Aging in general is a difficult process but added a disability makes it much harder. Eddy contracted polio in the 1950s when there was an outbreak. Because of this disease he lost one leg, he grew up having to use crutches his whole life. His family was very involved with sports, his father wanted to keep his kids strong and mentally tough. He grew up with a normal life, being involved and not felling any different. He is thankful that his dad pushed him to do his best in life with his academics and sports. He has won a gold and silver medal nine-times in the Paralympics and in the pan American Lifting Games. Growing up with a disability is difficult but it made him stronger. While in high he was involved in football and rowing, his teammates welcomed him and this made him happy. His parents were his roll models, he was a view president at a company in Philly, until losing his job. Following in his dad’s footsteps he built a gym in their house at the age of 14. Kids from around the neighborhood would come over to train, from ages 16-20. This is when he began his journey for weight lifting began. Living day by day helped him deal with the health issues he faced. Staying positive is very important with living with a disability.
Eddy has experience may things in his life that could have held him back but he kept going. Sport has helped him push boundaries and learn self-determination, his new motto
Stories become a great influence on people as they view other people either on television or through a book as they explain their struggles or experiences. They should not view them as a negative perspective because of the media. In the article, “ Slippery Slopes: Media, Disability, and Adaptive Sport,” the author William Peace notes how the media shows disability out as “something to be miraculously and inspirationally ‘overcome’ with real consequences”(Peace 676). When taking a gander at somebody with an incapacity, people tend to believe that they are not ready to do the things that individuals with abled bodies can, which is false. While having an incapacity there are approaches to work around things. People don't have to surrender and
Yes, I agree with you that people are living much longer thanks to advances in technology and medicine. Thus, the older adults (I prefer to use the term older than elderly or geriatric), is one group of the population that Healthy People 2020 has assigned a separate topic of concern. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggested that any health promotion for the older adult has to take into consideration the psychosocial determinants of health. Given that older adults may not have the physical strength or stamina of the younger population, participation in physical activities should be encouraged (Healthy People 2020). If you don’t mind I would like to suggest that you include some kind of activity in your program
Before taking this class, I was not aware of the built environment and what they do to promote physical activity in the community. The assignment of the Health and Wellness for Every Age, allowed me to create a wellness program for a specific group. This assignment gave me a real perspective of designing a meal plan and exercise program for an age group. This assignment will help me in the future because the recommended types, intensity, duration, and frequency vary across age groups. Besides, the marketing project was my favorite assignment, however, it was very difficult because I had to use all my skills in order to create a wellness program. I had to think critically, to plan, organize, and control my ideas and integrate what I learned in class. In this project, I used my imagination to advertise my idea of building a health center for the homeless. This project inspired me to work in an organization that offers many benefits to people such as free and affordable medical services. I would like to be part of a health center and help clients to make healthy choices as healthy eating and physical
In chapter two of No Pity, the author Joseph P. Shapiro brings to life the story of Ed Roberts. Ed Roberts was just your everyday kid, who had a passion for sports. When he was fourteen though, he was diagnosed with Polio. The Polio left him in an iron lung and in the hospital for twenty months. During this time, Ed really struggled with himself. Eventually, he realized even though he now had disability, no one could take away his education and intellect. Ed later attended University of California at Berkeley, where he created innovative programs to help individuals with disabilities. When Ed attended the university, he had no other option but to live at the university hospital. Here, Ed met another quadriplegic named John Hesser. Together, through the “Rolling Quads” club, they fought against stereotypes and wanted to change the way individuals with disabilities were treated. Even making significant progress by putting ramps up on campus. Additionally, the created the Physically Disabled Students’ Program. This program advocated for big issues, such as individual rights, independance, and a better standard of living for individuals with disabilities.
Within the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention article there are people who share their story about living a disabled life. Nickole has spinal muscular atrophy, which is a genetic disability she had since birth. She talks about
How would people act or feel if their body is slowly weakening? Nancy Mairs, The author in the story “On Being A Cripple” shows that being a cripple does not make you different than anyone else. She also shows the reader that discriminating yourself will not just make it worse but it will be a disaster. To her she is a normal person but to others they see a “disabled” or “handicapped”.By using her experience on being a cripple, Mairs effectively draws the audience into her argument and shows them the good and the bad side of her condition. She uses many strategies that will make it easy for the readers to understand her essay. Mairs uses vivid descriptions, experience and her emotion to describe her life as
Being born with no legs was the ultimate problem Leeper had to face in his life but he chose to respond in a positive way trying to work up to what his is today as an olympic gold medalist.Leeper was known for his quote, “ The only real disability it a bad attitude.” Leeper motivated people by doing things that he was told that he probably wouldn't be able to do but his fiery ambition aloud he to overcome this challenges. “Obviously, because of my disability, I need assistance. But I have always tried to overcome my condition and lead as full a life as possible.” Stephen Hawking, who is often regarded as one of the greatest minds in history, did indeed have a severe disability that would have discouraged many from pursuing any type of career, but he did not let his condition stop him from unraveling the mysteries of our world. As he stated, Hawking has always tried to live the fullest life he could, but he could not have done it without the support and assistance of others. Christopher Reeve, another person who did not let his paralysis keep him from achieving great things, wrote a compelling speech that pushed for increased support and assistance for
The physical activity intervention, at public housing or underserved areas is a great initiative to target African-American women living in such areas. For example, a study was conducted to evaluate the impact of a 6-month individualized exercise program for the underserved African American women in southeastern rural county in Alabama, one of the 13 states that is reported to score worse than average on health status for women.2 The study offered gym access in a
Physical activity is a very important aspect of an individual’s life. There are many health benefits to being physically active. Living an active life helps to prevent and lower the risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes, obesity, depression, and heart disease (Tuso, 2015). Healthy People 2020 (2018) states that about 80% of adults and adolescents do not meet the physical activity guidelines. Staying active may be difficult if there are no community resources to help. The intention of this paper is to implement interventions within Paulding County that will help increase physical activity among community members.
The intended audience for this book are athletes, but anyone can read this book because his philosophies can be used in our daily lives. The book spreads forty lessons in four parts: Part I - Welcome to the Inner Game Part II - Living the Dream Part III - Mind-Set for Success
When Brent walked into our class room, you could not tell he had any type of disability. He began talking about his high school and college days, how he participated in all sports, played baseball at UNO as a pitcher, and eventually made it to the minor leagues. He decided that he was not getting anywhere with baseball, so he made his way back to Nebraska. One day his life completely changed on his way home from Lincoln to Omaha. When traveling home, the car in front of him spun out of control, and landed in the ditch. Brent got out to help, and on his way back to his car to call for help, another car slid of the road, and hit Brent, which threw him. After 10-12 surgeries and spending a month in the hospital, Brent now has a prosthetic left leg from the knee down, and his right leg is full of pins and his ankle is bone on bone. Eventually, he will have to get a prosthetic leg on his right as well. After the accident, he was tired of people feeling sorry for him, and tired of people trying to do everything for him, especially when he was
Abraham Maslow once said, “In any given moment we have two options: to step forward into growth or to step backward into safety.” My whole life I have had many medical issues typically preventing one from doing a lot of the “normal” things a child can do. But I truly believe that life is not about the circumstances you were given, but much rather how you choose to react to them. So growing up I have always managed to find a way to not let my disabilities hinder me from living my life like everyone else and defy the odds I was handed.
When you see someone suffering from a disability or some type of disease you might not always think it will happen to you. No matter what the disease or disability is, it’s always going to be an inconvenience for the person that has the condition. Some people are out in the open about their disease, while other are quiet and in the dark about it. I believe that even though people have these issues in their life, they should embrace it and continue to be who they are. They may think why me? Why was I given this burden? Even though this disease may stand in the way of them doing specific things they should come to terms with it and do all the other things that it does let them do.
Funds are essential to set up a community gym, mainly for the building, equipment, and a few employees. Funds are also needed to advertise the free gym access through flyers around the community, school, workplaces, restaurants, etc. Another challenge is to motivate the women to continue or maintain their work-out regimen. In order to observe the effects of physical activity intervention on heart disease in African-American women, long-term commitment is needed. It is more challenging to maintain the routine of working out or attending group fitness classes. It would take at least 6-12 months of routine exercise regimen to notice a significant change in their health. Additionally, community participation is necessary for this intervention to succeed. In order for the intervention to work, a systematic planning is
