Bobby Ray, who has the stage name B.o.B, was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, on November 15, 1988 and moved to Atlanta, which is now what he calls his hometown. B.o.B is a self proclaimed rapper, singer/songwriter, and is often compared to André 3000, an eccentric person, like B.o.B, in the group Outkast, which is also from Georgia. B.o.B was always interested in music, as he played the trumpet during elementary school and high school, and he was first recognized when he sold some of his songs to Citty. His first widely recognized mixtape, Cloud 9, was released in 2006 and introduced him to the world. Now with a great career as a producer, he strived for more success as a rapper and started to record his tracks. During the production of Jay Z’s The Blueprint 2, Kanye recorded a verse for the track “The Bounce” which was then decided by Jay Z to leave on the final version regardless of his opinion on Kanye’s rap career. Outkast in my opinion is easily the greatest duo in hip-hop history. The music that Big Boi and Andre 3000 have created are timeless, and they are one of the few acts to provide us with multiple classic albums over their career. As fans do with every group in music, listeners always pick one individual that they believe is the key to the groups’ success. Which can also be looked at as the Michael Jackson, Justin Timberlake, or Beyonce effect. Andre 3000 is the one that seems to attract the most attention and with that, people hold him up as hip-hop royalty as an individual. While I’m honestly a fan of Andre, I’m in the minority of people who don’t hold him to the same standards as other elite rappers.
“…he was the Internet” (Garvey). DeAndre Cortez Way, known to the public as Soulja Boy, is an American rapper and record producer self-published the hit debut single – “Crank That” – in 2007 through his MySpace and later on the album, souljaboytellem.com. Soulja Boy’s, who was only sixteen years old at that time, song became a success, topping the Billboard Hot 100 for seven weeks in the United States (Soulja). The song had every component that made it popular during this time, as the popularity of “traditional” hip hop, particularly rap and R&B, was declining – it was released through the internet, where everyone was flocking to as radios were declining, and the increasing influence of dances crazes were the in, which the song promoted.
I changed my mind about rap music. Growing up, I never really liked it, the quick beats, the vast usage of inappropriate words not equipped for my adolescent ears disgusted me. I associated rap music as being "dirty," only discussing explicit topics and having no real meaning. While everyone else in high school was blaring Drake and Lil Wayne in the parking lots, I was perfectly okay with listening to Demi Lovato or John Legend. During my sophomore year of high school, my friend kept pestering me to listen to the Hamilton soundtrack, and even though the songs were raps, I realized I loved it. Eventually, I started to not associate all rap music as detrimental and discovered that some rappers rapped about important messages of adversity, conflict, and pain. This lead me to listen to Chance the Rapper's "Coloring Book, " Childish Gambino's "Red Bone and J Cole's "4 Your Eyez Only." I realized that rap is just poetry with accompaniment, poetry that has the rhythm and style to bring generations of people together.
