Northern Pike Northern Pike are a big predator in a lake's ecosystem, and a fear to countless fish. Pike have a weird mouth shape for countless reasons. Smaller fish consume about 90% of their diet. Pike are more active in daylight than in nightlight. The mouth is in a duck shape which allows them to swallow bigger fish. Pike can swallow fish ⅓ of their weight. Some of the fish they eat are Yellow Perch, Tullibee, Suckers, Minnows, and other Pike. Pike live in certain parts of a lake, stream, or river. Pike spawn (breed) in April to May. They normally live in shallow weedy areas with a numerous amount of smaller fish. Their average lifespan is 6-8 years old. The eggs are laid on vegetation, deep in the lake. Sometimes they lay
Going to the lake to fish is a great way to start your day. It is so peaceful out there, but some days it is not because of bass fishing has tournaments and it can be really stressful. Bass fishing is a popular sport, but some things can be controversial.
With this aggression, comes the feeding factor. Spotted bass are often found chasing bait, the term bait includes herring, minnows, and any other type of small fish. Spotted bass often position themselves on windy banks or points because the wind will push all of the bait into one area. When the Spotted Bass come onto these points and banks they will push all of the largemouth and smallmouth bass off of these banks. The wind does not always blow in one direction so once the wind changes the Spotted Bass will go find a different bank with bait on it. This is so bad because the wind might be going east, then turn west for a day, then go back to blowing east, when this happens the Spotted Bass push the other fish off of these banks , then the other fish come back when the Spotted Bass leave but then the wind turns again and the Spotted Bass push the other fish away again. Spotted bass are very fast fish and for the bait to survive they have to become faster, the other fish that eat the bait are not as fast as the Spotted Bass so they have a hard time catching the bait. This diffuses a major food source for the other fish species.
Blackfish, a documentary by Gabriela Cowperthwaite, analyzes the horrific treatment, containment, and use of Orca whales within entertainment facilities. The discussion of treatment began in 2010, when Dawn Brancheau was killed and drowned by the whale, Tilikum. Since this incident, there have been multiple investigations into SeaWorld and similar facilities. It is argued that the whales should be released from these facilities due to the posed dangers they have to humans, and themselves.
Smallmouths have both external fertilization and external development. Feeding for smallmouth tops when the temperature is around 78 degrees and starts to slow down once the temperature goes below 40 degrees. The male always guards the eggs and the babies which are known as fry. The spawning usually occurs in April or May unless the temperature stays cold than it can be delayed. The first person to describe a smallmouth bass was Lacepede is 1802. The fry hatch out of their eggs in about a week and then continue to develop for another week. Young smallmouths are fed upon by yellow perch, Northern pike or muskellunge. Bigger bass are only eaten by northern pike, musky but the main predators of smallmouth bass are humans. The lifespan in the wild is normally about seven years, but some will live up to 20 years. In captivity the average age is ten years. When the young hatch out of their eggs they are about 0.2 inches long, very easy prey for a variety of animals. Multiple females will spawn in the nest of one male and an individual female will spawn in more than one. Smallmouth dance and bite each other, this is their mating ritual. In New York the record smallmouth was 8 pounds, 4 ounces caught out of Lake Erie on 6/4/1995 by Andrew C Kartesz. Smallmouth bass are beginning to destroy Brooke trout fisheries and Atlantic salmon fisheries. The meat of a smallmouth is very firm and good tasting so many people catch the fish not only for the fun of the
Summary Alaska is well known for its abundance in oil. Obama has now proposed a bill to ban energy exploration on 12 million acres of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. With this bill comes this are being considered as wilderness and Alaskans are not happy with the bill at all. Many of the people who are Native to this are feel as if they have been disrespected or unconsidered.
Two years ago a documentary was released that completely changed the view of a multi-billion dollar industry forever. This extremely influential and controversial documentary is called Blackfish. Blackfish centers around the story of a killer whale named Tilikum, who is nicknamed Tilly. The documentary was produced to illustrate that SeaWorld, and other sea parks similar to it, do not treat their animals in captivity well. Tilikum had killed one of his trainers in the past year when the documentary began to be filmed. Dawn Brancheau, one of Tilikum’s former trainers was dragged down to the bottom of the tank and held until she drowned on February 24th in 2010. This, sadly, was not the first person to be killed by Tilikum. Tilikum killed three
On stage they are know as the Southern Ravens. They are the newest and most popular k-pop stars at the moment. Girls go crazy for their good looks and dance moves. Is your way of life unamerican? The bald eagle is one of the United States prized living organism and has been the national bird since 1783. However, in recent years these animals have been learning to cope with technological advances from humans. According to R. Russell and J. Franson the biggest causes of mortality in our nation’s bird is electrocution and trauma, poisoning, and disease.
When the creatures still managed to reanimate after thawing, the team looked for physical qualities that might explain this superior resilience. It found that the Alaskan frogs stockpile astonishing amounts of a complex sugar called glycogen in their livers, which grow 1.5-fold relative to body mass as the amphibians prepare for winter. “This frog is like a walking liver,” says zoologist Jon Costanzo of Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, who led the research. The liver later converts this glycogen to glucose, a known cryoprotectant that quickly gets distributed to all the cells in the body when temperatures drop. The Alaskan frogs also accumulated about three times as much of the cryoprotectant urea in their blood plasma compared with frogs
Walleye have a sensitivity to light, so the darker the better. They are fond of gravel beds, rocky spawning areas and those which have good water current during the spring season. When it starts to get warmer and spring season ends, you will find them out at drop offs (hanging out at the drop) and near islands and weed beds. They can be found 60 feet down in the deeper parts of the lake , but you should be able to catch them down at 5’-10’- around the islands and drop off’s.
The seasons of the year determines the Walleye mood. Early spring the walleye are really active and hungry. Most anglers use minnows as bait during the spring of the year on the lake. The walleye tend to be found in shallower waters during the spring also. They are found most commonly in 8-20 feet of water. They do this in order to feed and spawn for
Alaska is home to an amazing habitat of salmon, but it also holds a lot of valuable minerals under the ground that are perfect for mining. Many people believe that the salmon are far more valuable to us then the mine would be, but other people have disagreed and want to build a mine in an area close to the habitat. Today we still have a debate on our hands and I believe that the salmon are irreplaceable and that the miners should find a different location.
An interesting note is that the fins on a trout have no bones, they are primarily composed of fatty deposits, even the tail. Trout have long been considered a bony fish, and internally they are. some consider their skin very tasty and good to eat, (although I don’t recommend it). Trout are so tasty and very popular among fish eaters and restaurants, that they have become farm raised (hatcheries) and sold as well as bread for restocking . Raising or breeding trout is very vital to streams and rivers because of the popularity of fisherman. It is necessary to Replenish these water’s to avoid overfishing and elimination of the
Journalist Stephanie Collins addresses the worldwide phenomenon of the 2013 documentary Blackfish and discusses the constructed truth we are persuaded to believe. The bias presented in this documentary works very effectively and the audience is left to feel the pity for the killer whales of SeaWorld. However, can we believe everything director Gabriela Cowperthwaite presents to us? Have we just fallen victim to the constructed truth of extreme animal activists? Documentaries are known for constructing their own version of the truth they wish to portray.
You may have thought that when you let your cat outdoors that it was safe, but unfortunately, nature is not always pretty. When experts placed webcams around a nest of bald eagles in Pittsburgh, what they found out was shocking. The video footage captured adult eagles returning with a young cat in their talons, and they were feeding it to their two eaglets.
