Net Neutrality Protest

"Most people in America use the internet, and when they use it they should expect to be free to search and post what they want; that is except unless they're intentionally posting or viewing something that is against the law. It's been a theory for some time that the government can view the American peoples' internet searches and browsing history, but are they and should they be doing it at all? Like in the earlier stages of our country, we will and most likely continue to have conflict with our government about certain issues, but the internet and things concerning it seems to be one of the major issues right now.

Our group’s topic is net neutrality. The reason for choosing net neutrality as the focus of our project is because it is a current topic in our country that is being debated about, thus making it controversial. Because the recent repeal on net neutrality affects the majority of the people living in the United States, the action cannot simply be ignored. Our group had many intentions in choosing our topic. First off, we want to explain what net neutrality is in order to get rid of any misconceptions about it. Then, we want to illustrate the effect of repealing net neutrality would have in our country. Throughout the span of 2008-2010, another net neutrality bill was introduced in congress regarding Comcast blocking files but, Comcast sued the FCC saying that the FCC has no authority over their internet service. . The FCC attempted to apply a cease and desist order against Comcast but eventually they canceled it. The outcome of this dispute created an Open Internet Order by Democrat Julius Genachowski (Reardon, 2015). This is very significant because this is what made the net neutrality rules official in the FCC regulation. This order explains that people can access content to the Internet without experiencing blocking or slowing down. In addition, broadband providers have to be clear about their management networks and practices.

To be completely honest, I have never heard Net-Neutrality before this discussion post. After doing some research on this topic, I’ve come to the conclusion that I am against Net-Neutrality.

Net neutrality has been around for quite some time but it was up until now when that us internet users really pay attention to it because our President Donald Trump wants to pass a new net neutrality rule/bill that makes people pay to use apps that were meant to be free like Facebook and Twitter that millions use. “June 2003 Tim Wu coins the phrase network neutrality which was later shortened to net neutrality”. "Growing up, the internet wasn't much of an influence on me as it is now. Homework was done all in paper, every video assignment was done in class, and to call or play with friends, well that was done during recess face to face. On May 16, 2018, history may have witnessed net neutrality being saved. This came from a 52-47 vote in the Senate, which overturned the decision of the Federal Communications Commission, FCC, to repeal the doctrines within the Open Internet Order of 2015. This power comes from the Congressional Review Act and will be voted on by the House of Representatives and then to be potentially be signed by the President of the United States. This seems like bureaucracy that does not matter to the individual citizen, however it may shape the internet and affect all of its users.

Net neutrality is one of the major issues the US is facing today. It is a very complicated matter between FCC and cable companies. Net neutrality is a principle that all online traffic should be treated equally. However, cable companies do not agree with this principle. They want to introduce an idea called fast lane. This is where customers are required to pay extra money to maintain high speed internet, but the internet speed remain the same. All they are doing is reducing the speeds for others who don’t pay extra and overall speed remains the same. For example, a car can be driven on a highway with speed limit 70mph. If we introduce the idea of fast lane, all we are doing is reducing the speed limit to 30mph for people who don’t pay extra.

According to me, Net neutrality is vital. It gives the Internet its character, personalization, and charm. Net neutrality is not something to merely have “thoughts” on. We must act to protect it. Net neutrality is a primary principle of the modern Internet.net neutrality prevents ISPs from favoring one site or service over another. It ensures that Internet Service Providers (ISPs) don’t treat content differently depending on its source. Net neutrality is a series of regulations designed for the average Internet user, not for the cable giants. Removing net neutrality regulations is going to be annoying at best, and downright evil at worst. I just cannot understand Ajit Pai’s argument, because it is flawed as he tirelessly works to remove net neutrality. There is a severe corporate fascist takeover in the USA with Trump’s administration taking charge. The Republican party funded by a lobby of corporations is just showing its true colors. It is essential to understand as to why net neutrality is critical. The multiple reasons are ISP should treat all Internet traffic equally without to regards to the payload within the interchange. But some ISPs wish to control certain types of data (e.g., video streaming) while not controlling others (e.g., email).
