Just how weird or strange are humans? You think of the outcasts in society and wonder just why are they considered outsiders. Are they really outcast or are they simply just misunderstood human beings. Some of our most brilliant people in the world were outcasts and strange, but overall they were seen as downright weird. Why do humans have to name these people we do not understand? We sometimes think of outsiders as people with mental disorders ,but many people with these disorders are geniuses such as Lewis Carroll. Outsiders are simple misunderstood people because most of them are geniuses. Outsiders are misunderstood geniuses. There are many people who have contributed significantly to the intellectual world. For example Ben Franklin, “he said to have favored air baths”(130). Franklyn would sit in a room that was cold and wear nothing which is regarded as very strange and peculiar in the normal, natural world. This gets Mr. Franklin considered odd and an outsider, but he is one of the greatest minds of English thinking for his correlation between lighting and the fact that it conducts electricity. Franklin invented the lightning rod, which is an instrumental device that would prevent fires thanks to Franklin’s connection between steel and attraction to lightning. Moreover, Franklin had made some of the utmost important discoveries of the time even though Franklin was an outcast. Franklin created his own alphabet “dispensing with the letters c,j,q,w,x, and y,and adding
is that there are outsiders in today’s society. When one is made into an outsider, the bias
An outsider is defined as “a person who does not belong to a particular group.” In the book, The Outsiders, many of the characters can be described as being an outcast from the social society. Ponyboy, Johnny, and Cherry are outsiders in this novel because none of them really fit into the groups that they’re “supposed” to be in.
An outsider is someone who is not accepted or is isolated from society. ‘Of Mice and Men’ is set in the 1930’s, where society considered many people as outsiders. During this period, many people were racist, sexist and prejudice towards disabled people. This is shown with several characters in the novel including Crooks, Curly’s wife and Candy who are all considered as outsiders in this novel, since they each had something that the society at that time were prejudice towards.
Outsiders are simply those who are misjudged for who they are as a person. The concept of being misjudged is explained through the story of Gregor in “The Metamorphosis” by Franz Kafka, a short story on how Gregor becomes isolated from his family and society after his metamorphosis into a bug because of how he acted prior to his transformation. Corresponding with this story, the video “Franz Kafka and Metamorphosis” from BBC explains how this narrative is accurate to how society changes people into something they do not intend on becoming. Excerpts from these two sources show how society misjudges people who are considered outsiders due to changes that disrupt familiarity and how society conforms these outsiders into people who would otherwise act in a different manner.
The first reason why Outsiders are just simply misunderstood is that society doesn't accept “different people”. There are different social groups in high school. Say there is a group of kids who had a good wealthy background, and then there is a kid who has a poor and not so great background. Because he is different from the richer kids he isn't accepted. Kids don't like “different” people. This isn't only kids, it happens in any age group. For example in “The Metamorphosis” by Franz Kafka, Gregor was an adult who looked different from the others because he
In Ryszard Kapuscinski’s lecture, “Encountering the Other: The Challenge for the 21st Century”, Kapuscinski argues that everyone is part of another group that is deemed the ‘Other’. Kapuscinski states that “Others are indeed Others, but for those Others, I am the one who is Other” (Kapuscinski, 22). Thus, being an outsider is a universal condition since we are all the Other to someone else. However, some might argue that being an outsider is not a universal condition as humans are by nature social animals so being an outsider is a rare occurence. To this, Kapuscinski also states that being an outsider is universal as “...the Other is a mirror into which you peer...a mirror that unmasks and denudes, which we would prefer to avoid” (Kapuscinski, 28). In other words, being an outsider is a universal condition even though humans are social animals because the Other is a reflection of qualities that define a person and humanity in general. The quality of being in outsider is universal as everyone is an outsider to someone else and outsiders are simply reflections of who humanity
One example of an outsider would be Gregor in the famous story “The Metamorphosis” by Franz Kafka. In this story, there are numerous examples of Gregor being misjudged and Gregor feeling misunderstood. The first example is how people view Gregor as a traveling salesman. “People don't like traveling salesmen. I know that. People think they earn pots of money and thus lead a fine life. People don't even have any special reason to think through this judgment more clearly” (Kafka, 148). In this quote, you can clearly see that people are misjudging Gregor because he is a traveling salesman. In the text, Gregor feels that he is misunderstood because none of these people know that Gregor has to work as a traveling salesman not because he wants to, but because he has to pay off his family's debt. Another example is how Gregor’s family assumes things about what he would or would not do. “But how can it be Gregor? If it
Outsiders remain misunderstood geniuses. There are many people who have contributed significantly to the intellectual world. For example Ben Franklin, “he said to have favored air baths”(130). Franklyn would sit in a room that was cold and wear nothing which persists as very strange and peculiar in the normal, natural world. Franklin is considered an outsider, but he is one of the greatest minds of English thinking for his correlation between lighting and the fact that it conducts electricity. Franklin invented the lightning rod, which is an instrumental device that would prevent fires thanks to Franklin’s connection between steel and attraction to lightning. Moreover, Franklin had made some of the utmost important discoveries of the time, even though Franklin was an outcast. Franklin created his own alphabet “dispensing with the letters c,j,q,w,x, and y,and adding
The first reason why “outsiders” are misjudged is because others judge them on where they live, who their parents are, and their social status. Ever since humans have been on earth, we place each other into a socioeconomic status. Certain people might live in a terrible, broken down house in a dangerous part of town, due to not making enough money. Others might be rich, living in a ginormous mansion, and living like a king. The poorer and less fortunate can't often help that they don’t have a lot of money. Yet, some richer people judge these poorer people on things like where they live or how they might dress. This happens a lot more in high schools, although some adults could do this too. Others might judge the “outsider” because of who raised them. The “outsider’s” parents might have had a “troubled past” in the eyes of some people and they might judge the outsider for being their child. It could also be the exact opposite and others could judge the outsider due to their parents being “wealthy” or “snobbish.” People are judged all the time based on lives that they can’t control. An outsider might want to try and create a better life for themselves
What is an outsider? An outsider is a person who is not excepted by or is isolated by society. Have you ever been an “outsider”? Everyone experiences a situation where they weren’t able to fit in. The feeling of not being able to fit it is universal. Not everyone is the same and in certain situations you may not be able to bond with everyone. Everyone is focused on being judged or being the person who is judging someone. If you are not like everyone in your society group, those people don’t except you. Nowadays our society feels that if you aren’t up to people’s expectations, you are known to be an “outsider”. Being an outsider is universal because not everyone is social, not everyone can afford nice things and not everyone is popular.
An outsider is someone who stands out from the crowd. They have their own beliefs, their own way or thinking. Standing out is often thought of in a negative way, but it can bring along many positive things. During the time period of Martin Luther King Jr., there were many protestors who began to stand up for themselves and their race. Even though many people did it, there were only a few people who started the movement, and those people, were outsiders. Two people who were outsiders from that time period were Jackie Robinson and Rosa Parks. They stood against normal beliefs and tried to change the way of life, which is what many outsiders do. An outsider is not simply someone who is misjudged or misunderstood.
Are outsiders simply those who are misjudged or misunderstood? Human beings are perhaps the most unique species in the world. People have diverse backgrounds, cultures and languages. Everyone also has a distinct personality, appearance, and stories to tell. Although humans are all different in their own way, they tend to associate themselves with people who share alike personality traits or share common interests .
S.E Hilton’s inspirational book, Outsiders, is about a boy named Ponyboy and his best friends as they go on an adventure that will change them forever. I compared Ponyboy to myself and noticed many similarities and differences between the two of us. We are similar when it comes to social character, sports, grades, and even courage. Even though we have some similarities, we also have our differences when it comes to time period, freedom, generosity, and organization. I enjoyed comparing and contrasting Ponyboy to myself because he taught me that even though life can be tough, if you look on the bright side of things, you can find happiness once again.
Homelessness has become a fundamental issue in many societies today. This type of problem is overlooked since it does not reflect the norms and values of our society. In many cases homeless people are treated as total outcasts as demonstrated in Giosue Petrone’s “Invisible”. In the film, the protagonist isn’t seen by society due to his homelessness. Social outcasts are disliked, discriminated against and stereotyped heavily. Hence, the primary them of the short film is being a social outcast because of the reaction that the bystanders give the homeless man.
Albert Camus presents ideas of identity and the human condition in his classic novel The Outsider, through his exploration of gender and cultural representations as well as an insight into absurdum and existentialism. These concepts of identity and the human condition reflect on the society in which the novella has been set, demonstrating how women, those of other cultures and those who are considered to be different are represented. The novella tells a recollection of events of a young man named Meursault, emotionally detached from a society where he refuses to conform to society’s conventions and in turn a refusal to ‘play the game’. The novella begins with the death of Meursault’s mother and ends with his
