Good Friend There are many types of friendships. The basic of all types of friendships are the good friends and the bad friends.Bad friends are the type that aren’t there for you and sometimes even the person talking behind your back. Good friends are the real friends who are always there for you no matter what and the ones by your side, protecting you. An example of a good friend can be found in the novella, ”Of Mice and Men,” by John Steinbeck. George and Lennie, the main characters , we're friends and after reading the novella , I believe overall George was a good friend to Lennie.
In the book , It says that George took care of Lennie after Lennie's Aunt Cara died (Steinback 40) . I believe that shows that George was a good friend to Lennie.

Lennie wasn’t the brightest of guys and so he had a knack for finding trouble. However in every problem that Lennie encountered , George was always there with a plan. For example in the novella on page 11, George and Lennie hid in an irrigation ditch after Lennie touched a girl's dress and scared her. That showed George protecting Lennie and him being there for Lennie no matter what.
Those who disagree believe George was a bad friend to Lennie. They might believe that for the reason that George killed Lennie. However i believe the way George killed Lennie shows that he's a good friend. If George hadn't killed Lennie then Curley and the others would have and they would've killed Lennie in a much more worse way then George had. Lennie would have died terrified and most likely painfully.Instead Lennie died happy with George telling him about the rabbits and the land.
In short, George was a good friend. He was a good friend because he was always by Lennie’s side and he always protected him.Of course they had a couple of rough patches in their friendship but what friendship doesn't have at least a couple. No one’s perfect so no one can have a friendship without a few dents in it
Many characters in, “Of Mice and Men”, show friendship. George and Lennie show the most examples of having a great friendship. George and Lennie both take each care of one another and care about each other. They both support each other in making the dream of living off the fatta’ the land, come true. Doing these things prove that they have a strong friendship.
In this story George was one of the main or major characters, and he does undergo many changes and also fills several roles, one of which is Lennie’s friend. As a character he wasn’t bad but also not spectacular, but when it came to Lennie’s friend he not only came through but above and beyond. He even made Lennie’s death bearable, by letting his last thought be friendly. he also stick with Lennie through thick and thin, as
George’s good nature can be seen through the way he takes Lennie under his wing. For George, there is no benefits that come from taking care of Lennie, he just does it out of the goodness in his heart. An example of this can be seen when George helped Lennie escape out of the town of Weed, in which Lennie had been accused of rape for clutching onto a girl’s dress. Unlike Lennie, George does not have any mental disability and can perfectly function by himself. This is the aspect that makes him such a good person, because taking care of Lennie is just like dragging around a ball and chain. George could be living a much better life on his own without Lennie. To prove this, George even says it himself when talking to Lennie: “God you’re a lot of trouble. I could get along so easy and so nice if I didn’t have you on my tail. I could live so easy and maybe have a girl” (OM&M 7). Despite these words, George still takes care of Lennie because George knows that without his guidance, Lennie would be left to be taken advantage of out in the dangerous world. From George’s devotion to Lennie, it is shown that one who is good will guide others, even if it means sacrificing something he could have
Even though George sometimes says how much better his life would be without Lennie, he will always protect Lennie. George is devoted to watching out for Lennie. He is always telling Lennie not to talk because that will probably lead to trouble. If Lennie gets in trouble that will block the both of them from living their dream. So George is inspired to keep Lennie out of trouble.
To George and Lennie, having a friend with them is really lucky, but their luckiness didn 't last very long. At the end of the book, George shot Lennie at the back of his head. That was one of George’s two choices: let Curley kill Lennie or kill Lennie by himself. Like a father, George thought it’s his responsibility to kill Lennie to payback the life of
love each other in their eyes. There is an example of this unity at the start of
A good friendship is needed to survive through tough times. Lennie respects George because George gives him comfort. George cares for Lennie so much that he considers him to be part of his family: “George said, he’s my cousin. I told his old lady id take care of him. He got kicked in the head by a horse when he was a kid” (Steinbeck 22). Aside from comfort and advice, Lennie also needs George because when he gets in trouble, George always manages to find a way to help him get out of it. When Lennie had got in trouble in Weed, George stays by his side and gives him advice that helps remain safe and calm. George has many opportunities to leave Lennie and change his lifestyle, but he needs Lennie just as much in order to help him through his own hardships. Lennie looks
George takes care of Lennie many ways. George has taken care of Lennie for a long time. George took him under his wing even though he didn’t need to. George genuinely cares for Lennie. He feeds him, makes sure he is safe, also he gives him hope. George is constantly watching Lennie. George is a good friend to Lennie; however, George gets annoyed with Lennie very easily. He does this to make sure he doesn’t get into trouble or lost. He never leaves him by himself. This is shown when Lennie offers to leave, but George tells him “I want you to stay with me Lennie”(Steinbeck 104). George really cares for Lennie.
I could also notice when I was reading through the first chapter that George has a sense of authority over Lennie, “you gonna get that wood”. This is like a parent telling a child to do his chores. On some occasions though George shows a bit of hatred towards Lennie, he thinks of what he could have if Lennie wasn’t around and contrasts that with George.
George and Lennie were best friends. They were always together, and were always there for each other. Later in the book, we find out that they want to buy a farm together. George told Lennie he could help with the rabbits. As you see, they even had a future planned out. Some may say them being friends doesn’t matter, and it is better than a stranger killing
George took Lennie in after Lennie’s aunt died. George knew his aunt pretty well. Lennie had nowhere to go afterwards, so George let Lennie come along with him. George wasn’t always nice to Lennie in the beginning. George would tease him and trick him. Lennie didn’t know any better than to listen to George, even if it was a taunt. After an incident happened to Lennie, George stopped tormenting him. He felt bad for Lennie and how he treated him. From this moment on, George actually took into consideration of Lennie’s mindset. In the book, Steinbeck writes,
John Steinbeck shows that George and Lennie have a true friendship be them taking care of each other by stating, “If you don’ want me I can go off in the hills an’ find a cave. I can go away any time. No – look! I was jus’ foolin’” (Steinbeck 12). This quote shows that George and Lennie share the true meaning of friendship by taking care of each other. George tells Lennie to stay with him and not to run of because Lennie can’t care for himself. Another quote that shows George and Lennie support one another is when the narrator states, “… I musta lost it… You never had none you crazy bastard” (Steinbeck 5). This quote shows the true meaning of friendship
George says he wants Lennie to stay with him because george is trying to keep lennie from getting hurt or even killed. “Lennie never done it in meanness,” he said. “All the time he done bad things but he never done any of ‘em mean - (95). This quote shows George sticking up for lennie because lennie did something he wasn't supposed to. George is always looking out for lennie as if he were his little brother.
George goes from feeling that Lennie is a huge problem in his life to acting as a caring father or brother would. In Chapter One of the novel George hates taking care of Lennie even if he knows he is obligated to do so. This makes George treat Lennie worse than he really should do and it is unfair for Lennie. He constantly scolds Lennie and even says that he (Lennie) would be better off if he (George) did not care for him.
Lennie is extremely dependent on George and gains a lot more from him. Growing up, George acts like Lennie’s father figure and has been the person to take care of him, when Lennie’s Aunt Clara passed away. Lennie isn’t the brightest person, but that doesn’t seem to bother George. Lennie relies on George to remember everything for him as he isn’t able to himself. When Lennie got in trouble in Weed, George
