In the 1930s there were a lot of things going on like the Great Depression, the aftermath of World War 2, and racism. Most of America was coming up on hard times and for African Americans it was even harder. In the book Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck he goes through and shows you all the hardships of having barriers and prejudiceness put on someone and how it affects them emotionally. He also shows you how it can feel to be powerless and have no control over your dreams. This is all show in the characters Lennie and George; farm hands and Crooks a stable buck. In Of Mice and Men you see how barriers, prejudice and powerlessness affects all of them. Barriers, prejudice and powerlessness will hold people back from having a happy life. Having barriers and prejudice put on you will make you a hateful person. Anytime someone has barriers and prejudiceness put on them they tend to become just like that people that hate them, a hateful person. For example Crooks in the book Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck is a black man in the 1930s so there is a whole lot of racism and hate toward him. Not only is he a black man, but he is injured and he works on a farm with all white people even though the owner didn’t fire him when he got injured most of the people at the farm don’t respect Crooks and don’t
