Lyndon B. Johnson once said, “Peace is a journey of a thousand miles and it must be taken one step at a time”. In the Odyssey the main character Odysseus sets out on a journey that leads him to face many obstacles. He is forced to resist temptation , pridefulness, and being away from his family. Each one of this obstacles had a tremendous affect on him and how he is portrayed as a character. In the Odyssey, Homer uses Odysseus’s journey to show how one’s journey can affect them as a person. One way that Odysseus journey affected him was by resisting temptation. As Homer states, “The great Odysseus, who sat apart, as a thousands times before, and racked his own heart groaning, with eyes wet scanning the bare horizon of the sea”. (Homer 1208).

However, this purification process and Odysseus' chances of returning home are compromised by his flaws and those of his crew, while enhanced by the many virtues and qualities he possesses. This voyage symbolizes man's road to salvation hoping to obtain the God forgiveness
The Odyssey, an epic narrative by Homer, Illustrates the countless hardships and lessons one must undergo and learn throughout the journey of life. This journey was shown by following the story of a Greek man named Odysseus. The goal of life, according to Homer, was to reach self-actualization and become infallible in each of the seven virtues (hospitality, obedience, loyalty, courage, respect, empathy, and humility). Odysseus, once the king of Ithaca, was a great and brilliant man who was in fact superior over many people in regards to life’s virtues. He did, however, succumb to being arrogant.
In the epic poem, the Odyssey, by Homer Odysseus experiences many amazing events before arriving at home in Ithaka. I believe that the experiences that he has had on his long journey and his personality will not allow Odysseus to be at peace in his homeland. Odysseus has been away from home for about twenty years. He has experienced many trials and adventures on his prolonged journey home. I believe that Odysseus will not be at peace in his homeland because he has been a warrior since an early age, he is not patient, and most importantly, he has a very curious mind.
Odysseus is the main character in an epic poem called the Odyssey. In the poem Odysseus has had some bad luck getting home, with some of the gods helping him and some hindering him; his journey towards home is a constant struggle. In this poem we see a man being broke and rebuilt, through constant irony his faith was damaged and without the help of Athena he probably would have given up on his journey. Through his hard work and wise spirit he finally does achieve his goal.
In the Odyssey, a classic epic by Homer, the war hero Odysseus successfully returns home after twenty years at sea. Instead of having Odysseus directly communicate to his family and loyal servants that he is alive and well, the author writes a sequence of signposts that signal a revelation. Every character undergoes the same signposts and reaction.

Odysseus learned to resist temptation. The first temptation Odysseus was tempted with was the lotus plant, from the lotus eaters. Eating the plant would not have harmed them in anyway, it would have just made them want to stay there, but him and his crew made the decision to resist eating it. If they had eaten the plant, they would have never gotten home. Another temptation they had to encounter was the Sirens. The Sirens would tempt them with their music. The Sirens were half bird half humans and they were very dangerous. The biggest temptation that Odysseus had to deal with was Calypso. She was a goddess that was madly in love with Odysseus. She wanted to have Odysseus as her husband, but Odysseus just wanted to get back home to his family. If he had not resisted temptation, he would have been on the island of the Lotus Eaters, dead, or without his true wife.
The Odyssey by Homer is an epic telling of the story of great Odysseus. It is filled with many mythical situations that readers can relate to in their own ways. For example, when Odysseus encounters Scylla and Charybdis, readers may interpret it as a symbol of a dilemma. Obviously, it will never be as serious, but it helps the reader connect with the story. The Odyssey covers the motifs of temptation, dilemmas, and fear as main symbols which are shown throughout the story.
In Homer’s The Odyssey, Odysseus endures an arduous voyage filled with countless dangers. Although he is praised by comrades and countrymen as a wise, heroic king, Odysseus does not actually live up to his name as he begins this trip back to Ithaka. Through his journey though, Odysseus corrects his reckless, undisciplined, and arrogant actions, learning responsibility, restraint, and humility in the process.
Odysseus left Calypso’s Island and began his journey back home. His odyssey might be described as one’s own life struggles. There are ups and downs to every situation, and through reading The Odyssey, readers can connect parallels between Odysseus’ experiences and lessons learned in their own life. Human weaknesses can still prevail through even the strongest men you may think of; examples of this are shown in this epic. Even though there is a large gap in space between Odysseus’ travels and the present, human nature and weakness still share the same obstacles.
