LIMITATIONS OF A COMMUNITY GARDEN I should probably mention here that there is two types of community gardens. An organic community garden( no chemicals used whatsoever) An non organic community garden( chemicals may be present in fertilisers) The initial challenge would be to find an area of land to begin with. Since most of the time the land is public property there is always a certain group of citizens who don't want a community garden but a park (regardless of the fact that a park costs more to maintain than a community garden). The second challenge would be the cost of seeds(which vary in season), tools(specific tools for specific jobs) and resources( wood for raised garden beds and water to sustain the plants) Finding motivated and dedicated …show more content…
For example a typical attitude would be “ I don't even like greens, why should I help out?”. The irony in this particular scenario is that even spending time outdoors is a benefit. In a global perspective having a community garden in every city is a inspiration to motivate people into caring for the environment since it is a brilliant opportunity to beautify the environment and provide local produce. As well as having an impact on one’s physical, mental and emotional wellbeing, In some cultures tending a garden is considered a spiritual element. ‘In gardening, as with everything in life, there are actions and consequences. For instance, let’s say you are too busy to water your garden for a few days—as a result, your plants would suffer. Or if you place an herb that thrives on low sunlight intensity in an open field, you may get less of a harvest or even kill it. These are simple understandings that come along with attention and awareness of your garden.’(The 7 Spiritual Laws of Gardening. 2016). I think everyone should give it a go regardless of the few ominous
Lastly the author recommends community gardening as the best option because it will bring the community together. The author claims that the garden will be ‘a great way for children to learn,’ also that ‘kids spend far too much time inside’ and the garden will provide a healthy option for them to go outside and do some physical work in the fresh air. Referring to children as one of the main benefiters from the garden the author not only appeals to the council, because children are the future of their community but also appeals to parents as they want their community to be a healthy and sufficient place for their children. The author declares to the council
“Could it be that we are supposed to be talking to the plants and animals, interacting with them, accepting the gifts they offer, and using them in ways that further their growth?”(Starhawk, 162). I feel this quote from “Our Place in Nature” is a great way to start the topic of how artists uses plant life in their work. It shows how artists might try to interact with the environment for ideas on the works that they come up. I feel also that they are trying to be one with the environment. I feel if you spend enough time in nature, you will build a strong connection with everything around you. This comment is justified when Starhawk said, “I can walk into any forest where the trees are strange and understand something about the relationships
For more than fifty years, Northwest Florida State College (NWFSC) has been a vital part of life in the Okaloosa and Walton county areas. In addition to serving the community with adult education and college courses, NWFSC provides the Child Development & Education Center, Collegiate High School, AmeriCorps, Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance, and Mattie M. Kelly Cultural & Environmental Institute. A natural extension of these programs would be an on campus NWFSC Garden. The dictionary definition of a garden is “1) a plot of ground, usually near a house, where flowers, shrubs, vegetables, fruits, or herbs are cultivated. 2) a piece of ground or other space, commonly with ornamental plants, trees, etc., used as a park or other public recreation
Politicians need to be more open to allowing vacant lots to be turned into gardens that can be used by the community.
再这样的情况下, St Klida Health Centre proposes to develop the Veg Out community garden targeted at children and local families who live in the community.
I did not think that this project would amount to much, it was a struggle, and took more effort than everyone expected. We knew that it would be difficult to get the basics planned, to get donations, and to finalize details but I did not think it would be that difficult every step of the way. Going to class most of the semester made me anxious because I knew that it would end in heated arguments and people leaving upset and not much progress. I do not handle conflict well; it stresses me out and when everyone begins fighting it leads to me feeling helpless. After this class and this project, I have learned to handle this stress better and that even though I am a quiet person I can still have a say in how things are handled.
The owners who have to pay the bills for the facility might be opposed as well. The property being destroyed is a big impact on the property value, but in place of the destroyed ground there will be a beautiful garden in its place. The garden growing will take a while to reach a beautiful peak, but once it gets there it will make everything worth it, from a chance at fresh air for the illegal aliens to food for the homeless. The gardens will not be a nuisance to the grounds as long as it is placed in the back of the facility. The owners of the facility would not have to worry about paying for the expenses of the caretaking of the gardens because the government will provide all the necessary things to keep up with it. Both the property owner and the facility owner will have nothing to worry about because everything will be paid for by the government. Granted the estimated cost to start up a community garden will be around $7,500 (Evans), the majority of that could be reduced if the surrounding churches donated a lot of the supplies needed. With the help of the government and the community churches, the people who fear the creation of the gardens will have nothing to worry
It is indicated that the community development intervention was associated with the involvement of residents from the communities, relationship building, health benefits, and economic benefits. Although many of them did not speak English we were able to use non-verbal language and professionalism to effectively communicate. When the children got out of school and the adults got off of work I noticed that they would stand around during gardening to pass time and ask questions. One of the residents that belong to the community was able to come admit that the project motivated him to clean his yard and take more responsibility for how his community look. In return we were respectful and grateful for their participation. This project revealed that the relationship building method allowed the Briar Forest community value their relationship with project
Many families in today’s society struggle to make ends meet periodically. However, many families live at or below the poverty line and struggle to provide basic needs for themselves on a regular basis. Even though programs such as Supplemental Food Assistance Program (SNAP) and Women, Infants, Children (WIC) are in place to assist these families, most families still have a gap in the budget to provide food consistently for an entire month. Many communities have implemented community gardens to help bridge the gap. In addition to easing the financial burden of this group in the community, it has also been shown to improve overall physical and emotional health (Hale, Knapp, Barwell, Buchenau,
I have been a true advocate of giving back and being a humble humanitarian. Given the opportunity to go from intern to associate for a non profit organization,"Trap Garden", where our mission is to empower low income communities by assisting with revitalization and the creation of community gardens, community involvement, providing cooking demonstrations that are free for residents to attend while receiving a recipe with fresh produce from local markets in Nashville. I want to allow individuals to know agriculture isn't just farming, it's beyond those limitations. Agriculture involves business, biotechnology, engineering, nutrition, and so much more! I am a mover who promotes sustainable educational programs about agriculture, healthy eating,
A community garden is a piece of land that is gardened within a group of people from the community. The community garden allows people to grow their own food on their own portion of the land to encourage fresh produce and herbs. The level of health in many people have declined over the years (Role of Community Gardens, para 1). Many factors such as less physical activity and poor nutrition are taking the blame for low health levels. A win-win situation for both of these factors includes creating a community garden. Poor nutrition is a huge factor in levels of health because of over consumption of foods. (Role of Community Gardens, para 1). In disadvantaged communities, people have taken a liking to community gardens because the food production
The South Carolina Botanical Gardens really encourages people to experience and appreciate the outdoors and they say discover a place “where nature and culture meet.” The gardens extend their services to people of all ages free of charge and even have a children’s garden that is intended to peak children’s interest and curiosity about the outdoors. The garden also provides programs throughout the years for children and families and even holds monthly “First Friday Nature Walks” that are for adults. Amazingly they also teach classes that allow adults to learn about sustainable gardening. Finally throughout the year the garden holds plant sales usually in the fall and spring hoping to bring the community out to the gardens. One of the workers at the South Carolina Botanical Gardens that I was able to interact with and work with was named Kathy Bridges and she was the Landscape Manager. Not only does she maintain the landscape but she is also held responsible for organizing students to work for the gardens and volunteering along with the payroll of workers at the gardens. If one is curious to learn more about the South Carolina Botanical Gardens they can learn more on their website at
With over 100 neighborhoods and around three million people, Chicago is known for its diversity and culture. But, many communities in Chicago, specifically southern neighborhoods, are food desserts. These areas where fresh affordable produce is difficult to acquire. Community gardening is an effort that provides a space to strengthen relationships while simultaneously providing physical aid to food insecure people. Community gardens have been rising in popularity and for good reason. These gardens not only provide aid and allow growth for comminutes, but also help combat climate change and its negative effects.
Keats says, “A thing of beauty is a joy for ever.” Flowers are also a thing of beauty and joy for ever. Our beloved world poet Tagore claims, ‘nowhere would thou find such a land, queen of all lands, my beloved motherland.’ Flowers are loved by one and all. I think, there is hardly any person who does not love flowers. Flowers may be called the queen of beauties of nature. They add enormously to the surpassing beauty of Bangladesh. Our poets and writers are captivated by their eye-catching beauty. They fill their hearts with soft emotions and feelings for both truth and beauty. They become inclined to compose writings about them. To quote a beautiful rhyme, “Fuler gandhe ghum ase na akla jage roi,” the same spirit is also found in the expression of tagore, “flowers? In the flower garden? No, thou shall not find it there. Search your heart and thou shall find spring therein.” In fact, flowers enlighten our mind, heart and soul with a spiritual light blended with delicate
Prior to the advent and isolation of specific chemical compounds that could keep away pests and disease while stimulating plant growth, all agriculture would have been "organic." It is therefore erroneous to speak of the history of organic farming as distinct from agricultural history in general. The history of chemical-dependent agro-business, on the other hand, can be discussed from a historical perspective. The term organic is used mainly in opposition to the overuse and misuse of toxic chemical compounds such as herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizers. These chemicals seep into groundwater, thereby creating long-term and potentially irreversible public health problems. There are also "unknown risks" associated with the use of genetically-modified organisms in agriculture (Delate, n.d.).
