Nursing is one of the booming careers in every Country, and the United States is no exception. When I was a child, I used to tell my parents that I would become a nurse when I grow up. At that time, I was only interested because of the uniform, that white color uniform put smiles on my face when I see the nurses wearing them. As a child, I thought people who wore the white uniform were good people, and that they were closer to God. As I grew up, I released that a number of people were also interested in becoming nurses. In my mind, I thought if everyone was chasing the same career then it must have been easier for them to have gotten through. Not until I researched to it and I realized that, for me to be able to get into the program I needed
A career trajectory is a formalized plan for a successful transition into a career path that an individual has chosen. Likewise, the goal of nursing is to improve health through the advancement of knowledge therefore, improving the safety, effectiveness, and the access for healthcare. In combining these two definitions, a career trajectory in nursing advancement is to allow for clarity of direction and expected outcomes in a career by meeting the goals to advance in the healthcare field. In order to build a successful career as an advanced practitioner an individual must consider the requirements of the position and make strategic decisions in order to facilitate progression towards this goal (Feetham & Doering, 2015).
Since I was young I knew I wanted to be in the medical field. I liked the idea of helping people, especially kids. I went from wanting to be doctor, to a pediatrician, to a neonatal nurse, and I finally settled on a nurse. I knew nurses face many challenges that I am preparing myself to overcome. Working long hours being one of them.
Nursing is an excellent career choice, where an individual acquires great gratitude while attending to others necessities. If someone is constantly trying to improve themselves and wanting to be challenged in life, “as nurses, we face tremendous challenges and often see and do things that are extraordinary” (Ulrich xix). By becoming a registered nurse the individual will make a difference. Nursing allows an individual to continuously be benefiting a fellow human being, not only with the patient but with their families as well, having the opportunity to becoming someone especial in the patient’s life. Nursing is a
The health care field is ever changing, the article The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health (2010), explains all the changes that need to happen in the health care system (Institute of Medicine, 2010). The recommendations that the Institute of Medicine has for the health care field are ones that are important for the workers as well as the patients. This report applies to my career because being in the master’s program I am furthering my education, which is one of the messages that this article has to the readers (Institute of Medicine, 2010, p. 4). Message one is also relevant to my career because it talks about nurse residency program and I have been in a program for a little over a year (Institute of Medicine, 2010, p. 5). As a nurse doing continuing education is a way of following new trends and developments in information.
There is no doubt that nursing is an ever changing field. Although nursing always has been about caring for others, at the present time, this field is more sophisticated and respected than in the past. Currently, there are standards of nursing practice and professional performance developed by the American Nurses Association (ANA) for American nurses to follow. However, there is some controversy about whether nursing is a profession or not. Also, in order to learn these standards as well as other norms, values, and behaviors of nursing, nursing students and nurses follow a lifelong process called socialization which is affected by many factors. Moreover, a way to learn more about these topics is to compare real nurses’ thoughts and experiences with what literature suggests. Therefore, after interviewing an experienced nurse and report on her demographics, I have been able to contrast her perspectives on nursing being a profession, the ANA standards of practice, and the socialization process to literature as well as reflect on my own thoughts and values.
The healthcare field is a very good place to work, and you get many benefits when you work in that field. There are many types of jobs that are out there to get, and many other fields throughout the medical field in general. In the medical field there are the CNA’s, Registered Nurses. Licensed Practical Nurse, Nurse Practitioner, Intensive Care Unit Nurse and many more.
Patients, in any healthcare setting, deserve respect and care that is centered on their unique needs. Nurses and health care are required to assist them to achieve this goal. Changing the health care system will require us to reestablish our
Whether you have been practicing for many years or are just beginning your nursing career, you can see that the face of nursing is in transition. Due to rapidly advancing technology, greater autonomy within our field and healthcare reform, many changes are ahead for our profession. These changes are seen in every arena of nursing, whether that is in the hospital, long term care, non-profit or nurse-managed health clinics and give us a peek at what the future of nursing will be like. Patient care is evolving and nurses require a higher skill set to effectively treat such a diverse population (Models, 2010). In response to this need, educational institutes are encouraged to modify and expand loan forgiveness programs and increase the number of grants awarded to nurses furthering their education. The skills that were once needed for new nurses have dramatically changed over the past few years. We must do everything in our power to ensure new nurses are prepared to enter the workforce capable of handling their immense responsibilities (Hendren, 2010). The projected nursing shortage will severely impact patients across the United States and law makers are scrambling to find a solution to the problem. Patient care delivery models are changing across the board, these changes will likely affect us all, and regardless of the area we each practice in. Nurse practitioners will soon be able to practice independent of a physician, which can only mean the role of Registered Nurse will
Did you know that “...nursing is one of the fastest growing occupation in the U.S...by 2018 registered nurses will grow faster than any other occupation through 2018” (Nursinglink). My goal is to be part of this industry and knowing that nursing will be an important occupation by my graduation year is exciting. After comparing The University of Illinois, The University of Texas at Austin and The University of Texas A&M at Corpus Christi based on my criteria of tuition, admission rate, and distance from home, The University of Texas at Corpus Christi would be the best choice in helping me pursue a career in registered nurse.
As approximately 78% of the nurses in practice in 1965 were graduates of hospital-based diploma programs, concern was expressed regarding the impact of the document on the status of these nurses. (Levinski, 2013). Therefore, in 1966, the ANA Board of Directors approved the publication of a brochure A Date With the Future which interpreted the meaning of the position paper for graduates of hospital schools of nursing. The brochure stated:
Institute of Medicine was tasked with submitting a report consisting recommendations and a blue print for the future of nursing. “The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health” was published at the time when Affordable Care Act(ACA) was signed by the President in March 2010. With this 32million more Americans will be provided with insurance in future. To accommodate the new demand while keeping a high quality health care is a challenge. The report in detail study the roles nursing can assume to meet the increasing demand for high quality, effective and safe health care services. This report also talk about how the nursing profession could exploit these opportunities and
My desire to pursue a career in adult nursing is because I believe this to be one the most fulfilling and worthwhile careers to choose. While I understand that nursing is such a diverse and challenging career, being able to help people in their moment of need would make all these challenges worthwhile. Nursing is an exciting career path with a wide range of opportunities, it is hugely diverse and provides people with a chance to specialise in certain areas. I hope to make the most of these opportunities when studying for my degree, and I am confident that I will find a career path that is suited for me. I completed a Psychology degree in 2016, and this has given me a greater understanding of people and the way in which they think, feel and behave.
The field of nursing is growing and changing rapidly, but this isn’t the first time in history that nursing has undergone radical transformations. In ancient times, the sick was usually cared for in temples and houses of worship. In the early Christian era, nursing duties were undertaken by certain women in the church, their services being extended to patients in their homes. Florence Nightingale, the well-educated daughter of wealthy British parents, defied social conventions, and the wishes of her parents, and decided to become a nurse. During Britain’s Crimean War, Nightingale sought to improve the mortality rate for soldiers. Later, Clara Barton helped found the Red Cross and Agnes Jones helped establish nursing schools in the
Nursing is a very complex career that at many times requires one to be a leader. Nurses can be leaders in formal roles and also on the unit during any given shift. Nursing is a career that truly tests the character and attributes of those who choose to enter this career. Leadership in nursing is vital in creating a successful environment for patients. Therefore, it is vital that as new nurses start out his or her careers that they learn from great leaders who are already in the profession. There are several great leaders working in the field who have a plethora of
