Dreamers are going to Dream
Everybody has their dreams that they chase and look up too, like becoming a great U.S. president. In the book Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, some of the main characters, and side character(s), dream about achieving something they want. George and Lennie are working on a ranch, hoping to reach their dream of owning their very own land. Candy also has a dream of being on this farm with Lennie and George. Curley’s wife didn’t meet her dream of becoming a movie star, so she has settled for less and married Curley. The dreams of George and Lennie, Candy, and Curley’s wife in the book affected their lives for good and bad, also it set the mood of the book each time the dream was brought up.

Early in the novel in Of Mice and Men, George first tells Lennie about their dream. Lennie continuously begs George to tell the story. The book says, “O.K. Someday--we’re gonna get the jack together and we’re gonna have a little house and a couple of acres an’ a cow and some pigs…” (14) This quote relates to the dreams because it is the first time the book explains George’s and Lennie’s dream. In the beginning of the story, two men named George Milton and Lennie Small are trying to make their way to a small ranch in Salinas Valley, California. George is the leader of their two man tribe, despite Lennie’s intimidating size. George is filled with determination and confidence while Lennie is a simple man with a big heart.
Hopes and dreams can be very important for peoples’ needs and survival. In Steinbeck’s story, Of Mice and Men, each of the main characters is driven by their hopes and dreams; it provides a sense of motivation and animation to each of their being. From Lennie and George being driven by their hopes and dreams of owning a farm, to Curley’s wife’s dreams of becoming an actress, having dreams plays an essential role in giving hope to the characters of Steinbeck’s story. Although dreams and hopes are essential themes in Steinbeck’s story, in a sense, Steinbeck does seem to emphasize that dreams are not meant to be achieved, and that there are other factors that are essential for survival. Everyone has dreams, big and small. When one dreams, there is a scent of whimsical hope in the air mixed with the powerful drive for success to obtain their luminous goals. But, many times these luscious dreams end up in grief and pain instead of a promised joy due to the hurdles in life, such as the certain circumstances that society professes or the flaws in a person that restrains them from their aspirations. The writer, John Steinbeck, incorporates this ideology in his novella, Of Mice and Men by creating three pivotal characters. In Of Mice and Men, the hopes and dreams of the men on the ranch are a continuous focus and theme throughout the novel. John Steinbeck portrays the effects that dreams, or lack of them, have on the lives of the characters and the outcome of the novel. Steinbeck uses the concept of dreams at once to show hope and aspiration, as they invoke companionship with united determination for a better future, and to illustrate the difficulties of survival, with unrealised dreams illuminating the dark despair of society at that time.
In chapter one, the main events that happen where: I. In the beginning of the story, the author describe over the details of the Salinas River and he wants to explain that his main characters George and Lennie will have a sense of the setting. The author says, "A few miles south of Soledad, the Salinas River drops in close to the hillside bank and runs deep and green. The water is warm too, for it has slipped twinkling over the yellow sands in the sunlight before reaching the narrow pool." (1) This shows how the author gives the description of Salinas River, how the valley runs down green, hillside banks and yellow sands.
With the dream being a major aspect in the novel, it plays a big role in each of the characters lives. John Steinbeck shows the meaning behind having a goal in life. The dream did not only help Lennie and George separately, but it brought them closer together. The friendship they share progressed as the their dream started to become a reality. By reading this novel, a reader can learn the importance of having a dream. Dreams can have a strong, and lasting affect on people, in which can change their lives, and others lives forever. Dreams affected characters in Of Mice and Men by making Lennie strive to change his behavior, George to work hard and make important decisions, and also Candy to invest his life’s savings, and the rest of his life into the possibility of achieving their dreams. Having a dream changed the way Lennie behaved, or else he Would not have been able to tend the the rabbits if they had bought the ranch. At a point in the story, George said to Lennie “You get in trouble, you do bad things and I got to get you out. ”(SteinBeck 11)
There are many kinds of dreams, but in John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men he focuses on dreams of something someone would want to achieve, and how those dreams affect them.
It has been said that “Hopes and dreams help people to survive, even if they can never become real.” In John Steinbeck’s novel Of Mice and Men, his characters, Lennie and George, have dreams that help them look forward to the future. They have rough lives with no home to call their own and they wander from job to job. Their dream is to someday own their own farm. Talking about it keeps them going as if it’s real already. The constant reference to the goal to own a farm is what makes them get up in the morning. The dream bonds their relationship and makes them hopeful and committed to each other by giving them the strength to survive.

While Of Mice and Men may be an incredibly crappy novel, there is one thing that isn´t so bad, being that the reader can somewhat relate to the characters, or at least understand them. In the story, two friends, Lennie and George, decide to work on a ranch for some quick money. However, Lennie, being slow on the draw, accidently kills one of the people on the ranch. George decides to kill his friend before the others do. Lennie, George, and Crooks are the three characters come to mind in terms of affinity.
