Constantin Stankislavski and Uta Hagan are considered to be two greats in the art of acting. After reading the excerpts from the packet, and the chapters in the book it is really understandable as to why they are so respected in this art. When taking a look into their work there are some similarities about their craft and technique, however there are also some differences, as Utah Hagen branched out as did many others. In this paper, I’ll be taking a look at where these pioneers of their craft share similar methods, and where they differentiate in the use of their technique.
Theatre has been a significant part of my life for as long as I can remember. It exposes you to a manifold of distinct worlds. I have always been extremely fascinated with the way a show comes together. Between the music, the story, the costumes, and the choreography, I have always dreamed of living my life on the stage and being under the spotlight. However, the “spotlight” isn’t the only option and it is a bumpy road to success.
The summer of 2015 was spent on doing a play at Kelsey theater and going on vacation with family to Canada, India, Germany and Italy. The theater act was memorable because I had one of my longest lead role which required me to depict emotional ups and down, humor, exasperation and frustration all at the same time. Getting into the character was proving difficult as the personality that I was impersonating was totally different from mine. I spent hours trying to perfect the emotion and dialogues. I recorded myself, watching and improving while taking inputs from others. The play helped me see things from someone else’s point of view. The vacations after this event was a welcome change where I experienced the cultural diaspora, regional food
The above example illustrates not only how the theatrical performance affects the audience, but also how the audience influences its dynamics, development and the characters within it. The actors feel a certain level of acceptance from the viewer, who demands a certain way of depicting the character. Theatre is not just entertainment, itís something much more than that ñ itís education. Theatre should always represent things, rather than

Actor Michael Caine’s biography imparts impressive, but comprehensible knowledge onto his readers. Unlike, other books on acting methods, Caine’s writing puts acting tips into relatable and oftentimes humorous terms. Not to diminish Stanislavsky or Hagen, but Caine’s writing acts as a fundamental meat and potatoes manual to which any theatrical student can relate. Caine focuses little on the proper pedagogy of acting theory. Instead, he simply shares the tips he has accumulated over the years on how to perform well not only on screen, but also off screen. The book specifically lends itself to actors, like myself, who are learning the crucial differences between the two mediums: theatre and film. Caine understands the mental leap required for
What is theater? Theater is a collaborative form of fine art that uses live performers, normally actors presenting a live or fake experience of a real or fake event in front of a live audience in a room, and normally up on a stage. The bare- essentials for a theater to be successful are, the audience, the actors, a stage to perform on, and a story. Getting people together in one place to watch a group of actors, led by the director, act out a true or fictional story takes experience; but, it also takes talent. The role has to fit with the actors personality. If an actor has a dull personality, do not put that actor in a role where the actor must have a very bright and outgoing personality.
Last but not least the overall environment is different between stage and screen acting. Since you are performing live you usually have more rehearsal time, you can bond with your cast, and have time to experiment with the director your role before opening night. Screen roles are completely different, you get very little, if any, rehearsal time. For another, depending on the size of the role, you may not receive any help. Films hire actors under the thinking that they will come to set performance-ready. For me I would be nervous to perform in front of hundreds of people.
In theatre Actors, Directors, and Designers all play a very unique and significant role in making a performance successful. Each of them are responsible for different aspects of the play which is what makes their role and contribution artistic. Since their roles will differ each uses different techniques or ways to prepare, practice, and improve their contribution.
Theater has been around since the 6th century BC created by a man named Thespis. Thespis was a priest of Dionysus who was the god of fertility and wine. During a choral production Thespis stepped forward and spoke the words or Dionysus as Dionysus, this made Thespis the first actor. According to historians, Thespis was also the first winner of a theater award. He won the competition for tragic theater held in Athens in 534 BC. Theatrical festivals and contests became a regular feature for the Greeks, those traditions continue today with thespian festivals all over the country. Places all over the world have started thespian troupes where they focus on the art of theater and these troupes are named after the father of theater, Thespis.

As a child, one tends to impersonate through miming, singing, acting those living and imaginary characters of one’s mind. However, as a one gets older, society through education would establish boundaries to have access and use of our own imagination. These boundaries define our behavior until we get constricted and somehow fear to use our imagination as adults. Having those social restrictions in mind, some adults do not lose their sensitivity to see, analyze and impersonate characters from their imagination or from a play script. The best place created to experience that creativity of imagination with no boundaries is in the theater. Theater deriving from the Greek word as “place to see” is a place where people

While I was chowing down on my scrumptious breakfast like I hadn’t eaten in months the leaders of the camp explained to us with big grins on their faces that could not be trusted what was going to happen today “Alright everyone today we will have a relax day so we will walk to the market have some free time there, come back and play some fun mini games and…” I swore their grins got even bigger like the joker had just killed batman “We will be doing a theatre night!” “Uuggghhhhh,” chorused every single poor unfortunate soul in the room. I was alright with a theatre night since I had some experience in drama club but there was no way in hell I was going to perform in front of everyone.
