I was able to increase my knowledge of Spanish ever since my parents decided to enroll me at Osborn Two-Way Immersion program. Osborn Two-Way Immersion program is the main reason my Spanish and English improved. I was able to enhance my speaking, reading, writing, and listening skills in both Spanish and English. Due to Osborn's great program the school has been rapidly growing over these past few years. The school has made a huge impact in the community and in my education. Entering High School I was recommended to take AP Spanish language and culture. I learned that language and culture are intertwined in the sense of context. For example, if a student is learning a language without having cultural background knowledge, the student may use
By providing different learning experiences in the curriculum teachers will be able to meet the needs of each student’s learning style. For ELL students, New Caney Elementary offers Bilingual programs dedicated to teach both languages, Spanish and English, that will essentially allow ELL students to learn the language. Programs like these were created to help students to thrive academically no matter their circumstance. To assess students at all times, one as a future educator must ensure that we are assessing the students in each lesson plan. The teacher must ensure that each student is grasping the content presented to them by monitoring their gained knowledge. In order implement the units from the curriculum, I will strive to provide various learning experiences to each student. I will provide visual activities for my visual learners, have hands on activities for my hands-on learning students, and provide discussions for the ones that learn through hearing and repeating things out loud. Each learning experience is crucial to the student’s academic success. By providing different types of learning experiences I will be able to make the lessons more effective and
Speaking Spanish or any second language opens a lot of doors in life. While the little Spanish I do know is incomprehensible to most fluent Spanish-speakers, it has helped me in some situations. The article Se Habla Espanol by Tanya Maria Barrientos is the story on how she (Tanya) dealt with the tribulations of being born in Guatemala, moved to and raised in the United States, and attempting to learn her native Language once again (Barrientos 645). While many of us, including Tanya, have difficulties learning a new language and understanding others cultures, the struggle will prove to be worth it in the end.
It is beneficial for bilingual students to be taught in both their native language and in English to assimilate with ease into the American educational system. Gonzalez demonstrates how Native Americans, especially the Cherokees implemented English in their curriculum while also teaching them their own language. This form of teaching did not only teach
Even though my mother was Mexican it was hard for me to speak to my friends who knew mostly Spanish and a little English because Spanish was not my first language. As years went on, I went to high school, where now I can have a full conversation with my Spanish speaking friends, and since it is an international high school, it brings in more cultural diversity. With this international high school in El Paso, it has helped me learn new cultures and experience the dozens of traits they do for activities or how they celebrate
In addition, learning Spanish will break the language barrier between myself and all the Spanish-speakers of the world, which I find remarkable. I cannot imagine a more efficient method to achieve bilingualism than complete submersion in Spanish language and culture. For this reason, I have decided to study abroad in Costa Rica for six weeks in the summer of 2016. Over these six weeks, I will take two Spanish courses at the Latin University of Costa Rica, and live with a host family in which I will communicate with only through Spanish. I am certain that I will return from this voyage with more confidence in my Spanish-speaking capabilities, greater knowledge of the language, a heightened passion and appreciation for Costa Rican culture, experiences that will be applicable throughout my life and future career, and memories that I will cherish forever. Moreover, I anticipate that by studying Spanish and studying abroad, I will acquire valuable communication skills in both Spanish and English, become more competitive with my peers, and diversify and enhance the overall knowledge that I will acquire from Oklahoma State
In and outside of the classroom, learning about both the Spanish language and culture has always interested me. To delve myself into the culture, I decided to join Spanish Club and the Spanish National Honors Society, both which allowed me to experience and better understand the eccentric Hispanic culture.
Language and culture coincide and go in harmony with each other. “Our culture is what shapes our language and our language is much more than just a tool; it is a rink to our surroundings that determines how we are perceived and understood. ”(Tuncer 1) Spanish is such an fundamental
To increase my knowledge of Spanish I speak it frequently at home, along with other family members and they help and correct me whenever I use a word improperly or pronounce a word incorrectly. In addition to that, I practice in school with the classes I used to take such as A.P. Spanish Language and Literature. Before that, I was enrolled in the Dual Immersion program which gave me the chance to continue practicing Spanish until high school. With learning Spanish comes the benefit of learning about the different cultures in education and outside of school. School helps increase the knowledge I have about a culture in which they give examples of how Spanish culture fits into learning the language itself. For example, in A.P. Spanish Literature
As a child, I was raised within a Catholic Cuban American family and because of this, my family took great pride in sending me to a Catholic private school until I finally graduated to a university level of learning. During my years in private school, my family always told me to pay special attention to my Spanish class in particular because knowing more than one language is very essential
I have learned a lot in the last 3 years from the workers at the restaurant, probably more Spanish than any class could teach me. I will say again, I really learned a lot in the Education Psychology class. I never knew that I had culture, but being a young female white woman in a middle class society is culture. It’s my culture and I learned about multiple other cultures that exist even at Indiana State University. We are a very diverse school with Americans, whites, blacks, Indians, Arabians, Chinese, Japanese, Russians, etc. We learn at a young age people are different than us and to treat them the way we want to be treated. We learn that different cultures have different foods, and some speak different languages other than English. I don’t have much background with different languages because I didn’t take any foreign language classes while attending
Language is the problem that has existed in the past and continues to exist in the present. There are many students that speak only one language at home, for example, some students their parents speak only Spanish. These students faced when they learn English a second language at school. Dual-Language is very successful for students that speak one language. This program is great option to learn both language English and Spanish at the same time. Dual-Language consist in 50 percent is imparted in English and other 50 percent is imparted in Spanish.
The two-way dual immersion is still being used today but is not as popular as it has been in the past. “Two-way Bi-lingual Immersion (TWBI) reinforces positive cross-cultural attitudes as well as bilingualism” (Two-Way Bilingual Immersion Program). The purpose of this type of program is to transition, development and maintenance of students. I think this a great program and should be used in the lower grade levels more so that they have a chance at retaining what they are learning for their future. I live in Texas and the district I work in only has one elementary school that is bi-lingual and I believe it should offer it more to the others as well. I can see that the Two-way program will benefit both ELL students as well as ESL students.
Children gain great academics from learning Spanish in school. Many people are to limit what young non graduated students learn and impede them from being capable of learning Spanish. Why would they stop them from learning? Parents think that America should be an English only speaking country and wouldn’t appreciate a foreign language to be involved. I believe it makes you more intelligent in various ways. I say that for the sake of children learning Spanish at such a young age gives them a huge advantage in college. “ Studies on language development, however, show that the more exposure young children have to all languages actually gives them a distinct
With the spanish major, I improved my language skills and my knowledge of the
In the lottery of languages, The Spanish was given during my growth in Colombia. I recognize that I learn Spanish grammar as a University student rather than a Basic/middle or High school students, since the focus was different. As natives, we were educated to communicate, no much rules. But at undergrad, during my linguistics emphasis it was a requirement to know basic grammar to start, then to learn complex linguistics and didactics of the language (for teaching the native Speakers and the non-native of Spanish)
