Nursing has not always been the type of career that it is today. Florence Nightingale made a huge impact on nursing. Louise Selanders wrote an article explaining Nightingale’s life, all the accomplishments she made, and all the ways she impacted modern nursing. In the article, she explains the history of how nursing became such a big deal. War, especially the Crimean War, is what really moved the career to a whole other level. Florence Nightingale was chosen to lead a bunch of nurses in the military’s medical establishments. According to Selanders when Nightingale arrived the conditions were “filthy, and inadequate” but once Florence arrived she turned it all around, she taught all of the nurses how to properly care for the patients and completely turned the conditions around. Florence greatly increased the survival rate of the war soldiers because of her immense knowledge on the subject. So, after the war she began writing textbooks and opened the very first nursing school. Florence began the revolution of nursing. Making it a much more valued and important career. Over the years new discoveries, and advancements in science and technology have greatly changed the nursing profession. Making it possible for many lives to be saved.

I realized I wanted to be a nurse after I had my 2nd ACL surgery, my senior year of high school. I had to stay in the hospital 3 days in order to recover, and I was very lucky to have such a wonderful and caring nurse. She made me feel as if I was her only patient. I will never forget how well I was taken care of and how comfortable she made me feel. I was young and scared, but she was reassuring, because she made me feel as if I had my own mother taking care of me. She was the reason I wanted to become a nurse, because I wanted to make others feel the way she made me feel. My personal definition of nursing is encompassed within that one nurse. A nurse should be loving, compassionate, dependable, competent, empathic, responsible,

What comes to the mind when we think of nurses - Someone who takes care of sick people. Nursing was introduced by Florence Nightangle in the mid of 1800’s and she took an opportunity to train women to care of wounded and sick army during the war. Back then nurses were trained to perform all the housekeeping skills. In 1900’s, there was no set of formal classes for nursing student as compared to today’s higher education. They were assigned to work for 10-12 hours without pay under the supervision of a physician. There is a huge difference between today’s and 1900’s nursing education. Nurses are more trained and skilled in their profession and today’s nursing considered to be more professional than 1900’s nursing.
The field of nursing is growing and changing rapidly, but this isn’t the first time in history that nursing has undergone radical transformations. In ancient times, the sick was usually cared for in temples and houses of worship. In the early Christian era, nursing duties were undertaken by certain women in the church, their services being extended to patients in their homes. Florence Nightingale, the well-educated daughter of wealthy British parents, defied social conventions, and the wishes of her parents, and decided to become a nurse. During Britain’s Crimean War, Nightingale sought to improve the mortality rate for soldiers. Later, Clara Barton helped found the Red Cross and Agnes Jones helped establish nursing schools in the
The purpose of this essay is to depict the personal philosophy of nursing and any future aspirations I have acquired in my first semester of nursing school. Before I can create my own philosophy of nursing, I must first understand and define what philosophy is and how it relates to nursing. According to the Oxford Dictionary, philosophy is “the study of the fundamental nature of knowledge, reality, and existence, especially when considered as an academic discipline” (Oxford University, 2010). This paper will describe my personal philosophy of nursing and reflect on my futures educational and career goals
Throughout history, society has considered women to be the natural caregivers of children, family, and community. Women were naturally thought of as nurses because the act was said to be an extension of their role in the home. They were called in to homes to help deliver babies or as wet nurses to breastfeed. In the 1800’s, women began taking care of soldiers. It was then that Florence Nightingale cared for soldiers in the Crimean War. During this time she revolutionized the role by setting standards of cleanliness and reducing infection. The legacy of nursing continues to be enriched by those who continue to follow the example of nursing pioneers. They refuse to be bound by others’ views
Nursing is considered to be one of the most respected professions today. The theory of nursing has existed for centuries, as family members cared for sick loved ones. However, it was not until the 19th century that nursing as a profession began to develop. It was during this time that Florence Nightingale made her significant contributions to nursing. Among other things, Nightingale helped society recognize nursing as a respectable occupation, established modern nursing education, and helped institute standards of nursing care (Taylor 7). Nursing is a very broad discipline, and nurses serve many different roles—caregiver, teacher, advocate, communicator, counselor, and many more. The concept of nursing has been around for a very long time. Nurturing and caring is a part of human nature. Cultures throughout history have had people that cared for the sick but it wasn’t really until after Florence Nightingale’s experiences in the Crimean War that nursing really began to develop as a profession. In 1860 she established the Nightingale Training School for Nurses at St. Thomas’ Hospital in London. This was a very important milestone because was the first organized training program for nurse. Nightingale also developed the Nightingale pledge which is a variation of the Hippocratic Oath for nurses (Donahue, 2011).
There are over 3.1 registered nurses worldwide making nursing the most employed healthcare job in the world (Nursing Fact Sheet, 2011). Starting as early as 300 A.D, nurses have held the enormous responsibility to care for the ill and wounded (The History of Nursing, 2016). Nursing has gone through significant changes since this time, evolving from an assistant role solely for women to an independent profession for direct patient care with numerous specialties and outlets. This change could not have occurred without the significant influence of one woman: Florence Nightingale. Accelerated by her Christian faith, Florence Nightingale revolutionized the realm of nursing by introducing and improving nursing standards and beginning the very first secular nursing school; this influence established Nightingale as an advocate for women’s rights, specifically in the workplace, and an inspiration to future nurses everywhere, including myself.
Nursing is universal in the sense that nurses can be found almost in all countries around the world (Henderson, 1978). They are in the hospitals, in school clinics, in the community centres, residential homes and even play major roles in some of the popular soap operas in television. There are even television shows that mainly revolve around nurses and which chronicles what they do at work - both the positive and the negative. It is one of the most visible and easily identifiable occupations as compared for example to other occupations such as engineers, managers or even pharmacists, medical technologists and other health related occupations. This is partly because of what nurses do and most especially how nurses look - with some still
