Odysseus spent many years travelling throughout the Greek civilization. He has faced many unrealistic creatures that today, would scare everything out of us, and even took a twenty year trip to make it back home to his family. He has saw giant creatures with one eye, flying women, and even more that we would not believe. Odysseus was a person full of different characters, being his own little book. He appeared as a strong, brave man, full of wits and tricks. Homer wrote The Odyssey between about 750 and 650 B.C, which is many years after the great lord of Ithaca lived. That most likely means that the poems stories had been passed down between each people in the Greek culture, which gives no proof that Odysseus actually lived, but that is not going to stop us from reading the epic poem. The Odyssey itself is an Archetype because Odysseus and his men faced many obstacles and courses on their way home to Ithaca that are not humanly possible. Throughout this essay, I am going to be talking about three important archetypes, Heroic, Villain/Monster, and a Trickster.
The first thing I am going to talk about is the Heroic Archetype. When Odysseus put wax over his men’s ears to protect them from being brainwashed to death, he showed a brave act. He risked himself by being tied to a pole and being unfairly punished by The Sirens. “I carried away along the line and layed it thick upon their ears. (Homer, 582) I think Odysseus was smart to do what he
In my eyes a hero is a person who shows courage, is humble, does not give up, and is someone everybody can relate to. The protagonist in “The Odyssey” by Homer, Odysseus is a hero because although he is emotional throughout the book and lets his emotions take over his actions, he displays immense courage and perseveres through his journey and hardships.
From the Odyssey, there’s a character named Odysseus, who is a very complex character. He is proud, wise, and extremely brave. Within the Odyssey, Odysseus is a man with a large ego, he even taunted someone who nearly killed him. Even though his pride can be fatal, he’s intelligent and can get out of any situation. Lastly, Odysseus’ is fearless, even when he was placed in life or death situations, he wasn’t never cowardly.
Not all heros come in movies or little kid books. Some heros come from thousands of
The epic, The Odyssey, centers around Odysseus, whose disposition can be controversial. Like all heroes, Odysseus displays both positive and negative characteristics, which determine whether he is a admirable figure or not. In my opinion, the parts of his character that are commendable outweigh his lesser qualities, making him an honorable role in the poem. Odysseus’s three main favorable attributes are his cleverness, his determination, and his leadership.
The Odyssey by Homer, is a epic based off the actions, travels, adventures, and heroic episodes of a greek by the name of Odysseus. Throughout the story, Odysseus’ travels take him to new places on new adventures with no insight on what could happen next. Odysseus refers to himself, and is referred to a number of times, as a hero. Throughout the time of book 9 to book 12, there are many scenes throughout the story that portray the qualities Odysseus possesses that lead him to be given the heroic title. On the contrary, there are numerous occasions where Odysseus does things that might not be expected of someone seen as heroic. One of the first things that stood out to me starting in book 9, was Odysseus’ pride for his native land and where he comes from. Here, Odysseus states, “Nothing is sweeter than your own country” (Book 9, Line 37). This quotes shows how Odysseus is prideful of his home, Ithaca, and believes it to be the “sweetest sight” (Book 9, Line 31). Another scene that represents Odysseus’ heroic qualities is when Odysseus and his crew were being held by the cyclops, Polyphemus, and he comes up with an escape plan. During this, Odysseus states, “And I bade my comrades cast lots among them, which of them should have the hardihood with me to lift the stake and grind it into his eye when sweetsleep should come upon him.” (Book 9, Lines 328-329). To me, this portrays Odysseus as a quick thinker and a problem solver. In this situation, the problem was that him and
Throughout the Odyssey, Odysseus experiences many ups and downs throughout his journey home. He is throw into peril and there often seems to be no hope for his return home. While he remains victorious in the end, returning to his wife, son, and father, the poem itself is filled with many darker moments filled with doubt and sadness. Odysseus is the hero of the Odyssey, and in order to exist as a hero he must be relatable. His story cannot be one entirely of triumph, it must include a more human perspective. Triumph cannot come without strife, and heroism cannot come without tribulation. Athena and Odysseus’ experiences as divine and human, respectively, and define whether or not they are heroes. By comparing Odysseus to Athena, it is apparent that what makes Odysseus a hero before anything else is his humanity.
He has loyalty, bravery, and courage. In The Odyssey, Odysseus is very loyal toward his men and will protect or rescue them if necessary. He’s brave and courageous when it comes to fighting and won’t hesitate to act. He’s also very clever. For example, Odysseus outwitted the Cyclops, Polyphemus, by giving a false name to disguise his identity. Amid all these qualities, there are still kinks in Odysseus’s character. His pride becomes evident after his confrontation with the Cyclops, where, after a narrow escape, he wished to bother Polyphemus again. His men had to plead to him, saying, “Godsake, Captain! Why bait the beast again? Let him alone!” Odysseus also struggles with selfish actions. For example, he feasts with Circe instead of rescuing his men first. The temptations got the better of him and in turn led him down the wrong
The Odyssey is full of blood and excitement. It also has drama and love. This book is about a guy, named odysseus, who travels a long journey back home to be with the love of his life and see his son for the first time after 20 years. The odyssey is also full of archetypes. Archetypes are: characters, actions, or situation that is a pattern of human life. Three of the main archetypes in this story that I found most interesting were the heroic, father figure, and the monster archetypes.
Even if someone goes through rough times, they are always more motivated to do what is best,in the end. In “ The Odyssey “ by Homer. Odysseus, who is the king of Ithaca and has heroic powers, is homesick and wants to see his family after 20 years but he is faced with many obstacles. “ The Odyssey “follows the hero’s journey archetype because odysseus is charged with a quest, he travels to a supernatural world and normal people are not allowed in and he resurrected to the people of Ithaca.
Heroes are everywhere, no matter how small their heroic actions may be. However, what is a hero? A hero is someone who helps others without regard to themselves. A person like Atticus Finch from To Kill a Mockingbird, who put Tom Robinson in front of his own reputation, and was called a “black lover” in the racist community for doing the right thing. In Homer’s The Odyssey, Odysseus has done this more than once on his journey home, however he also has been selfish. Odysseus is a man who has been both heroic, like when he rescued his men from Circe, but he has also done unheroic actions, like when he didn’t tell his men about the dangerous bag of wind.
Our teacher referred to Odysseus as an archetype, an ideal example of manhood. So, if manhood is the state or period of being a man. What determines the difference between a man and a child? Is it mere age, or is it more? Who’s to say that Odysseus was even a hero, let alone someone who should be considered an archetype?
Throughout books one through twelve in Homer’s book, the Odyssey, characters face challenges that must be solved. Just like in highschool, freshman face many problems that they must solve to succeed. Three ways in which the challenges Telemachus meet in establishing his identity are similar to the challenges students entering Fordham prep as a freshman meet in establishing their identity are that in both situations the student and Telemachus had to become a leader, more confident in themselves, and take on responsibilities. Because of Odysseus’s absence, Telemachus had to take on the challenge of ruling his kingdom. Through these challenges, he became the leader by calling his own assembly and enforcing the law on the suitors. Freshman also must become the leader in their life and not rely on others for success. Telemachus had to also take on the responsibilities of a ruler and protecting
“Human Beings, we have dark sides; we have dark issues in our lives. To progress anywhere in life, you have to face your demons” (Noble). In The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus is returning from a ten year war fought in Troy. To return to his home in Ithaca, Odysseus, must conquer the many challenges he and his crew face. During his adventures, Odysseus’ positive and negative traits are revealed, such as confidence, hubris, and secrecy.
The epic poem The Odyssey, written by Homer, centers around the main protagonist Odysseus and his long journey back home. Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, returns home after defeating the Trojans in a ten year war. On his way back, he angers Poseidon, god of the sea, by blinding his son, Polyphemus the Cyclops. Due to Odysseus’ actions, Poseidon refuses to let Odysseus reach home, and Odysseus and his crew are forced to go through a series of obstacles throughout the epic. Through this adversity, Odysseus must show his heroic attributions in order to survive. Homer portrays Odysseus as a hero by giving him characteristics such as: craftiness, loyalty, and bravery.
In the epic poem, The Odyssey, by Homer, a hero named Odysseus takes a journey back from the Trojan War in Troy. Odysseus and his crew must make their way home to Ithaca, where he leads with his wife. He displays himself, in some instances, brave and courageous, but everyone has their flaws. Odysseus is actually not a good leader or an admirable character. Odysseus lacks some of the very important qualities of being a great leader. Instead he is very prideful, stubborn, and lacks responsibility.
