Has there ever been a point in your life that made you feel like a failure? If you have ever felt this way, you are not alone. Several well-known people, such as Wilbur Wright and Steve Jobs, have dealt with adversity. Wilbur Wright and his brother created the first successful airplane, and it definitely was not easy. Steve Jobs was the founder of Apple, and dealt with many difficult events along the way. We have all had moments in life that we found difficult to overcome. When these events occur, we must choose to be resilient. When times get tough, resilience is key to overcoming adversity and achieving success. Several well-known people have been resilient. One of these people is Steve Jobs. Steve Jobs had to deal with adversity several times during the course of his career. After reading an article about a speech he gave, I learned that Steve definitely did not have a simple road to his accomplishments. As stated in his speech, “But then our visions of the future began to diverge and eventually we had a falling out… what had been the focus of my entire adult life was gone, and it was devastating.” (Jobs, 11) As this quotation implies, Steve was faced with a huge setback in his career. He realized that what he had been working on for so long was gone, but even so, he didn’t let himself give up on his future. After he realized his reality, he began to bounce back into his journey to success. If he had not done so, he would never have been the successful man he became. Later on in his speech, we learned devastating news about him. In the article it says, “About a year ago, I was diagnosed with cancer.” (Jobs, 19) As I’m sure we can all assume, being diagnosed with cancer would not be the most enjoyable thing that could happen to someone. Although, because Steve Jobs was full of resilience, he did not let this news get in the way of everything he wanted to do. Without it, many things wouldn’t exist today. By overcoming challenges, we learn from our mistakes and are better prepared for our future.
