Observation Of A College Education

Many people have an easy road to get a higher education, many don’t because we all come from different culture, society, and social class. Also, the general public has their own complications in their life. Unfortunately, money is the biggest problem that almost all people have to face and during their college life, it is hard for students to manage money for tuition fees, bills, and for the food and shelter. “Community College Students Face a Very Long Road to Graduation” is an article written by Ginia Bellafante and published by The New York Time on October 3, 2014. In the article, Bellafante has written about the LaGurdia Community College student, Vladimir de Jesus academic life and also talks about why Community Colleges have low graduation rate.

College is becoming increasingly expensive, ranging from 60,000 dollars to around 10,000 dollars. In the United states, 75% of people feel that “college is too expensive”(Source F). But to what extent should money rule an individual's life? The same survey also reported that 86% of people feel as though “college has been a good investment for them personally.” (Source F) This statistic proves that money should not control the life of an individual because although college is expensive a vast majority of people enjoy it. A college education not only prepares someone for a career in the future, but allows academic experimentation, higher pay as an adult and teaches students skills that young adults with only a high school degree may lack.

I will discuss what the value of a college education means to me. A higher education will give me many physical benefits such as economic stability, a better quality of life for my family, more career choices, better job security, set a good example for my children at the same time, a college education will also give me many intangible benefits such as boosting my self-confidence, helping me to learn specialized knowledge, thinking critically, bringing me in contact with different people, learning better communication skill and being part of a team. ​Did you know that in the US, only 16% of household include a married couple raising their children (​Krogstad). Alfred Lubrano in his work “The Shock of Education: How College Corrupts”, talks about the changes he experienced in college and how it affected his relationship with his parents (531-537). Lubrano claims that the enrichment of education expands the distance between the college students and their parents (532). I disagree with his point and suggest that it is not the college education that creates the distance, and in some cases the aloofness is caused before reaching the college age. Several factors contribute to dissonance in parent-child relationship.

As you graduate high school you begin to think about whether to go to college or not. A huge number of people believe that college isn’t worth your time or your money. In my opinion, education after high school is absolutely worth your time and money. There are many reasons why you should go to college. Some reasons are, you can earn money and another is that you have a greater chance of getting a good and decent job. In this essay I will discuss the value of college and why it is important.

College is a place where most go to further their education. A high school diploma will not get students by in life anymore. While college is said to be considered the “best time of your life”, it has many downfalls, the price. This leads to a high number of student debt and student loans. It is estimated that the average outstanding student loan balance per debtor is $30,000. A college education was not always this expensive however. Loans were originally only offered to Harvard alumni in the 1840’s. It was not until the twentieth century that the problems of student loans arose. In 1944 the GI Bill was introduced which fulfilled the need for more affordable education. It subsidized or completely covered the cost of college education for nearly half of WW2 veterans. By the 1990’s student loan debt began to change, and not for the better. In 1993, the average debt of a bachelor’s degree was approximately $9,000. So, when the question of a free college education is proposed many jump and say yes but looking at it through a rational lens, it would not be the best decision.

Our society revolves around the intelligent and prestigious; not because they make more money or demand respect due to their title, but because the amount of knowledge and experience they portray to the community does not only benefit their own livelihood, but ours as well. To reach these levels of prominence, being a college graduate will increase your chances of doing so. Although college expenses might seem overwhelming, it is a smart investment that will lead to more opportunities, such as higher paying jobs, rewarding intellectual aspects, and above all provides a consistent and steady income.

Some of the most incredible advancements the human race have made have been in the past century. We have sent men to the moon, improved communication systems, and made the largest technological advancements since the invention of the wheel. In 1946, the first official computer, named ENIAC, was made. It weighed 100,000 pounds, and all it was used for were various calculations. That was only 69 years ago, but now computers can be found everywhere in developed nations. In less than one decade, we have progressed from a 100,000 pound computer to handheld computers that weigh less a pound and can be used for numerous different tasks. It is crazy to think that the simple luxuries that our generation have become accustom to were not normal for our parents or grandparents. An increase in education is the reason we have been able to progress in such an accelerated way. The value of a college education lies in its ability to allow individuals to grow academically, by expanding their knowledge of various subjects, and socially, by being exposed to many different characters and beliefs. These skills ensure that they will have a better future because they will be advancing faster than those who chose other paths. A four year college education, although not for everyone, can push young adults in the right direction.

Located in the 14th Edition of The Norton Reader, an article written by Carolina Bird titled “College is a Waste of Time and Money” can be found. In the article Bird argues that though college may be beneficial for a small percentage of students, but for the majority it is a waste of time and money. The benefits of a college degree can rely on many contributing factors, but for some college is simply a waste of time and money. Though most of the sources used in Bird's article are over four decades old, the argument today is still very strong. One example includes the idea that most students believe that college is the best thing for them to do for their future, and therefore they enroll, only to realize they are not happy and drop out. For other students their dream may have always been set on a specific career, putting college into the plan, but following graduation the job market for their degree is scarce. Within these two examples one would find support for the argument that college is a waste of time and money.

As we grow up, everyone asks us what we want to be when we grow up. Once we get a little older, they ask where we want to go to college. They ask every question imaginable, except how we are going handle the financial responsibility. The decision to attend college quite often results in major student debt. This debt often influences a person’s decisions on where to attend college or if they are able to attend college.

College has been a place where people can get knowledge. Attending college is a better way to be successful persons and get many opportunities in the future. Unless great knowledge harder to find a good job. Every student has a different reason to study in college, where they can learn their interested subject. It will help them to achieve a degree in their own field. Another benefit going college is understanding of different cultures and religions around the world. However, there are many drawbacks. Many people who spend many years attending college instead doing jobs they cannot earn enough money. Some student learns bad habits of their friends. Two reasons going to college are a better career and greater knowledge; two effects of going college are making friends and debt.

As a student just out of high school, due for at least four more years of higher-education, the problems in education addressed during Chapter 8 are especially pertinent to my own life. However, that’s not to say that the problems in the education system aren’t important on a society-wide level as the quality of education is a major indicator for a society’s level of development and by extension the knowledge and to a degree the values of its citizens. The rhetorical question the textbook asks is a good summary of the flaws of the education system, “education is often claimed as a panacea – the cure-all for poverty and prejudice, drugs and violence, war and hatred, and the like. Many of these people feel like they are “in between” because the feeling of being fully adult takes time to develop; the feeling doesn’t happen just because they got married or they graduated, you’re in between being a teenager and an adult. According to one study, the person needs to accept responsibility for them self, make independent decisions, and become financially independent; other studies have shown similar criteria for development with the addition of finishing school, for the person to feel like they are fully an adult.

One of the many benefits to higher education include cultural experiences. This is learned by interacting with students from other nations. International students are more readily available in the college atmosphere.

The condition of Higher Education in South Asia is one of diverse complications.
