple industries sparked a rapid increase in capital which also increased Britains power. This power came from money to invest in a strong military, broad trade relations, and new
We all go through the “dream stage”, but is it so that they are even meant to come across our minds during our slumber? Dreams are simply desires that certain people have a big hope to one day to actually experience their destinies and thoughts. Although reveries are recurrent, Langston Hughes and Zora Neale Hurston vividly contrasts the type of dreams people have and how they accomplish them. The determination in the 1920s set off success in the African American culture leading people to look past the limit and keep going. In “Freedom’s Plow” , Hughes believes dreams are set and fulfilled through unity, but on the other side of the grass Zora Neale Hurston in her piece, “Their Eyes Were Watching God”, she perceives that dreams are asymmetrical and are not
The cultural and social reform the American Indians faced resulted in devastating effects that have continued for generations. This included forced separation from homelands, loss of native languages, and histories of injustice. The loss of the native land included sacred sites. The sacred territories were special to Native Americans when they were first taken, and the sites are still special to the Native Americans today. A historical consequence was having their Native language taken away from them. The Indians way of
The Spanish war gave the United States an empire. At the end of the Spanish war the United States took Spanish colonies such as Puerto Rico, the Philippines, and many other islands. The creation of the American Empire leads to the end of the Spanish Empire. The United States wanted to build up the countries so that markets would open up and purchase American goods and to improve the American economy.
Everyone in the world has had at least one dream in their lifetime. Most people do not think much about the dreams that they have, unless they are recurring. Dreaming is “a series of images, ideas, emotions, and sensations occurring involuntarily in the mind during REM sleep.” Most people today wake up from a dream or nightmare saying, “thank god that was a dream,” or “too bad that was just a dream.” Many times these dreams or nightmares have more meaning than we may think. If people took more time to consider the meaning behind the dreams they have, then dream interpretation could be used as a means to help resolve issues in our awaken lives, including helping to
Although Native American culture has been partially ruined, there are still people that are trying to resurrect that culture by reliving past traditions. An example is a man who has released numerous amounts of buffalo into an Oklahoman reservation.

Out of almost all of the other cultures, Native Americans are the most exploited. Not only was their culture subverted and their people forced to move, but also the Native Americans still today are trying to regain their cultural identity. It was only during the late 20's that the effects of this cultural genocide became apparent. With the Meriam Report, published in 1928, the inhumane treatment of Native Americans was brought to the public eye, and this made way for the establishment of progressive day schools where Native Americans could integrate their culture. Ever since, Native Americans have struggled to regain an identity of their culture.
Native Americans are one of the fastest growing minority groups in the U.S. There is a myth that Native Americans are disappearing as a people; this is not true. Native Americans are a resilient people and hold strongly to their heritage. It is true that a great deal of Native American cultures, even entire tribes, have been lost. However, despite the hardships and oppression they have suffered they have remained as a people.
