In my opinion I think that non-violence means when a person does not use force. The person is someone who is understanding. Yes, I am familiar when it comes to non-violence. My mom taught me and my siblings non-violence. I grew up poor so of course we had to understand that we can’t get everything we want. So when people would start fights of course we would back down . They would call us names for backing down but we understood what nonviolence meant. I would say yes that my mother succeeded in teaching me and family about non-violence. If my mother hadn’t have taught me and my siblings non-violence . We would have been in so much trouble that we probably wouldn't have gotten where we are
These means are what our oppressor has instilled in us to believe. In today’s news, we are taught to turn the other cheek when a person does us wrong. Although Mr. King referred to that method as non- violent, it could easy be considered acquiescence. By turning the other cheek, you are letting that person know that it is acceptable to continue to behave the way they have been behaving. This method is also easily saying that as long as you ensure in me you will not oppress me in that manner again, everything will be fine. The oppressor on the other hand, becomes smarter, and they simply advance in other ways to oppress. With non- violence you are simply agreeing that you will not destroy any of the oppressors property which continuing to be treated as you were
Nonviolence has exactly the opposite effect. If, for every violent act committed against us, we respond with nonviolence, we attract people’s support. We can gather the support of millions who have a conscience and would rather see a nonviolent resolution to problems.” (Chavez 1). Chavez compares non-violence to violence to show why non-violence is a safer and more humane way of solving problems within society.
Non-violence is a tactic was used by many influential rights activists throughout history. One of the reasons it works so well is due to human morals. To become a truly successful campaign it should not be run on the basis of humiliating or besting the opponent, rather one should seek friendship and a better understanding of another (Source B). Martin Luther King, Jr. once stated that “Nonviolence is the answer to the crucial political and moral question of our time - the need for man to overcome oppression and violence without resorting to violence and oppression” (Martin Luther King Jr. - Acceptance Speech, paragraph 4). He believed that violence could not come to an end if those attempting global peace and equality employed violence in their movements. President Barack Obama spoke about this during a 2009 Nobel lecture, stating that “As someone who stands here as a direct consequence of Dr. King’s life’s work, I am living testimony to the moral force of nonviolence” (Barack Obama Nobel Prize Acceptance Speech, paragraph 14). However, he also justified fighting evil with violence, making the claim that “A nonviolent movement could not have halted Hitler’s armies.” Both Martin Luther King, Jr. and President Barack Obama agree that unjustified violence will solve none of the world’s political and moral issues.
While when discussing the history of the world’s power forces, violence makes for stimulating discussion, other tactics were put to good use, one of these alternatives being non-violence. With the guidance of three worldwide heroes - Mohandas Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., and Nelson Mandela - with contagious optimism and high spirits, it became apparent just how much of a difference could be made carried out through non-violent terms. Mankind was introduced to another way to resolve major problems just as effectively, if not more, than violence could.
The main idea of nonviolence is for each person to use peaceful strategies to argue for what they personally feel is right. I don’t know. I just don’t know what I should do. Father says that I have to join the Sons of Liberty, but I’m not sure that I want to. He says that they fight for a independence, freedom, and not having taxes. I don’t know much about taxes but, I have noticed that ever since they have gone into place, we haven’t had much food anymore. The conversation at dinner tonight got more tense than regular. Father said that tomorrow night we are going to have to give up our beds to British soldiers. I don’t want to give up my room to our enemy. Father says that we also have to feed them as well. We wouldn’t have any food left. Father then said that we were either going to leave our house and move so far west that the soldiers couldn’t
Violence is contagious, it spreads through a population like a virus, and yet we still pass it along to our children. Violence is the manifest for War; War is the breeding ground for violence because violence knows no disregards nor does it have a conscience of right or wrong. Violence is the opposite of progression and advancement, because it promotes anger and hostility. So why do we think in terms of violence first and non-violence second?
