The best know Plateau group are the Nimiipuu, which mean the people, but everyone know them as the Nez Perce. Nez Perce is from the French which means “pierced nose,” although that none of the Nez Perce people have their nose pierced. Washington, Oregon, and Idaho was the original region of the Nimiipuu people. Their area also included the Bitterroot Mountains, Snake River, and the Clearwater Valley. There was 70 permanent villages that included 6,000 Nimiipuu living in them during 1805. The area of the Nimiipuu mixed between the mountains and the lower plateau regions. There was two major rivers that cut many deep canyons throughout their region, these rivers were the Columbia and Snake rivers. In the center of their region concluded two …show more content…
These horses let them visit the Plains which lead them to be introduced to different customs, like living in tipis and hunting bison. In 1805, Lewis and Clark came encounter with the Nimiipuu people, which was their first encounter with Americans. They soon approached fur trading with both the British and American companies and started earning interest. The Nimiipuu people had a great relationship with both the British and Americans but later in 1836 that all changed. Christian missionaries started moving into this region and tried to convert the Nimiipuu people. Later on in about 1844, the United States took over the area and became in control of the Nimiipuu people. Those Nimippuu people that converted over to Christianity signed the Walla Walla Council Treaty in 1855. By signing this treaty they gain an enormous amount of their original land base. Later they found that there was gold in this region and started a new treaty asking these people to sign and move off the land. Most people ignored the new treaty and stayed in their original land. That new treaty was called the Thief Treaty because of the illegal reservation boundaries. With all the conflict with the reservation land, the Nimiipuu lost another 542,000 acres of land because in 1893, the government sold it to the white people. In 1927, The Nimiipuu government was formed. Although in 1934, the people voted …show more content…
One of the most famous ones was that there was a monster that was eating all the people. They found a courageous coyote that would have a contest with the monster. The contest was to see who could inhale each other. Unfortunaltey the coyote could not inhale the monster but the monster inhaled the coyote. Luckily the coyote brought knifes to go after the monsters heart. The coyote successfully reached the monster heart and started cutting up parts of the monsters heart to give to the Nimiipuu people. After realizing he had no more parts for the tribe he gave them the blood of the monster hear which lead to making the Nimiipuu tribe more brave, intelligent, and
For close to 70 years after their first initial meeting with the Lewis and Clark in the year 1805, the Nez Perce were in good terms with the white man (West). The Nez Perce were located in what is now known as Washington, Idaho, and Oregon. The
The Sioux and Chippewa Indian tribes’ have a drastically different way of living compared to what other people are accustomed to in terms of their history, clothing, tools, and weapons needed for survival. The Sioux Indians were originally from Asia, but migrated to America about 30,000 years ago. Their long, straight jet-black hair resembles that of the Asian descendants. The Sioux tribes were located in The Great Plains, which consists of 7 different states Minnesota, Wisconsin, North and South Dakota; however, they were also known to live in parts of Nebraska, Illinois, and Montana. “The name Sioux is an abbreviation of Nadouessioux. (Britannica) The name was given to them by the Ojibwa (Chippewa). Sioux means, “Little snake”. The Sioux tended to follow the pattern of the buffalo, which is why they are found in multiple locations.
The Cherokee tribe is known as one of the earliest and largest Indian tribe in North America. They are federally recognized even today among several states(museum). While they slowly became Americanized by the Europeans who came over to America, some still practice their typical Indian rituals publicly today. Most converted to Christianity and their government in Oklahoma is based off the American government with three branches. One would believe that the Trail of Tears could have completely vanquished these Indians but many made it through the horrendous trial and kept the Indian bloodline going even present day (Conley).
I picked the Chinook tribe, which is a northwestern tribe located around the columbian river, or today's Washington and Oregon. The land and climate really defined how the Chinook people lived and is why it’s defined as a folk culture. The Chinook tribe is around large forests that the tribe uses to build canoes and large houses. The Chinook tribe would build these large houses and many people could live inside, these houses were made out of red cedar a tree that was very abundant in the area. The Climate where the Chinook tribe located was very harsh but easy at times. The climate existed of very rainy seasons with very hot seasons that defined what the Chinook tribe would wear. The Chinook tribe would wear little to nothing on the hot
The soldiers told the Sioux that as long as they gave up some of their land they would give them a peace treaty. The Sioux no longer wanted to fight so they agreed and gave up some of their land to the government.
The Wampanoag' is a Native American individuals in North America. They were a free alliance comprised of a few tribes. Numerous Wampanoag individuals today are selected in two governmentally perceived tribes, the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe and the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head, or four state-perceived tribes in Massachusetts. In the start of the seventeenth century, at the season of first contact with the English, the Wampanoag lived in southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island, a domain that incorporated present-day Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket islands. Their populace numbered in the thousands because of the extravagance of nature and their development of corn, beans and squash. Three thousand Wampanoag lived on Martha's Vineyard alone.
The Nez-Perce Indians got their new name that we call them today due to the French seeing the Indians with pierced noses and call them Nez-Perce meaning "pierced nose" and the name stuck.
There was of course a reason why the whites wanted to take the land from the Native Americans and why the humans wanted to take the land from the Na’vi. Gold, which is of course very valuable, was discovered on Cherokee land in 1828. Now, not only did the settlers want this land, but the miners did as well. This caused a greater demand for the Cherokee’s land than ever before. It is similar in the movie “Avatar”. The humans are relentless, and will stop at nothing to take the land from the Na’vi people. They want the land for mining a very profitable mineral, that can be worth up to $40 million per kilogram, called Unobtanium.
The Hualapai people are a tribe of Native Americans that are currently living in northwestern Arizona. The name Hualapai means “People of the Tall Pines”(“About Hualapai”). These people have a rich history that is passed on by oral tradition. These people have influences in hunting (“About Hualapai”). Through history, these people have not lost their culture and traditions.
The Chimariko was a small group that is now part of list of extinct tribes in America. According to Kroeber (1976,109) they are a descendent of the Hokan, it is noted that they maintained their original language better than other groups such as Shasta and Pomo. (109) The Chimariko were estimated to be at 250 people in 1849, six people in 1903, and according to Kroeber “In 1906 there remained a toothless old woman and a crazy old man.” (1976,109)
The Treaty of 1868 was between the Navajo and United Stated that was signed in to law in the late 19th century. Navajo leaders made an agreement for peace and friendship, reservation boundaries, education, land development and ownership. It allowed the
Because of the desire for land and the discovery of gold in Georgia, there was a push in doing what was necessary to remove Indians from their land (Native History Association). This was the time of Manifest Destiny, where white moved all over the country in hopes to spread their culture and customs. This involved them moving onto Indian land (Peppas 2013, 14). Even though gold was found on Cherokee land, the Cherokee could not touch it because the government did not want the Cherokee to have access to the gold. People from all over came to their land to mine the gold (Peppas 2013, 18).
Some of it was not Creek land at all but belonged to Jackson’s allies the Cherokees.” The problem with this situation is that the Andrew Jackson signed the Treaty of Jackson with the Creek but the United States signed a major treaty called the Treaty of Ghent. The British tried to get a separate nation for the Native but that failed so the British abandoned the Natives who allied with
The changes brought on by these new explorers were vast ranging from depletion of local population due to unfamiliar European diseases to new settlements to increased harvesting of resources. There were also treaties made with the native Indians for land or goods. Still seeking the Northwest Passage, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark began an expedition to the Oregon coast in 1804. While still failing to find that passage, they do explore more of the west and PNW than anyone up to that time. Among journals of native plants, native people, and many maps that opened the way for settlers, Lewis and Clark opened the way for trade with their revelation that the
I chose to research the Oneida Nation Tribe of Indians of Wisconsin Elderly Heath Care. Here is a little background on the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin. They are located in Brown and Outagamie Counties. They are descendants of an indigenous Iroquoian-speaking nation that arose in the present-day central-western New York. The Oneida Tribe is a sovereign government. Oneida means “long awaited” and they spoke Oneida. Lastly, they have three clans: Turtle, Bear, and Wolf Clan. The Turtle Clan represents the shifting of the earth and the cycles of the moon. The people of this clan represent the well of information and the keepers of the land. The Bear Clan known as Medicine people, the healers. There are stories passed down about how the Bear
