Nursing is more than a profession taught by science. It is an art that the nurse refines through the creative use of oneself based on the skills and expertise, to transmit emotions and meaning to the patient. Nursing is a process that is subjective and requires interpretation, sensitivity, imagination and active participation. A core skill utilized by a nurse is advocacy, both for our patients and our profession. Our profession requires participation of advocacy at all levels of nursing, starting at the bedside and continuing all the way to nurses in legislation. To be a proficient patient advocate, the nurse must be able to assess the patient’s constant change in physical, psychological, spiritual, and social needs. I apply my knowledge

I would like to go into the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner career field. Pediatric Nurse Practitioners help Pediatricians and other Physicians diagnose and take care of children from infancy to young adults. I have grown up with ten siblings and many more cousins, so I have learned how to deal with children of all ages. Also, I have been interested in the medical field since I was a little girl and I have always loved to help people. I would have liked to be a Pediatrician but I would prefere not be in school for another thirteen years, so I found that the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner was the perfect career for me.

The career path I have chosen to take is in the medical field. My dream from a young age was always to be a nurse. A nurse is a healthcare professional who is focused on caring for people, and making sure that they manage, maintain, and recover patients to the finest state of health (What is Nursing, par.1). Nursing makes up a vast majority of the healthcare industry. There is a huge range of nursing specialties. Nurses work in General and surgical Hospitals, doctor’s offices, nursing care facilities, outpatient facilities, and home health services (Why Be a Nurse, par. 2). Nursing is an extremely flexible career, with one hundred and four specialties and a lot of advanced nursing degrees, so there is something for everyone in this field (Why Be a Nurse, par. 4). Certified registered nurse anesthetists are advanced nurses who provide anesthetics for surgery and trauma. Many people wonder the difference between nurse anesthetist and anesthesiologist. A CRNA is a registered nurse who specialize in anesthesiology with at least one year of critical experience. Anesthesiologists are physicians and they have to complete a one-year internship, three year residency to become certified. A CRNA can administer all kinds of anesthetic work in any place of practice for any operation procedure. CRNAs provide anesthetics to patients, surgeons, anesthesiologists, dentists, podiatrists and other health professionals.

With change comes evolution. Most professions, specifically nurse anesthetist, as we know them today did not begin in the state they are in today. They grew through trial and error. Before revealing the history of this profession and most important, its leading pioneer, one must be familiar with the role of a nurse anesthetist. Nurse anesthetists, often confused with anesthesiologists, are nurses with baccalaureate degrees in nursing and master degrees in anesthesia who are responsible for administering anesthetics to patients preoperational. Contrary, anesthesiologists are physicians whose education requires a baccalaureate degree as well as medical schooling with special education in anesthesia. However, the anesthesia part of the education is very similar for both providers (KANA. 2011).

For my Health Science 1 class we were instructed to choose 3 different careers. The careers to be chosen were a health care career, a career of disinterest, and a career we would like to pursue. I aspire to be a Cardiovascular Perfusionist because it would feel great to be able to prevent someone from dying pre- maturely. I dislike the real estate field because they don't make much money and they do entirely too much work for not much profit. I choose Neurology as my health care career because I like learning about the brain, how it works and how and why people get mental disorders.

The medical field is rapidly growing with so many different careers to choose from. There are many different things that you could specialize in. There are so many opportunities in the medical field for you to grow and become something bigger. A very interesting field to go in is a pediatric nurse. This specific career path interests me because when my little brother was 5 years old he suddenly woke up one morning with his body completely swollen. We immediately rushed him to the hospital. While at the hospital they told us that he had Nephrotic Syndrome. His kidneys weren’t properly working and he was leaking excess protein in his urine. The US News ranked a Nurse Anesthetist number 4 in the top 100 best jobs of 2016. Although satisfying, a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) is a highly stressful nursing specialty (Phillips, 2010). According to Gouveia (2016), a registered nurse is ranked top 5 in most stressful jobs. Some of the brightest and best CRNAs, even past presidents of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) have taken their own life because of addiction (Quinlan, 2009). Substance abuse and addiction is a well-known topic unfortunately, it continues to be an issue and struggle everyday for some anesthesia providers. Nursing is a profession concerned with human responses to actual and potential health problems. Nursing focuses on the care of individuals, families, and communities so they may attain, maintain, or recover optimal health and quality of life. The best qualities that every nurse should have is being compassionate, understanding, honest, and ethical. Nursing offers a variety of specialty areas to further your knowledge. In the future, I would like to aspire for a certification in the specialty area of anesthesia. To become a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), it is important to keep in mind the many years of study that is required, why CRNAs are important in the healthcare field, and the job outlook along with the best places to work.

With the variety of majors and interests college offers, the decision of choosing a career holds a heavy weight. There are many paths one can go to have a successful, fulfilling job for the rest of their lives; this is where college can explore a person’s likes and dislikes. From taking taking the self-assessment, it resulted careers that revolve around medical and/or as educators to help others. These choices seemed very very accurate and possible that I want to pursue. I have always been passionate of caring for others in some source. The four careers that I decided to further research are: occupational therapist, social and human service assistant, pharmacist, and veterinarian.

With all of the different specialties in healthcare, some get overlooked or may be under the radar. An uncommon and often disregarded career choice in healthcare is that of a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist or a Doctorate of Nurse Anesthesia Practice. Although not many people know about these healthcare careers, they play a vital role within the healthcare team. This field is growing rapidly and the likelihood of coming into contact with a nurse anesthetist during a hospital stay is on the rise. Knowing the history, education, responsibilities, and career outlook for a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist or a Doctorate of Nurse Anesthesia Practice can aide in understanding their very specific role in the care of patients.

As a Wilmington resident of seventeen years, my choice to attend the University of North Carolina Wilmington is ‘without a shadow of a doubt’ an easy one. In eighth grade, I began to seriously decipher through colleges, and attempted to decide which one was meant for me. UNCW wasn’t initially my first choice, but as I got older, matured, did extensive research, and with my college years growing nearer, it became very evident that it was where I needed to be.

One career that I have chosen is a Pediatrician. I have chosen Pediatrician because it is a possible major. I also chose a Pediatrician because I have a strong passion towards children, passionately work with them, and want to help take care of people who get sick. The 2 IT careers that I have chosen are a Software Engineer and an IT Project Manager. I have chosen a Software Engineer because my father is a Software Engineer and I wanted to become a Software Engineer when I was in 2nd-4th Grade. I have chosen an IT project manager due to the fact it will mean holding the position of a mini CEO, interacting with many people, and directly interfering with the customers and clients.

I was always undecided regarding the career that I wanted to pursue. As I got older and looked at many choices in careers I realized that I wanted to have a career in the medical field. Being a nurse interests me because it requires the study of the human body along with other great opportunities that nurses have in this career. I want to become a nurse because I like being able to help those who are in need.
