Schools could hold educational meetings on mental health to inform and aid parents and children to determine when they need to address mental health. Almost half of the population in the US are affected by mental health conditions every year. A diagnosable mental illness affects about 43 percent of the U.S. population at some point in their lives. 75 percent of youth are left with no or insufficient treatment. If mental illness is recognized early on, it can help citizens avoid large medical bills down the road and could help lessen the amount of homelessness, unemployment, suicides, shootings, bad decision making, etc.

Mental Health is a state of social, emotional and psychological well-being. Mental health affects every part of our life and determines our ability to function, handle stress and make decisions. Throughout life, we have good and bad experiences which affect how we handle situations. The Mental Health Awareness and Improvement Act of 2015 was passed on September 30, 2015. The purpose of this act is to improve programs ordered by the Department of Health and Human Services to increase awareness, prevention and early identification of mental illnesses. Some challenges that affect mental health care in America include lack of knowledge regarding healthcare and insurance, lack of funding, no minimum standards, and lack of access to medication.

Mental illness is not getting the proper attention it needs. The United States should provide more funding to the mentally ill, for research, and medical purposes. Over fifteen million people are diagnosed with a mental illness every year. Many of them have difficulties to afford the treatment they need. Some do not even know that they have a mental illness because they never had a reason or even the finances to get checked. A mental illness can be detected at a young age. One with a mental disorder can suffer from depression and suicide, by receiving support from family and friends can help prevent this. By providing test at public schools could help detect an illness at a young age and give them the proper treatment needed to overcome their illness. Many who have a mental illness are unemployed, and have financial issues. By not receiving the proper treatment can result in harm to themselves or even others. The government is not giving the proper amount of funds for research and treatment. Some take advantage of the system and are the cause of the amount being so low. Mental illness is not getting the appropriate funding it needs to provide proper care.

The American mentally ill population faces numerous barriers to acquiring basic services that those without mental illness receive daily. Advocating for the mentally ill population gives a voice to those who cannot voice their problems or may not know how. Mental illness is often misdiagnosed or underdiagnosed. Individuals who are not properly diagnosed cannot receive necessary medical treatment which can help them live normal lives. I spoke on how government access, mental health stigma, and public awareness all affect how people can get proper treatment in mental health care facilities. I described how mental health care facilities include school, hospitals, as well as outpatient centers across the nation. After Newtown there were many questions being asked what can we do to help our children who are suffering from mental health issues? How can we help families with children whom suffer from the disease? What forms of access to resources within their communities is available to them? Mental health has significantly changed the face of our society, it has shown the world, it has many faces from children to adults. We are all subjects of some type of mental health and having the proper system in place with the proper funding is very important to help those who do not have proper health care.

Past research has demonstrated that there exists a connection between smiling and physical attractiveness. A smiling person was perceived as more intelligent and could create in the perceiver a warmer feeling than a nonsmiling person. This study evaluates whether smiling vs. not smiling and rater’s gender have an effect on attractiveness ratings of a male and a female dating profile. Furthermore, it predicts that there will be a main effect of smiling on the ratings of both, male and female dating profiles. Moreover, it also predicts that there will be an interaction of rater’s gender and smiling for the female profile. However, the results did not support this statement, there was not a main effect of rater’s gender on any of the dating profiles. Both profiles male and female, were better rated when the person was smiling. Indicating that people prefer smiling over the non-smiling faces. On the other hand, no interaction was observed between rater’s genders and smiling for male and female profile.

Awareness. Many people are unaware of the symptoms of mental illness and therefore are not able to spot them in themselves or others. Unfortunately, there is a problem when it comes to educating people on mental health. People don’t want to talk about mental health problems. They are afraid of mental illness and therefore avoid the topic. There is also a stigma in society that those with mental illness are in control of their disabilities so they are told to “change their thinking” rather than to seek medical help. This stigma and ignorance of mental illness symptoms often means that people struggling with mental health problems do not get help until they are at a point of crisis.

When people are mentally ill, they suffer social stigma, have higher health costs, and are at an increased risk of becoming poor. Every one out of five Americans is diagnosed with a mental illness. That 20 percent of the population can negatively influence the normal stresses of life, working productively and fruitfully, and being able to make a contribution the community. When humankind as a whole cannot recognize that mental illness is a serious issue, there is more harm being done than good. Any kind of mental illness can be caused merely by society, but also can worsen due to humanity not understanding how injustice can make a serious impact. The mental health problems that people face can be limited to society learning about the injustice of these illnesses.

In order to bring about awareness of mental illness more programs need to be implemented to help aid in the process. Introducing more programs will allow for the opportunity to reach more people and educate those in the process . Mental illness is a disease that is often a silent killer. Many suffers elect not to seek services because there are little to no services that is geared soely to the disease. It is necessary to offer these programs especially in areas that are considered to be low economic. These programs will provide a service of support , relief of financial burden, and eventually begin to free up some space in the hospitals and clinics of people going when things are at the breaking point.
