Throughout my high school career, I chose to challenge myself in the classroom. Rather than taking the basic route to earning a high school diploma, I chose to seek an even high honor of obtaining the honor's diploma. Throughout my years, I was told by various people that the honor's diploma was unnecessary, colleges won't care about it, and that it's just for bragging rights. Although some of these statements may be true, I didn't let the negativity get in the way of my goal. I was set on working towards and honor's diploma and no one was going to stop me.
Obtaining the honor's diploma wasn't as easy as I first thought it would be. By choosing this route, it led me to take higher level courses offered at Zanesville high school along
The Honors Program student embodies the virtues of independence, academic talent, intellectual curiosity, and persistence. In a brief essay, of approximately 500 words, please tell us how your reasons for admission to the Honors Program as well as your long and short terms academic goals speak to these four virtues. In doing so, you might consider the following questions:
The honor society awards students who show the qualities scholarship, leadership, and character and offer their service to the community. From this opportunity, I learned that grades are not the only thing that make a person, it is how a person presents himself or herself as a member of the community and what they do in their community. I have also learned that little deeds go a long way. Giving
From the start of high school, I have driven myself to be successful. Not only to make my parents proud and get recognition from colleges, but also as goal for myself. During freshman year I was awarded the Golden Hark Award for demonstrating positive leadership skills. Additionally, I have gotten the highest honor roll every semester of high school, and currently have a 4.021 cumulative GPA. Throughout my high school years
I am a journalism major with a focus in public relations and a minor in marketing therefore I believe the Honors college will enhance my academic experience at Georgia State by allowing me to develop my people skills as well as my personal professional development. The honors college programs do not only provide rigorous academic programs for strong individuals to constantly feel challenged but it also provides guidance to develop individual professionalism ,and I believe both would allow me to grow as a journalism major. In addition, I know the amazing staff that the honors college provides would help me maintain my focus and personal development all four years of my undergraduate studies.
Being an all A’s honor student is something that was important to me before I even started high school. When I found out how important academics were going to be to get into college in junior high I began to earn all A’s in
Since I’m black, it is as if I have unknowingly signed a contract that restricts me from being intelligent. I must automatically talk “ghetto” and be and only be interested in sports. Consequently, when I get good grades, I’m called a “try-hard” and when I speak properly, I’m asked, “why I talk so white”. This brings me back to my proudest achievement, being accepted into the National Honor Society. The National Honor Society at my school is competitive because many students seek admission. It is looked as one of those clubs that colleges love on your application; therefore teachers are very selective when it comes to accepting students. Students must have at least a 3.5 GPA, 80 community service hours, leadership roles, and 2 teacher recommendations to even be considered. Being accepted into the National Honor Society served as a slap in the face to the absurd stereotypes that my peers possess. I showed them you can be a black student and still be intelligent or a white student and exceed in athletics. You don’t have to adhere to the stereotypes that others have about your race. Just be
My grades are not accurate predictors of my potential success in the Honors College. During my freshman year, I had no cares academically. I was just in school to waste time, and I never thought about the future. That next summer, I got a job just so I could have something to do. My boss became one of the biggest influences in my life. I instantly decided I wanted to be a manager like him. I set my eyes on my goal and have been working studiously to make the most out of my life. My test scores are somewhat accurate predictors of my success - my ACT scores were satisfactory, but I am not a very fast tester. All three times I have taken it so far, I have not had enough time to finish my reading portions or to revise my essays. My class ranking,
Since its establishing, the University of Kansas has exemplified the goals and determination of the abolitionists who settled on the bend of the Kaw River in August 1854. Their first objective was to guarantee that the new Kansas Territory entered the union as a free state. Another was to set up a college.
Before my Honors Mindset class I had never heard of many of the terms we are discussing. I had no knowledge of all these different ideas that every student should be aware of. Learning about these concepts made me think about the way i have learned and currently learn. I would love to be able to say that being in the honors program I already exhibit all of the qualities necessary to be truly successful in school and ultimately in life. Saying this would be a lie. I still have a long way to go in order to be successful in my endeavors. While thinking back on my career as a student I realized how guilty I was of not exhibiting the many qualities we have learned about. Along the way there have been times where I utilized the habitudes and times
My most important scholastic honor was to be placed on the Dean’s Honor Roll during the Fall Quarter of my junior year of college. It signified renewal in my college career and was directly resulted from my improved living situation. My grades initially suffered during the first two years of college due to my home responsibilities of raising my sister, helping build the family business, and getting married. I also had to deal with my immigration issues and find the means to afford college. I confronted my conflicts head on by taking the initiative and adapting to solve them. By junior year, I had solved my immigration issues and funded my education from the family business that I helped manage and build. This allowed me to dedicate more time
One of the biggest myths in my high school was that the people in the top ten rank were the smartest students in the city. That because we were considered to be the best school in the city(another issue in and of itself), they were the ones that were going to be accepted into the high ranking universities and selective honors programs. But what most of my classmates (and myself at first) failed to see, was that the truth was actually very different. When one took a step back and actually looked at the credentials and scores of the people in the top ten rank when compared to the rest of the class, it became exceedingly obvious that the numbers don’t support the notion that they are the “elite” scholars of the school. Many of the “elite” were there for one reason only, they knew how to play the system by picking the easiest teachers for each subject. Now of course there were a couple of students that were indeed hard workers and very intelligent, our valedictorian is a great example of that. But the majority of them were anything but. Most of their test scores (AP, SAT, ACT, etc.), awards, and community service/extracurricular activities were noticeably less than the students who were deemed less “successful” than them. Now when I first started there I thought that maybe if I tried to do what they did, I would have a higher chance of getting into a great university, but I started to notice several little things about the previous classes and their top ten’s experience in
Throughout high school, I challenged myself by taking multiple AP and Honors courses each year. While it was gratifying to succeed in the higher-level classes, some of the courses did not end up being a great fit for me, but I always pushed through until the end of the year and strived to complete the course with grace. The ups and downs in each class taught me my strengths and weaknesses as a student – for example, fast paced Math and Science courses aren’t my forte, but I love to be involved in thought provoking debates during English class. The Renée Crown Honors Program interests me because it emphasizes an intellectually stimulating and supportive community.
Having a college degree is important these days. It has several advantages such as getting a better education and having more opportunities to get a job. It also makes me independent by being responsible of my life. Going to college would give me the opportunity to learn more about time management skills. Having a part time job, for instance, would allow me to develop my time management skills, and I would be able to study and work at the same time. My future goals are to be a scientist and successful in my life. Therefore, I decided to go to college and started to look up for universities that would help me to achieve my future goals. Fortunately, I heard about the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) from one of my relatives, who
I also received a couple of honor certificates in different subjects and this made me think to myself, “maybe I’m not so bad after all” It was such a big deal to me, because some of my friends and teachers had told me that they didn’t really see any potential in me, and always compared me to my siblings. I proved them all wrong, and also made myself proud.
Throughout my high school career I have been able to accomplish several of my personal goals. One of the goals that I accomplished was being on the honor roll every nine weeks throughout my four years of high school. With maintaining a spot on the honor roll, it has earned me a grade point average of a 3.214 out of a 4.0 scale. Another goal that I accomplished for myself was, being able to participate in school actives such as the varsity scholastic bowl team and the Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America. This was an accomplishment for me because while I was participating in these organizations, I was also able to give back to my community and the people in it. The last accomplishment that I have achieved throughout my high school career, was being able to gain acceptance into the college of my dreams, that I will be attending in the fall of 2016.
