“Standing in a crowded room and I can’t see your face” (Jess Glynne). Today teens are absorbed in technology and communicating through social media that they rarely have face-to-face interactions. If someone was to walk into a room full of teens this lyric depicts what they would see, people not communicating in person but everyone with their head down looking at their phone. Recent studies have shown that 22% of teenagers log on to their favorite social media site more than 10 times a day, and more than half of adolescents log on to a social media site more than once a day (O’Keefe). Social media has had a huge affect on social interactions and has changed the style of communicating drastically. Social media has negatively affected teens social interactions and has caused them to overshare information, neglect to form strong relationships, and lessen their interpersonal skills.
Social media has had a negative effect on social interaction. Social media makes people feel more inclined to share personal information or say certain things that they wouldn’t normally say in person because they are behind a screen. Keller describes the false sense of trust we feel on social media in saying ”First, when we communicate through social media, we tend to trust the people on the other end of the communication, so our messages tend to be more open” (Keller). When people are talking online they tend to feel that the information they are sharing will be kept confidential and could never be shared with the world. However, this is not the case, information that is shared on the internet can be spread and seen by thousands of people. When people put this personal information on the internet, it could be harmful to them in the future and could be seen by future employers, companies, and peers. Oversharing has also led to cyberbullying. People feel that their identity will remain unknown and that they are liable to say anything they want on the internet even if it will hurt someone else. Cyberbullying has become widespread across the world and is the result of this false sense of trust that is felt while communicating on the internet.
