The Internet has changed the way we do virtually everything, including the way we shop. However, shopping is not the only thing that has changed. In the last decade we have changed the way, we apply for loans, study, and even plan a vacation. Doing any of these things would have been impossible a few decades ago. At present, online banking, paying bills, ordering new services, and shopping online have become part of our daily lives. Traditional brick-and-mortar stores have been around much longer than online stores, but we cannot deny that online shopping is giving the traditional stores competition. Amazon and eBay attracted the most unique visitors each month to their global e-commerce sites. Forrester Research Inc. estimates that the global online population will be 2.32 billion in 2014. Online shoppers have more options than ever before. Used, hard to find items, and collectables are more accessible thru online shopping. Online shoppers no longer need to drive from one store to the next to find the best deal, and there is no need to stand in long lines making shopping online fast, easy and enjoyable.
In addition, a huge benefit of shopping online is that it allows product and specification comparison so you can purchase what you need and pay less. Online stores have a lower overhead than the traditional stores offering better deals, and the consumer is able to find the product they want at a better price. In traditional brick-and-mortar stores, sales have limited quantities at hand, but online stores are able to keep a bigger inventory giving online shoppers more opportunities to find a bargain. In fact, shopping at several stores at the same time guarantees the consumer the best deal. Shopping online is simple, and finding the right product is easier. The market is expected to reach a 90% growth by 2015 and exceed $827 billion in sales. That shows that people prefer to shop online than going to the actual store in today’s society. Brick and mortar shopping took place in a storefront only; so, if you were looking for something specific and they didn’t have it, you would have to order it online and ship it to the store anyway. The evolution of technology and the internet has brought tremendous change to all facets of daily life. One area where this change is overwhelmingly evident is retail. Where once consumers had to physically go to a store in order to purchase goods and had a limited view of competitors, consumers are now able to shop from anywhere on their mobile devices, and access competing prices with ease. This was great for consumers and online retailers, but for brick-and-mortar businesses like Best Buy, this posed a significant challenge. Brick-and-mortar retailers were tasked with the challenge to adapt and overcome the competition posed by the online retail market, or risk being left in the past.
Many of people do their shopping online because it is convenient, cost-effective, and offers more selection of products rather than going into a physical brick and mortar store. Seemingly, the only downside is the shipping time, but the real cost is that it is gradually killing off local businesses such as the mom and pop shops, department stores, and also shopping malls. These physical stores provide tax base and jobs within their communities. Online retailers largely have minimal overhead, and drive prices down lower than what most brick-and-mortar stores can bare. Online sales have many economic benefits that brick and mortar stores don't have, which has created an environment where online entities thrive while unintentionally causing their brick and mortar counterparts to fail in many cases.
According to shop navigator “one of the main advantages of online shopping is the elimination of the need to drive somewhere to buy something.” Which is true you don’t have to waste your gas just to go to the mall when you can just get what you want online. Another advantage would be the reviews that you get to read about the products that are online; when you’re at the store it’s hard to actually trust the salesperson, because it’s their job is to sale you the item. I don’t know about most people; but, when I’m shopping for clothes I don’t look for the most expensive clothing store, it’s quite the opposite actually. I used to shop at this store online called “Wish”, mainly because it was cheap and some of the clothes had great quality; but, before I’d actually buy the item I’d scroll down to the reviews section and over the years that’s been a huge help.
