The book Of Mice and Men written by John Steinbeck shows true friendship best through characters’ interactions. George shows true friendship to Lennie by staying with him. This is shown when George explains to Lennie “if I was alone I could live so easy” (Steinbeck 11). This passage is an example of George showing Lennie true friendship when George sticks with him even though it’s not in his own interest but best for Lennie. Secondly, true friendship is shown by Candy to his dog when even though he doesn’t want to allows Carlson to put his dog out of its misery. Carlson tells Candy ”I’ll put the old devil out of his misery… Awright” Candy replies (Steinbeck 47). Carlson’s interaction with Candy show’s Candy’s love for his dog and even though
All throughout the book, Lennie has counted on George and vice versa. Crooks, has taken into account of the type of bond that Lennie and George share, and in chapter four, while all of the men are in town, Lennie goes into Crook’s room and talks to him. Crooks almost immediately attacks him by saying “S’pose George don’t come back no more?…what would you do then?” S’pose he gets killed or hurt so that he can’t come back? (Steinbeck, 71). Crooks only attacks Lennie with questions like this because Crooks, unlike George and Lennie, has no one he can call a friend.
When characters struggle, their true personalities shine through, leaving them with their true friends who were the ones who stood by them in a time of change. In Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, Lennie struggles with a new job, but has a goal in mind and a promise to George. This promise keeps Lennie from spiraling off, George keeps Lennie going. I believe George and Lennie had a true friendship which was shown through the challenges they faced. Of Mice and Men and “Friendship in an Age of Economics” by Todd May, show not only true friendships, but different types of friendships and how they help characters make decisions.
Through the novella, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, the authors use of motifs of Lennie getting in trouble reveals the theme of friendship is an important part to living a fulfilling life. Through the whole book George is helping Lennie get out of sticky situations, but the motif of Lennie getting in trouble ends their friendship in a very tragic way. Toward the end of the book, George had to kill Lennie, his best friend, because there isn’t anyway out of the sticky situation that doesn’t involve Lennie dying. After killing Lennie George was in shock of what he had just done. Steinbeck narrates, “But Carlson was standing over George.
As Thomas Aquinas states, “There is nothing on this earth more prized than true friendship.” Friends cheer each other up when they are sad and support them when they are happy. In John Steinbeck’s novella Of Mice and Men, two migrant workers, George and Lennie, arrive as newcomers on the ranch. Throughout the story, different problems are thrown their way, and their friendship is tested with each one. George shows how true friendship requires sacrifice because friends sacrifice personal freedom, they protect each other, and they sacrifice emotional energy.
In the book, Of Mice and Men, written by John Steinbeck, there are two migrant workers that form an unlikely pair and travel together. George is small and is brilliant and Lennie is big but has the mind of a child. Because Lennie is not intelligent, he requires George to take care of him. At the end of the story, Lennie gets into big trouble and will face a death penalty until George makes the hard decision to shoot Lennie and end his life. This raises the question that asks if George and Lennie are true friends. They are true friends because they both help each other and push each other to be better while also looking out for each other in Salinas where they work as ranch workers . This is because George understands Lennie and protects Lennie. While George does help Lennie, Lennie also provides George with companionship and a goal to work towards.
Good friendships make life easier. Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, is about two men, George and Lennie, who go on various journeys in order to get a job. Although George would consider Lennie to be his closest friend, he ultimately ends up shooting and killing Lennie. George did this, not out of hatred, but rather out of protection. A good friend will always want what is best for one another. Steinbeck uses his protagonists’ friendship in order to show that true friendship can help make any of life’s hardships less difficult.
In the Of Mice and Men friendship barley exists, the only people that are considered as friends are Lennie and George. George is always bragging on Lennie, even if he is not smart but he can work extremely hard (Steinbeck 39). Slim, a guy that also works that the ranch, tells George that he does not know how a smart guy like him and dumb guy like Lennie are friends and have been traveling together (Steinbeck 39). Even though George cannot stand Lennie since he is dumb, he defends him from anyone that tries to insult him and treat him like he was crazy (Steinbeck 39). Lennie and George were born from the same town (Steinbeck 40). After Lennie aunt died, George started to take care of him (Steinbeck 40). No one friendship was as well as Lennie with George (Steinbeck 40). Candy another man that lived there, at the farm, is trying to be friends with Lennie and George, since they killed his aged dog now (Steinbeck 61).
John Steinbeck has written many novels. Of his most famous, the tale, Of Mice and Men, tells the tale about the strife of friendship. The two main characters, George Milton, and Lennie Small, are the best of friends, despite Lennie’s mental disability. Another friendship that is portrayed in the story would be the friendship between Candy and his very old, sickly dog. Another friendship, that is more vague than the others, is the friendship between all the bunkmates; the farm workers. When Steinbeck wrote this epic novella, he not only wrote about friendships, but he showed that friends will go to the ends of the Earth for each other.
Most people have a friend, no matter if it is a best friend forever, simply a friendship, or someone they feel comfortable with. However, one must come out of their shell to create a new, compatible feeling between another. In which, John Steinbeck, author of Of Mice and Men, shows that everyone is different in their unique ways. Friendships can happen between any individual as long as they support and trust each other, shown between George and Lennie. There is support for both characters as they continue to state what they have in the journey for each other.
In the story, Of Mice and Men, friendship plays a major role in the way the story is told. George and Lennie is just a little part of the story. The reason George and Lennie are the main reason for this is because, George and Lennie take care of each other like no one else does. George and Lennie’s friendship is there because Lennie can’t take care of himself so George wanted to help Lennie do better in life. Another reason is that all the characters in “Of Mice and Men” is that they never had another person on their side through their life.
Do you ever fight with your longtime best friend over something huge, and end up losing them in the aftermath? George and Lennie have been traveling with each other for a long time, but as they are on the verge of their dream Lennie goes and messes it up, which causes George to have to do something he never wanted to do. In Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, it has a common theme of friendship. Friendship is what carries people throughout their lives, and without it life could be very hard. George’s friendship was the only reason why Lennie had survived all this time as seen through the conflict .
In life, people regularly encounter new friends in various places at different times. However, they are usually unaware of who their real friends are. What is the conceptual meaning of a friend? A person who you talk to occasionally? A person who supports you from the back? What is the correct description of a real friend? In John Steinbeck’s novella Of Mice and Men, the story depicts a story of ranch workers during Great Depression in 1939 as they struggle to survive the cruel world undergoing an economic crisis. Throughout the book, the characters, George, Lennie, Slim, and others develop certain levels of friendships and bonds among them, which the author utilizes them to explore the diverse values of friendships. The interactions between
Friendship is the most powerful force in the world. Through the stability of a friendship, daunting challenges seem to shrink in size and volatile emotions become controllable. In John Steinbeck’s tragedy Of Mice and Men, George makes an unfortunate sacrifice and kills his best friend Lennie Small. {To the outside observer, the sacrifice that George takes may appear to be a murder motivated by self-interest. At first, Lennie seems to be utterly useless and even detrimental towards George’s goals of finding a wife and settling down. George sometimes even flies into a rant on how his life would be better without his friend as a burden.} These claims make sense, but they ignore how almost all of George’s actions are done to make Lennie happier. While the two are on the ranch, George acts fiercely protective over Lennie, sheltering him from harm. He spares Lennie from a future filled with misery by
Loneliness How do you feel when you are left alone a long time?Probably not good. How do you think you would feel if you were lonely your whole? You’d go insane. In the story, Of Mice and Men, by John Steinback, loneliness is a major theme. It effects most of the people on the ranch, who have little money, and leave on their journey by themselves.
Imagine that you are treated like trash, forced to live alone or suppose that you are only allowed to speak to your spouse, no one else. Wouldn’t this continuous cycle of mistreatment and being ignored make you feel lonely? The biggest characters that follow this trend were written about by John Steinbeck. Both of them can be found in his novel, Of Mice and Men. These aren’t the main characters, however they both interact with Lennie and George throughout the novel.
