Are nefarious people born the way they are or do they learn their ‘corrupt’ behaviors? This is the biggest conflict in psychology, the battle between nature and nurture and which factor has the most significant impact on human behavior; nonetheless, nurture has the largest impact on human behavior. “Nature is the predisposition one is born with while nurture includes how one is shaped by his or her family, friends, and the environment.” (Guo). Some scientists believe nature has the biggest impact, but nurture has the largest impact on behaviors because of influences such as friends and peers, family incomes, household environments, and overall environment. People get most of their behaviors from their experiences with other persons from …show more content…
For example, the health of children growing up affects the child’s behavior. A scientific study shows that children from wealthier families tend to eat healthier. “When children are introduced to something nutritious, they tend to reject it—which many parents don’t have room for in their budgets.” (Pinsker). Not being able to afford these food losses parents often chose to have unhealthier food options they know their children are most likely to eat. These food choices can cause many health problems increasing chances for obesity, depression, aggression, and a lower quality of life. Which then starts a chain reaction changing the behaviors. Family incomes affect …show more content…
For example, two people have the same set of genes, but one lived in a country that is in a violent war while the other grew up in America, would they grow up to be the same person? There is a scientific study examining the behaviors of identical twins to see whether nature or nurture has the largest impact on human behavior. “Identical twins develop from a single fertilized egg, and they have the same genome. This means that any differences between the twins are due to their environment, not their genetics” (Dovey). All of the differences between the twins in the study validates nurture’s impact on human behavior. This study proves that no two people are the same even when they have the same genetics. The overall environment influences human
Many psychologists agree that nurture play a greater part in the development of a human being. Studies such as those performed on monozygotic twins (identical), who share the same genetics and those performed
What makes one individual different from the other? Many have attempted to answer this question- from ancient philosophers and theologists to modern day scientists. Regardless of whether the individual concerned is a cell or a whole organism, the answer is said to lie in the nature vs. nurture debate. Thus arose another, related question- How do individuals with extremely similar blueprints develop an astounding amount of differences? Biological research attempting to settle the debate for once and for all has found that differences amongst a cohort of individuals is established by an interplay of both- genetics (nature) and various environmental influences (nurture).
These researchers have concluded that there is a strong correlation between the environment and the social behaviors and mental behaviors of a human being in the future. The most critical of these time periods are the childhood of the child and the social groups that the person has been emerged around in the adolescent ages. One of the most widely used studies is the Twin Study where two twins with a very similar genetic makeup are raised in different environments to see how much change there is in their behavior. These twins almost share 100% of their genes however, it has been shown that the only behavior that has been affected is their personality. Yet the personality has been observed to be different by 54% compared between twins who are raised in different environments (DANIEL GOLEMAN 1986). Showing that nurture is a lot more in control of how one acts and how they are more influenced by their environment. It becomes dangerous when one’s environment can begin to affect their behavior, as they can stray for the worst and make situations like past serial killers come true. Personality being affected by the environment can not be prevented, however, the type of environment that will influence future personalities can be changed and made for the better. They can be improved upon to prevent any future serial killers from being
In general, one’s environment cannot directly affect one’s genetics within their lifetime. Even evolution, an example of nurture changing nature, often
The Nature versus Nurture debate concerns the relative importance of an individual's innate qualities versus personal experiences in determining or causing differences in physical and behavioral traits. (Ridley, Matt. "What Makes You Who You Are." Time Magazine. 25 May 2003).
Throughout the years, it has been debated whether people are born the way they will be forever or if the society they grow in creates all of their attributes. This nature versus nurture debate affects many aspects of life, including the treatment of serial killers and psychopaths, and recognition of emotional and mental disorders, the acceptance of homosexuality, and even video game regulation. The nature theory states that only a person’s genes develop their personality, while the nurture theory states that personality is developed only because of the impact of society (human). This debate has been a controversial issue since the beginning of sociology, the study of society and its impact on the humans that live in it
The importance of nurturing is nearly boundless, and there is no better evidence than the oft-cited case of identical twins who, despite identical nuclear genomes and mitochondrial DNA, will duly differ in physique and behaviour if raised (i.e., nurtured) in

The basic elements of the nature-nurture controversy, debates the genetic or environmental effects of IQ, personality and behavioral differences in humans. Nature describes an inherited trait, otherwise known as the genes, containing the genetic code for each individual born. These genes contribute the physical characteristics, for example: eye color, skin pigmentation, hair texture, blood type, longevity, etc. Genes impose certain diseases, such as Huntington 's Chorea, Breast Cancer, Down Syndrome, and many more. Nurture describes an influence on the individual by the surrounding environment. This surrounding environment includes: parenting, culture, learned experiences, nutrition, exposure to toxins, pollutants and medications. In summary, scholars have been in debate for years over the issue determining the development of an individual from birth to an adult. Are issue of IQ, personality and behavior, inborn or are they learned? Or is it both? The nature-nurture controversy continues still today (McLeod, S. A. (2007).
In society, not one person is alike. By saying this, many people believe that they strongly take after their parents. Meaning they think Nature is a big part in their life and why they are who they are. The genes in each cell in us humans determine the different traits that we have, more dominantly on the physical connections like eye color, hair color, ear size, height, and other traits. However, it is still not known whether the more abstract attributes like personality, intelligence, sexual orientation, likes and dislikes are gene-coded in our DNA. The nurture theory has experiments showing a child’s behavior with the environment as to adult behavior. In the Nature Vs Nurture debate, everyone has their own thoughts and ideas on each
Nature versus Nurture has been a prolonged debate since the beginning of modern science. The argument is whether our characteristics, personality and behavior are affected by the environment or heredity. The nature theory is that our genes and hereditary plays a factor on how we look to the different traits we have. On the other hand, the nurture theory is that the environment and our personal experiences has an impact on who we are. Therefore, both factors play a major role in determining why some people commit serious crimes or to study if an adopted child has more in common with their biological family or adopted family.
Introduction As part of this assignment the writer will examine evidence that human behaviour is driven by our biology. It is important to consider social and cultural influences as evidence against the biological perspective in shaping human behaviour. It is well known that both biological and socio-cultural factors play a role in how humans behave so it is important to consider the interplay between both perspectives. This is what is known as The Nature vs Nurture debate in psychology and this is what the writer will focus on for the purpose of this assignment.
Nature is genes and it contributes to personality. Anais and sam were twins and separated at birth, and their personality are quite the same; they are both spunky, dramatic,Creative careers, both of them talk with their hands. The Jim twins were separated at birth, but they are amazing alike, This is why they both had the same IQ, same jobs of Deputy sheriff and after that was woodworking, they had wives with the same name Linda and Betty. Twins half of the time has the same homasexality by genes. Marjorie and Jenna were both Religious.
An individual’s physical features can be identified as identical to the one that resembles his or her parents. The resemblance may feature the individual’s eyes from one of the parents. However, it is important to note that the personality and the talents of the individual may not be identical from the parents. This means that the environment in which the individual grew up may play part in the individual to have the talent or the personality. I believe that our behaviors are influenced by the environment that surrounds us. This because as the cultural aspects are changing, so as our behaviors changes too (Gander, 2003). It is important to note that the coding of the genes in each of the cell in the human beings is determined by the different
Of course, to every argument there has to be two sides. Some scientists argue that the way we are and act is not necessarily all determined by our genes. Believers of this side think that our behavioral aspects are derived from the environment in which we are brought up in. In the theory of nurture, our behaviors are not instinctive, but are learned throughout our lives. For example, we all laugh and cry at different time and under different circumstances. As humans, we learn from our surroundings and are influenced by our peers and parents. Another example of the role of nurture explaining our behaviors is that fact that we learn our fears and phobias. The key difference is that nurture alters itself from the fact that our biological make up is the only explanation for our behavior.
