He travels towards Ithaca but does not reach it because he is not in favor of Poseidon, god of the sea, who prevents his return. For many years, Odysseus wanders the seas and has many adventures. Meanwhile, suitors attempt to marry Penelope, Odysseus’ wife, but she remains faithful to her husband. The gods pity Odysseus and assist in his safe return to Ithaca. The horse was taken inside the enemy walls into Troy. Everyone inside the horse wanted to say something but Odysseus was patient and did not say anything, nor did he let anyone else say a word. Anticles would have said a word, according to Menalaus, but “...Odysseus held his two hands tight over the man’s mouth, and saved the whole nation...'; (Pg. 50) Odysseus made the plan of the wooden horse successful with his self-discipline. Another example of Odysseus’s discipline is shown when he meets Nausicaa. Odysseus is caught in a storm at sea and undergoes much suffering until Athena and a sea nymph help him to an island. He awakes to the sight of the beautiful princess Nausicaa. After almost dying and grateful to see anyone, he wants to run to Nausicaa. He debates whether to run to her and throw his arms around her or stand where he is and politely ask for clothes. Because of his self-discipline, Odysseus restrains himself and politely speaks with Nausicaa so she will not run away. The last and one of the greatest examples of Odysseus’ self-discipline occurs when he returns home disguised as a beggar. In order to carry out his plan to take revenge on his wife’s suitors and to come home to his wife, he dresses as a beggar to assess the situation and devise a plan. He is able to speak with his wife and friends and still keep his identity secret. Because of his self-discipline,
Around the 1200 B.C., Odysseus was sailing the Mediterranean Sea for the purpose of reaching home. In his long narrative poem, The Odyssey, Homer conveys how Odysseus desperately wishes to go home to Ithaca. However, he faces brutal treatment and obstacles from several different antagonists, and more obstacles appear when he reaches home. Odysseus came across many external conflicts, which he dealt with intelligence, determination, and loyalty.
The Odyssey is a great tale recounting the story of Odysseus, king of Ithaca, and his riveting adventures during his ten-year journey from Troy to his homeland Ithaca. He encounters many challenges, both in the form of monsters and gods, and faces adversity with commendable bravery and cunning. The Odyssey is a Greek epic that displays many characteristics of a hero, including loyalty, perseverance, and bravery, all of which Odysseus demonstrates. It also has the trademark of an epic, including elevated diction and simile, supernatural intervention, and the exploits of a hero who represents the culture and values of Ancient Greece. The Odyssey contains various instances during which Odysseus displays all of the characteristics of a hero.
Although Odysseus sporadically made mistakes, his bravery, inventiveness, and intelligence aided him and his men in overcoming laborious obstacles throughout the journey. One way Odysseus’s physical strength was shown was when he tied members
Throughout books one through twelve, Odysseus shows loyalty. He meets beautiful women, such as Circe and Calypose. Odysseus could have left his family for a better life, but he never strayed from his goal of reuniting with his family. Odysseus also shows intelligence. When facing the Cyclops, he used this gift to escape death. He told Cyclops that his name is Nobody. When Odysseus blinds the cyclops, it could not get aid from other Cyclops because “Nobody” stabbed him. Odysseus also shows bravery. By facing Cyclops, Scylla, and Charybdis. Fighting these creatures is life risking. WIth the low odds of survival, Odysseus fights back with no fear. These qualities are needed today because they are key for success. In life, a person must be intelligent and take risks to be successful in this cruel world. A person must also show loyalty for an easier life. A person cannot raise a family or keep a job without
Being separated from someone for long periods of time is quite depressing, but imagine being away from your special someone for 20 years. The 10 years it took to fight the Trojan War were anything but easy for Odysseus, the hero of The Odyssey written by the poet Homer. The venture home was much worse due to encounters with monsters such as the Cyclops Polyphemus, raging storms, challenges from forceful gods and goddesses, and setbacks due to foolishness and pride. Odysseus displays many qualities through-out his journey home, some negative and others positive. In “The Homecoming,” Odysseus reveals his great courage, intelligence, and strength.
Odysseus, the main character and the hero of the epic, The Odyssey, is the leader of a fleet of men who tend to get themselves in many wild shenanigans and setbacks. Although he does get and at his men, he understands the human nature of his men, and do want the best for them. This task of keeping his men alive is made easier by the fact that Odysseus is naturally a heroic person and leader. He is willing to do or go anywhere to ensure the safety of his men and a higher chance of arriving at their home, Ithaka. Thus, throughout the course of Book 10, Odysseus has shown to readers that he justifies the traits that originates from being a brave and caring leader.
In The Odyssey, by Homer, Odysseus goes through this epic sea voyage that takes him nearly 10 years. Along the way, Odysseus faces many challenges he has to overcome in order to reach Ithaka, his home, but all his crew members end up dying because of Odysseus’ actions. Like the quote said by the Prophet Muhammad, Odysseus isn’t able to reach home quickly because of his arrogance and other flaws to his personality. Many readers will argue that Odysseus is a hero for returning home heroically, but Odysseus has many flaws to his personality such as his arrogance, curiosity, and selfishness, which causes violence and unwarranted death along Odysseus’
“Human Beings, we have dark sides; we have dark issues in our lives. To progress anywhere in life, you have to face your demons” (Noble). In The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus is returning from a ten year war fought in Troy. To return to his home in Ithaca, Odysseus, must conquer the many challenges he and his crew face. During his adventures, Odysseus’ positive and negative traits are revealed, such as confidence, hubris, and secrecy.
Odysseus is the main character in an epic poem called the Odyssey. In the poem Odysseus has had some bad luck getting home, with some of the gods helping him and some hindering him; his journey towards home is a constant struggle. In this poem we see a man being broke and rebuilt, through constant irony his faith was damaged and without the help of Athena he probably would have given up on his journey. Through his hard work and wise spirit he finally does achieve his goal.
The odyssey, Homer's epic which documents Odysseus and his, give or take 20years struggle to return home after the Trojan War. Odysseus battles mythological creatures and fights against the wrath of gods like Poseidon, his wife Penelope and his son Telemacus turn away all other suitors looking for his mother's hand in marriage and defend his throne in Ithaca and at the same time anticipating Odysseus return home.
The Odyssey is the tale of the Greek hero Odysseus, written by Homer around 8th century B.C. about his journey home at the end of the Trojan War. Odysseus spends ten years of his life on this voyage, guided by the Greek goddess, Athena. While Odysseus is battling Poseidon and attempting to free himself from the grasp of Calypso’s influence, his wife and son, Penelope and Telemachus, struggle to maintain his kingdom in Ithaca. He is pronounced dead and his faithful yet weakening wife is overwhelmed with men who wish to marry her.
Another trait that Odysseus demonstrates repeatedly throughout the story is his loyalty. In various situations he never gives up on his crew, even when he has reason to. During an episode in the epic, Odysseus travels to the underworld to receive a prophecy. He meets his great friend Elpenor, who has died earlier in Circe’s hall. Because he is unburied and unmourned he asks Odysseus to build a cairn in his honor. Odysseus replies, “Unhappy spirit, / I promise you the barrow and the burial.” (Homer, lines 609-610). Although Odysseus is preoccupied with finding Tiresias, he shows loyalty to his crew mate by spending time with his spirit, and carrying out the spirit’s request. It could have been easy for Odysseus to ignore the spirit of Elpenor, but Odysseus shows a real emotional reply to this meeting. Not only does he show loyalty to his crew but his homeland as well. Although he could have given up during the ten year span Odysseus wandered from home, he persisted even though giving up would have been easier. At one point Odysseus is detained by the enchantress, Circe, but remains determined to reach home:
Odysseus, king of Ithaca, was probably on of the greatest warriors in the history of Ancient Greece. It is said that the poet, Homer, wrote the story of the Odyssey. In this story, Odysseus and his crew are trying to make their voyage back home to Ithaca after they have fought with the Trojans. During the long journey, Odysseus will show some of his character traits which include his bravery, cleverness, and wisdom that will assist him with the situations he encounters on his journey home.
One of the biggest traits Odysseus shows throughout the story is his bravery. The whole story Odysseus shows his courage. Taking every mission knowing there could be death; Odysseus still did not give up. Odysseus did whatever it took to make back to Ithaca for his wife and son. Odysseus showed courage by outsmarting the Cyclops. Odysseus went to the land of the dead just to bury a dead shipmate with no fear. But Odysseus showed his every bit of bravery when planning and fighting against the suitors. Odysseus set up plans to kill all the suitors with only 3 people with him. Odysseus refused to back down from the suitors so when the time came he was prepared. When all the suitors were killed Odysseus and his family had finally reunited. After 20 years of Odysseus bravery had all paid off. That’s why I think Odysseus shows he has lots of bravery throughout the story.
During his journey Odysseus used what he has learned from is mistakes to return home and kill the suitors of his wife. On the island of Cicones, and with his encounter with Polyphemus, Odysseus learned that bragging can bring great misfortune. On Ithaca Odysseus never brags to the suitors and is able to enter his house with the Antinous and the other suitors knowing his real identity. He takes the punishment of Antinous and the other suitors without saying a word and is able to see those who have invaded his house. Odysseus is able to see who is loyal and who is not and take his revenge with the suitors never knowing who
