When working in the health care setting, I believe that it is the responsibility of everyone to dress in a manner that conveys confidence and professionalism to the patients. Today, when it comes to appropriate attire and policies on dress and appearance, organizations now must consider body modifications (piercings and tattoos), jewelry with religious symbols, and styles of cultural dress. As a nurse in my hospital, we wear seal blue scrubs that differentiate us from the other employees. In my profession, it is important to come to work with a clean, neat, and unwrinkled scrubs or uniforms. We only use white or black color type of shoes. In my field, it is professionalism for Nurses and PCA’s to come to work prepared, neat, and well groomed. Professionalism means placing our patients’ needs and satisfaction a priority. It is important for nurses to communicate effectively to my colleagues, and patients that convey respect and trust. Likewise, based on my experience it is important part of Professionalism to make my expertise my specialty. Nurses must remain competent to keep o ur knowledge up to date to become an expert in the skills necessary to care for our patients. It is professionalism to be committed and keep a smile on your face and the right attitude in your heart everyday even when things are not going your way. One of the good qualities I possess is my caring attitude. I do not think I would have lasted in my profession if I am not caring and compassionate to my patients. I make sure that I am competent with my skills, so that I can get my job done without any problems. I also exhibit qualities such as honesty and integrity. As mentioned by (Smith, n.d.), professionals will always do the right thing, even when it means taking the harder path. In my nursing profession, patients look up to me, because I am the patient advocate. So I must remain honest, so I do not break my patient’s trust. As a nurse, we were taught to have an effective communication skill by using open-ended question and empathy to my patients. I make sure that I watch my tone and stay polite, although sometimes it is hard to control it when my patients and their family are inappropriate and ungrateful. I make sure that I go to work prepared, neat, and well -groomed to convey a professional image. Lastly, accountability is important in every professional career to maintain my credibility.
