Dry Creek station was likely built in the spring of 1860 by Bolivar Roberts and his crew. It was one of the last stations to be built by the Pony Express. It is located four miles north of Highway 50, in Lander County, Nevada. The station was used by the Pony Express and Overland Stage as a home station (historic). The Pony Express riders would go from Dry Creek westward to the north (expedition.com). The riders had a high chance of getting attacked by the Native Americans and this proved to be true at Dry Creek. They had early problems with the Indians, which caused an attack on the workers of the station on May 21, 1860. Willow creek found at the north end of the lake and Yosemite national Park east of the lake town can give you physical examples of the area, when you enter the town you drive down a mountain into town that is easily identifiable once in Bass Lake if looking west. Bass Lake covers an area of 2.493 miles the lake's temperature changes throughout the year getting up to 89 degrees F in July and as low as 28 degrees F and December. Oak Woodland and grassland make up much of Bass Lakes terrain. The Lake itself is a beautiful feature of the area but you can also find pine trees along the willow creek the leads into the river or travel 17 miles of the road and find Half Dome inside Yosemite National Park.

One of Barry Counties most visited and largest lakes is none other than Gun Lake. The lakefront is home to a deep Indian history that reflects the extensive development of the surrounding area over the years. The lake is a key area in Barry County for recreation and tourism, but its rich history is its most important aspect.

This summer one scientific thing I did was use a water mat on Lake Winnipesaukee. A water mat is a giant raft that floats on the surface of the water. It's constructed from the same styrofoam type material that a pool noodle is made out of. It is extremely versatile and can be used in many different ways. The way that I enjoyed using it the most was to jump from our pontoon boat onto the mat. I would make my way to the edge of the boat, steady myself, and leap, landing directly on top of the green float. The impact of the jump made my feet feel sore for a few seconds. When I was ready, I would hurdle myself off the mat and climb back onto the boat. While this activity does require a lot of skill, it requires a lot of science as well.

The Battle of Lake Champlain was an important victory because it created a dent in the British plan to invade from the North and it ultimately convinced the British to surrender the War of 1812, which caused the US to gain worldwide respect. To begin, the British had been trying to invade America from the south, but they had very little success. They then decided to try and invade from the North, using Plattsburg, a city on the shores of Lake Champlain, as their headquarters for the invasion. This is why it was so vital that the US won the Battle of Lake Champlain because it hurt the British plan to invade by destroying a major part of their plan. The city of Gem Lake, Minnesota shares much of its history with the larger, surrounding cities of White Bear Lake and Little Canada. Originally a wooded land covered with lakes, the area now known today as Gem Lake remained uncolonized until the 1840s. As early as 1843, French explorer Jean Nicollet drew a map depicting “Bear’s Lake.” This was the first record of the present day area, and it would signify the impending colonization.

Set high in the Adirondack Mountains range, Lake Placid, a sizeable freshwater lake, lends its name to the village which lies on its shores. Ripe with history, Lake Placid has flourished as an Olympic Village since its settlement in the nineteenth century. Over the course of these last two-hundred years, residents have built and rebuilt Lake Placid Homes which have experienced history in the making firsthand.

The water is surrounded by beach like sand, picnic tables, and playgrounds for summer family fun. Although swimming is at your own risk the lake is cool and refreshing. Several different species of fish have made this beautiful lake home so fishing is offered with the proper fishing licenses. Boat rentals are also available seven days a week for reasonable prices.

With it's many coves and tributaries, boaters can find a private spot on Lake Travis to ski, wakeboard or just get away from the crowds. Other boaters head to Devil's Cove on the weekends to tether boats together and create a big floating party. Other party spots include Carlos and Charlie's and The Iguana Grill. The Oasis offers a more subdued atmosphere and boasts the best setting for a famous Lake Travis

James A. Reed offers stocked lakes and ponds that total up to two hundred fifty acres. In 1957 the Missouri Department of Conservation started the construction of the water holes. There are a total of twelve lakes which are all fishable. The biggest lake (Catclaw Lake) is just over forty-two acres and located on the outer edge of the Conservation ground. The Department dug the lakes based on the traffic of wildlife in the area. All are stocked yearly and monitored to keep the fish population even between the lakes. Every lake has at least largemouth bass, channel catfish, crappie, bluegill, green sunfish, redear sunfish, and bullheads. Only four of the lakes contain striped bass hybrids. There is only a limited amount of fish one can keep so fishing is mainly just catch and release. There are three docks provided for fishing throughout the entire acreage; the rest of the fishing is done off shore, on the banks, or in a boat. There are two boats that can be rented out for the day and they are offered only on Gopher Lake. There is one boat ramp for visitors but only four boats are allowed on the lake at a time.

The Lake of Houston is one of the prime tourist destinations in Texas and is a great place for a short vacation or a weekend trip. Being a student athlete at the nearby University, located in the heart of Bellingham, I myself use the lake once, if not twice a day for rowing practice. Considering my constant presence, I have become quite disappointed in the water quality of the lake as well as the debris which roams the murky waters.

Lake Tahoe holds a dear place in my heart because it is one of the most often destinations for our family vacations. I lost count of how many times I have been there. For every occasion, it is just the place to go to. It is such a relaxing place, at least for the weekend I do not have to worry about anything. Lake Tahoe is a very green place to be in California. California is a very dry state and having forests like Lake Tahoe is something to be proud of. It attracts thousands of visitors each year and has numerous activities to do there. Not only is Lake Tahoe extremely beautiful, but it has many ecological features.
