The European conquests mostly had a negative effect on the Native American culture and population in general. Diseases that the Europeans brought over inadvertently helped wipe out a majority of the Native population. They were forced to move off their lands and totally change their way of life. I am sure the conquests brought some modernization to the Native American culture and life that could have made things better for them. Though the disease, loss of land and loss of life far out weighed any good they brought over. The European explorers also felt they could exploit the Indians for labor to aid them in developing these new lands. The Catholic Church also made it a priority to convert them to Christianity and try to “civilize” them.

The most significant changes were the Europeans domination of large plots of land called “manors”. Spain would now rule a vast empire for the next 350 years structured on factors such as labor and exploitation of the Indian population. With many Spaniards going over seas to find riches, diseases followed them causing problems for New World natives due to their lack of immunities. With the trouble caused upon natives, individuals like Bartolomé de Las Casas attempted to bring awareness and a halt against the oppression of the Indians.
While we can’t deny the fact that the Columbian Exchange had a lasting impact on the New World, many of its effects were negative rather than positive. The introduction of European diseases devastated the Native American population, along with the terrible conditions they were forced to live in. Many prominent historians argue a clash between culture and religious philosophy was the primary cause of conflict between European settlers in North America and Native Americans. However, a closer analysis of American history suggests otherwise. While a clash in cultures and religious differences did exist, the European domination of Native Americans was primarily fueled by European economic motivations, a desire for valuable natural resources and a craving to expand the American colonial system. Due to this, the conflict was inevitable.

European Exploration had few, if any, positive effects on the Indians. The Natives’ contact with the European settlers led to their displacement and death from disease and war. The negative effects outweighed the good intentions, which included attempting to Christianize and educate America’s original residents. It is estimated that the native population decreased by nearly 50 percent due to disease alone, beginning with the first contact between the Indians and explorers in the 16th century. The European settlers failed to understand the Natives’ concept of maintaining hunting and fishing grounds, to Europeans, land that wasn't cultivated was wasted.

The arrival of Europeans to the New World brought about many changes to Native American life, and their world would never be the same. This act gave the white settlers a great advantage in the expense of the Native Indians land where they plant and burn resources that helped them survive for generations. Despite the intensive study of knowing how many people resided in the Americas before Columbus contact, it has been unable to reach a consensus regarding the consequences of European settlement in the decimation of native population. Considering that Alan Brinkley states “ How to balance the many achievements of European civilization in the New World after 1492 against the terrible destruction of native peoples that accompanied it is, in the end, less a historical question, perhaps, than a moral one “; In my opinion historians be addressing other issues, for instances how European encounter influence Native American’s patterns of health and disease. Furthermore, Historians should study about the consequences the past have today in the American
