1 When you’re young you’re taught that you can be anything you want to be when you grow up. Knowing that you have such a wide variety to choose from you probably changed what you wanted to be daily. I wasn’t that way. When I was six I decided that I wanted to be a nurse. Nursing is a profession for anyone, which is one thing that I believe, sets it apart from others. I set this goal for myself at a pretty young age and I am so excited to be on my way to achieving it. Nursing is for anyone no matter who you are. To become a nurse you have to complete a certain curriculum. 5 That would be first completing high school and getting your diploma or attaining your GED. 8 Some nurses will work every day of a work week on a regular eight hour work shift. Most hospital nurses work three to four days a week on twelve hour shifts. Some nurses who are even crazier than that and work a Baylor Shift. A Baylor Shift is where a nurse or whomever work two sixteen hour shifts in two days, usually on the weekend, and then gets the rest of the week off. People who work this shift also get paid as if they were working the three to four day work week. Having schedules like this allows for days off when you really need them. This makes it easier to take vacations and not worry about missing a ton of work or taking off for a week at a time. You have a crazy work schedule so most nurses try to spend time with their families or maybe even by themselves. Your job will affect your family in all kinds of ways. 13 How you and your family choose to respond is what will make or break it. You should choose to stay positive about your job unless it directly interferes with you family. Family is first over everything; at least it is for me. Your job may also affect your health. 9 Working with or around sick people could get you sick as well. Especially during flu season or Ebola decides to break out again. It could also mess with your mental health, depending on where you work. If you stay positive on the job nothing can get you down. The job is also physically demanding. You may have to help lift a patient from a wheelchair to a bed or vice versa. It isn’t always so easy. Some people suggest working out so it isn’t so
