Opinionated Obesity Obesity in America is a constant issue that seems to be on the rise and it is has been rising at an epidemic rate among the people of America. When you think of health you don’t necessarily thing of bellies and thighs rubbing together but why not? Is there a possibility of being a healthy and obese person? Who set the standard for what is too much and for what isn’t? And what makes this so wrong? I have done extensive amounts of research on the topic and I am here to question why should the size of a person be the reason we shake their head at them? When talking to a person who has been dealing with obesity all of his life I was stunned by what I heard from him. The person I interviewed was Michael Jean-Baskin. Michael has been one of my lifelong friends since middle school. We attended Crystal Lake Middle which is a few miles away from my cozy south Florida home. Believe me I am a guy and we all have our share of size jokes for one another which was guys just being guys but let anyone else say anything about Michael and we had a serious problem with it. In this interview Michael talked to me about his life and the different times he felt uncomfortable in his own skin. But believe it or not we also talked about his happiness and him finding comfort and confidence in his size. I have constantly lived a life around people who are considered bigger than they are supposed to be. I was raised by my grandma and even she has been diagnosed with obesity. This diagnosis is constantly climbing. Just because someone weighs more than the average is shouldn’t make them obese. Obesity is in relation to unhealthy. Although my grandma was diagnosed as obese she’s never had any problems with her health based on her weight. She lives her life just as any normal woman her age. Obesity is a disease meaning it affects the well being of a person. The people that I grew up and live around that are considered obese have nothing wrong with them.
