December of 2009 in snowy New York City, NY at the Apollo theatre. This has been my first competition at the Apollo theatre and I was extremely nervous. I was the youngest jumper to go that year and my group was overwhelmingly underprepared and over excited. All the older kids were proud of us so far based on how we had acted and carried ourselves at such a young age. Especially considering we had driven through a blizzard which prolonged our trip from an eight hour drive to a 17 hour drive from Chapel Hill, NC to New York, NY.
I never took myself as much of an actress, even though I chose the role. Every day, I go in the dressing room and put on my costume. My hair and makeup were done, and it’s show time. The bright spotlight comes directly onto me. The curtains open and it begins. I give the performance of a lifetime. It’s amazing how much the audience believes the story they’re being told. They’re gullible, but they’re not dumb. They know when the show goes sideways and that’s when they begin to ask questions. As always, I reassure them nothing is wrong, and the act is a hit. The curtains close, I return to my dressing room, and I take off the costume. I wish I could give the role back.

Dance is a universal language, there are no words being said but you can still feel something very powerful. Dance has been around for centuries, some of the earliest known records are paintings from nine thousand years ago in India. There are also some dancing figures from an Egyptian tomb that were found which were dated back to three thousand, three hundred BC. It is said that before the invention of written language, dance was the most powerful method to tell stories throughout generations. Is this why dance is still around after so many years, because it can portray amazing stories with no words?
