Exploration European Exploration had few, if any, positive effects on the Indians. The Natives’ contact with the European settlers led to their displacement and death from disease and war. The negative effects outweighed the good intentions, which included attempting to Christianize and educate America’s original residents. It is estimated that the native population decreased by nearly 50 percent due to disease alone, beginning with the first contact between the Indians and explorers in the 16th century. The European settlers failed to understand the Natives’ concept of maintaining hunting and fishing grounds, to Europeans, land that wasn't cultivated was wasted. Even in the eighteenth century, when the Atlantic slave trade reached its peak and was a source of misery and death for millions, most of the continent was unaffected. The exploration had quite the opposite effect on Europeans they received resources that they didn’t have before like corn and chocolate. One of the few things that hurt Europeans by them exploring is the conflicts they started, causing their people to die. They received new lands and many times fought and killed for it, instead of making compromises. They didn’t understand the Natives’ and were more cultivated and educated so they thought of themselves superior to the Indians’. Therefore often not feeling the need to respect them and they couldn’t communicate very well because of the language barrier they had. Several European countries began “the great race” to establish control of North and South America. Europeans had an open option to find refuge in religious persecution. War between the countries became inevitable, as these countries began to fight for positions in America, there were several strains on the relationship of the competing nations.
