In today’s world’s population there are about 285 million people who are blind or visually impaired and this number is increasing rapidly, so it is crucial to create new devices to make their lives easier. Since 1921, the most common mobility aid for blind people has been the white cane and it was recognized as a tool to also alert people that the individual using it was visually impaired (Philip strong, 2009). However, white canes can only detect obstacles at ground level and anything within 1m of the user which is a big downside of this tool and is the reason why there are researches on designing more efficient mobility aids for the visually impaired. The main aim of designing practical tools for the blind, is to enable them to move …show more content…
The main feature of this tool is that it detects the shape of the road by getting information through sensors and it notifies the user when any obstacles or unknown places are detected by the vibrating motor on its handle (Ultracane, 2011). The type of sensors used in ultracanes are called ultrasonic sensors which are transmitters and receivers of ultrasound. The way they operate is that ultrasound waves are sent from the sensors and reflected waveforms indicate different sizes of objects and obstacles and according to this information the user will get notified is they have to change their direction or path. Ultrasonic sensors are favourable in electronic aid devices and it is due to their cost-effectiveness and light weight (Carullo A.; Parvis M. 2001). In addition, ultracanes have two different modes of sensors which are for detecting knee and ground level obstacles and they also have replaceable cane tips and batteries. The obstacle detection range for these canes are 1.6 meters in the upward direction and within 4 meters of handle in the forward direction which is almost four times more than traditional white canes thus, it gives blind people more freedom of mobility with increased safety and speed (Ultracane, 2011). Using Assistive Technology tools, people with dementia can remain independent for as long as possible. It is important for a person with dementia who can take care themself when they are alone.
“Through Deaf Eyes” was a documentary that really opened my eyes and allowed me to understand just a small fraction of what it may be like for a Deaf person to live in a hearing world. The first thing that really stuck with me was the fact that the film was all silent. The part that made it easy for me to understand was the fact that there was closed captioning. All throughout the film, all participants, both Deaf and hearing, were signing at what seemed like lightning speed. If it were not for the closed captioning, there was no way I would be able to catch up and really engage in the film. Then it hit me: this must be how Deaf people feel if the situation was reversed. I always used to get irritated
Deaf-blind can also use a screen Braille communicator, a small portable device that enables them to communicate with sighted people. Alternate communication is print on palm, the person communicating with the deaf-blind person prints large block letters on the other persons hand. Each letter is written in the same location on the persons hand. This is a way for the deaf-blind to communicate with the public.
Even with the legislative measures taken to assist those who are blind, those with significant visual impairments still face oppression. According to Iris Marion Young, oppression “designates the disadvantage and injustice some people suffer not because a tyrannical power coerces them, but because of the everyday practices of a well-intentioned liberal society” (Adams, p 36). People who are blind face oppression when navigating the internet. There are many programs that aid those with vision issues- Braille keyboards and audio and text converters. However, these programs do not always work with websites. At the moment, no government standards exist in the United States (Williams). This is a problem because the internet is a very large part of society. The internet holds the keys to financial needs, educational advancement, and social interactions. Therefore, legislation needs to be passed to make the digital world as
The society questions why it is so challenging to communicate with foreigners. "The Country of the Blind" is a short story first published in 1904 by H.G. Wells. He is well known for his science fiction novels. This short story is focusing on sight and blindness and brings up the theme of prejudice versus learning. In the novel we follow a traveller, who ends up in an unfamiliar strange place, which set him in learning trail, figuring out who he really is. How does the writer illustrate the difficulties with foreigners in this short story?
Braille – This is helpful for blind people to be able to read and understand what they may need to read or even to communicate to people if they are also blind. There are lots of items that come in braille now.
Braille is also a form of written language for blind people or raised marks helping visually impaired people and those with hearing difficulty communicate by reading or writing. Braille benefit in a nursing home by making communication easy and meeting requirement. For example eye range of signs and direction signs. However there may be Individuals that have communication disabilities this means they are not able to communicate effectively with their health care specialists and this could have an effect on their health. Good communication is the base to effective relationship for instants between a service user and their health carer, both through verbal or non-verbal communication. Non-verbal communication is type of interpersonal interaction
Fortunately, there are numerous resources available for people with disabilities that offer assistance and programs to meet their everyday needs. The Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind serves as an educational resource for individuals who are deaf, blind, deaf-blind, and multi-disabled. I decided to research this agency because it has been referenced in my communicative disorders classes. As a future speech language pathologist, I want to learn about this agency and discover the programs it offers to help me with my future clients. The Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind is relative to this course because as mentioned in the textbook and other course material, resources and programs that offer assistance to individuals with disabilities are essential to their successful futures. This agency is a means in which people who are deaf and blind can seek assistance to improve their skills of communication, and this is ultimately my goal as a speech language pathologist.

First, those leaders who demonstrate a colorblind perspective do so in varied ways. The variation is characterized by a version of what Bonilla-Silva refers to as minimization. According to Bonilla-Silva, the issue of minimization is that while “whites and blacks believe discrimination is still a problem, they dispute its salience as a factor explaining blacks’ collective standing” (p. 91). Among these leaders, minimization occurs in two types of school settings – either school settings with small populations of students of color or diverse high-poverty settings. In these settings, race is constructed as a non-issue or as insignificant in comparison to poverty and therefore ignored.
According to the Oxford Dictionary, the definition of blind is “unable to see; sightless” (Definition of Blind in English, 2015). However, I do not like to be put in such a box. I define blindness as merely a heightening of other senses. What do you think of when you hear the word sight? More than likely you think of shapes, colors, and objects. My idea of sight consists of many senses; smell, touch, sounds, those are the things that I “see” with. How about the word blind; what do you think of then? The most common relation to the word blind is disabled; however, we are a very abled people. Even though I carry a cane among my person I get through my daily life just as any other able-bodied human being (Question 1).
The Vasteras Giraff is a new breakthrough in the healthcare industry. Through new innovation that has been developed by Giraff Technologies of Sweden, communication could be changed forever. This device is essentially a mobile communication tool with wheels, a camera, and a monitor—all remote controlled. Think of it as a two-way video communication system on wheels. Its main function is to provide the housebound or elderly with a communication system. I believe this device is a positive solution to an ongoing problem as the population continues to age, and there is more need for home healthcare. This robot helps elderly people communicate with the outside world without leaving their home.
There is a critical shortage of guide animals for the blind and guide horses are an appropriate assistance animal for thousands of visually impaired people in the USA. In early experiments, Guide Horses have shown great promise as a mobility option, and people who have tried Guide Horses report that the Guide Horses perform exceptionally well at keeping their person safe. These friendly horses provide an experimental alternative mobility option for blind people. People who have tried Guide Horses report that the horses demonstrate excellent judgment and are not easily distracted by crowds and people.
The examples of “Color Blind” politics from government and housing market are the “key” evidence in author's argument. In side of government, it uses three tools to help the segregation, as reading describes. For instance, the transforming white people into the true victims of racial inequality, the proposing a meritocratic society to perpetuate segregation and black subordination, and the channeling racial hatred through code words are the three kinds of policy tools that drive segregation forward. In side of housing market, the gentrification, as a new force of coercive segregation, has been created in real estate market. Rich people buying up the old real estate in poorer neighborhoods that seem more valuable and convenient to work. When
— Elderly people suffering from Dementia and Alzheimer meet with a progressive cognitive decline making them experience hardship in performing their everyday conventional activities especially in their outdoor navigation as they tend to forget landmarks even in familiar environments due to gradual decline in their memory and thinking abilities. Hence, disorientation and wandering become common issue. Providing assistive guidance to the elderly people in their outdoor mobility has become a challenging task for caretakers and family members as most of the elders prefer to live independently. Thus, there arises a need for efficient solutions that can monitor the elderly people movements and notify the caretakers in the event of disorientation or wandering being detected.
