In the play Macbeth, ambition, strength, and insanity play major roles in how the characters Macbeth and Lady Macbeth behave and react. Both Macbeth and Lady Macbeth present all 3 of these behaviors at one time or another during the play. However, there behaviors progress in very different ways. While Macbeth gets stronger and more ambitious, Lady Macbeth does the opposite. She starts out strong and ambitious, but becomes weaker and more reserved.

The Witches also reveal “Thou shalt get kings, though thou be none” (1.3.67) to Banquo. This knowledge leads Macbeth to send Murderers to kill Banquo and his son. This is more evidence to show that the words of the witches construct the plays events.

Miki is also told the same prophecy for his children that Banquo is told for his. Because of this, Macbeth is now forced to think of the possibility of being king. On his way to meet the king, Macbeth is made Thane of Cawdor, fulfilling the first part of the witches’ prophecy. Macbeth cannot help but wonder about the prophecy told to him by the witches. Washizu wonders about the same possibilities after becoming lord of the North Castle. Both characters confide in their wives who only help to spur on their ambition. Though both deny their ambitions for the throne, Washizu seems to have more conviction in his loyalty for the king. Both wives implore their husbands to kill the king is visiting at their respective castles. At first this creates a moral dilemma for our tragic heroes, but ultimately ambition wins out as each one kills their king to rise to the throne.
