The National Endowment for the Arts was created by an act of the U.S Congress in 1965 as an independent agency of the federal government of the U.S. Congress created the National Endowment of the Arts (NEA) to support and fund projects displaying artistic excellence. The grant money that the NEA receives comes from American taxpayers, furthermore that money has been used to fund art and more that are labeled “controversial”. In March of 2017, the Trump administration made a proposal to eliminate federal funding for the program. The NEA is a wonderful program that helps bring light to controversial subjects, creates regulations, and free speech. The grants that are given to artist helps them create unique pieces of work, creating a light upon controversial subjects being hidden in the dark. A controversial piece of art that has gotten huge amounts of attention is “Chris Ofili’s “Holy Virgin Mary” a representation of the Virgin Mary with elephant dung on her breast”, it offended may religious people across the U.S (David). Ofili’s reasoning to creating this certain piece of work was to attract attention and starting conversations about the current health of politics, religion, and Pop culture. This creation brought so much disgust by a catholic named Rudolph W. Giuliani who in addition is the Mayor of New York tried to cancel NEA funding to the museum showcasing Ofili’s art. This action made by the Mayor was so controversial that it went all the way to the Supreme
Every day we see art whether it is a pattern, sculpture, or even a picture. Art is everywhere. For artists to show their work they would go under the government process of the NEA. This program is wonderful on what they do with art. The government funding of art through the NEA is beneficial which helps art programs increase with money donations, the right to express your freedom, and lastly to show the public what they are wanting to see.
Once gracing the lavish floor of Getty Center, the Coronation of the Virgin which was painted by the extraordinary Italian artist Gentile da Fabriano in 1420, attracted many attentions by its sacredness, powerfulness and magic of the Christ. At 36 ⅝ inches and 25 ¼ inches size tempera, Christ gently places the ornate gold grown upon Virgin Mary's slightly bowed head by the watching of angels from either side as she becomes the Queen of Heaven. Since the first century, Christianity has played an important role in Western Art, which has inspired numerous artists in making their masterpieces. However, artists must follow the religious ‘rules to build up the imagery of the Christ, and educate audience about the religious. Coronation of the Virgin by Fabriano is a perfect presentation of that.
In the early years of the United States the government was able to function and operate all of its affairs rather easily. This would change as more and more technology was invented and the industry rapidly grew throughout the nation. In the early 1800's services provided by the government were limited to the areas of defense, foreign affairs, mail service, commerce between the colonies and money. These few service with the exception of national defense required only a few thousand government employees. However, in the late 1800's the nation began to rapidly grow economically the number of government employees had to grow as well to maintain the services that were being provided in the early years. Farmers were asking for government
I am honored to be among the commendable students whom are being considered to be a part of such a prestigious organization, The National Honor Society. I have been wanting to be a part of this organization the second I stepped into this school. Of course I have worked vigorously for it, there has not been one year here at Lone Star where I have not been in less than 3 Pre-AP or AP classes with averages frequently resulting in an A. I work hard everyday and night in order to ensure my success now and in the future. National Honor Society is an exceptional group brimmed with bright young men and women who create the world of tomorrow. I, Jadzia Sanchez, Class of 2017, yearn to be a part of such a group. I have been a part of theatre in both middle school and high school, I am a very active thespian and have branched out by joining acting classes outside of school.
One pleasant afternoon, my classmates and I decided to visit the Houston Museum of Fine Arts to begin on our museum assignment in world literature class. According to Houston Museum of Fine Art’s staff, MFAH considers as one of the largest museums in the nation and it contains many variety forms of art with more than several thousand years of unique history. Also, I have never been in a museum in a very long time especially as big as MFAH, and my experience about the museum was unique and pleasant. Although I have observed many great types and forms of art in the museum, there were few that interested me the most.
Throughout history there have been many public funding’s that contributed to the world of art. Whether anyone realizes it or not, artists have a lot of responsibilities to try and please the public when they are working for the public. Also, there are numerous regional issues that greatly influence decisions about publicly funded art. Art is very important when forming a sense of nation character, therefore, we should support the public funding of art in America. Art is an important part of society and it can also be a very valuable part of our everyday lives. However, there are many positive and negative effects when it comes to the public funding of art in America. Supporters claim that subsidizing the arts pays for itself. These supporters suggest that the arts are what drive the economy of businesses within a community.
The National Endowment for the Arts is an independent agency of the federal government specifically designed to support and enhances the art community for minority groups. The NEA was founded in 1965 and has controlled the art community ever since. This has aided in censoring works of supposedly obscene and controversial art. The elimination of the NEA, or making it a private organization, would free much needed public tax dollars to go to more important parts of the nations budgets, as well as open the art communities up for the freedom to exhibit the controversial pieces of art work the NEA deems inappropriate.
Positioned alongside Central Park in the heart of New York City, The Metropolitan Museum of Art is one of the largest and most influential art museums in the world. The Met houses an extensive collection of curated works that spans throughout various time periods and different cultures. The context of museum, especially one as influential as the Met, inherently predisposes its visitors to a certain set of understandings that subtly influence how they interpret and ultimately construct meanings about each individual object within the museum. Brent Plate in Religion, Art, and Visual Culture argues that “objects obtain different meanings in different locations and historical settings.”An object placed on display behind a glass case inside a museum would hold a vastly different meaning if it was put on sale by a street vendor, like the ones who set up their tables in close proximity to the Met. The different meanings that objects are able to obtain is attributed to the relationships that are established between the object itself and the environment that surrounds it. These relationships often involve the kind of audience that a museum attracts, where the work is exhibited, and how the exhibits within a museum is planned out. Museums subsequently have the ability to control how these relationships are established which influences the way a viewer is able to construct meaning. When a visitor observes an object on display at the Met, they instinctively construct a certain set of
I am honored to be one of the students being considered to be a member of the National Honor Society. It is an organization that many students work hard to be in and look forward to being a part of. I have been waiting for this opportunity and have been working very hard to be offered a chance to be inducted to the National Honor Society. I think I deserve to be a part of this organization because I demonstrate the qualities needed to succeed in the National Honor Society and I will work hard to contribute to it.

Most people may not know who Chris Ofili is, but chances are that many of them know one of his works, his painting “The Holy Virgin Mary”, displayed at the Brooklyn Museum of Art’s “Sensation” exhibition in 1999. The painting was extremely controversial because of Mary’s exposed breast being made of elephant dung and because of the porno cutouts surrounding Mary. Mayor Rudolph Giuliani and others, saying that such works were not appropriate for public display, immediately attacked the painting, along with the entire showcase of art by different artists. These sharp criticisms were an extreme injustice, condemning the work “The Holy Virgin Mary” based on prejudiced views of what is and what is not
This piece was created during a time of political and social change. Increased political awareness and a focus on celebrity demanded art that was more
Ofili, compared to Yinka Shoniabre, has never abandoned the idea that notions of race and identity are important factors within his artwork, Ofili quite simply understands that playing along side his stereotypes has offered his career for where he is today. ‘…Portraiture and black subjectivity represent important philosophical vectors in Ofili’s powerful figurative art, as if this conjunction between figuration and representation were not already visibly defined in the 181 watercolours.’ (Okwui Enwezor : Chris Ofili : Tate : 72)

By analyzing two separate works on exhibit at the Met, I will pose the argument that museums offer a unique expression of a world view that is dictated through every element of its construction.
Public art catches an abundance of attention and the artist receives so much recognition, there’s no need for the government to show it off even more. Instead of the government using their money for art, they can use it on more important things, such as employment and education for people who have no money to do so. With the government investing in art, they will not benefit from it a whole lot. They will be able to show it off to the public but will receive nothing from this.
