I will be creating a law stating that smoking should be banned from all public places. I am creating this law because I think it's important that people feel free to go out in the community without having to worry about breathing in secondhand smoke. By enforcing this law it will also encourage people to stop smoking since they will no longer be able to smoke public places. By doing this, it will increase business for all the restaurants and bars that used to allow smoking. People will be more likely to go there now because they will know longer have to breathe in secondhand smoke. Review of the facility policy titled, Smoking Policy, which was undated, identified residents are strictly prohibited from smoking in the building/rooms/bathrooms. All cigarette butts shall be disposed of in a properly designated smoking receptacle, which shall be fireproof. If a resident is deemed "unsafe" to handle their own cigarettes, the staff will immediately secure such items and will pass out cigarettes hourly and will light the individual's cigarettes. This policy shall be set forth to ensure safety for all with no exceptions to be made. On page 59 of the NAHS parent handbook for the 2015-2016 school year, you will notice a “Smoking Policy”. Northampton Area High School’s policy on smoking and tobacco is adequate enough to do its job. I will agree on their “no smoking” policy which is very vague as it is listed in the policy. Further study into this line reveals the real truth which is that no student may light and inhale any tobacco product that requires a ‘drag’ and exhalation. That being said, I have some complaints on the rest of the policy. It is mentioned that there is to be no “... lighted or unlighted cigarette, cigar, and pipe; other lighted smoking products; and smokeless tobacco in any form”(NAHS Smoking Policy). I believe that smokeless tobacco should be allowed, since it does not give off toxins, it is not a threat to other students.
