It is hard to clearly define PBIS because is a framework or practicum to help manage student behavior and assist in further prevention of unacceptable behavior like violence or uncheck disrespect. PBIS is an acronym for “Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports. Congress began to introduce practices for behaviorism before more evidence-driven approaches like PBIS. Fixing the preexisting Individuals with Disabilities Education Act both in 1997 and in 2004, Congress recognized the potential of PBIS to prevent exclusion and improve educational results (Marzano n.d.). This is now one of the soundest bases for managing student behavior in the school-wide basis.
“PBIS is defined as a framework for enhancing the adoption and implementation of a continuum (response-to-intervention) of evidence-based interventions to achieve academically and behaviorally important outcomes for all students” (Sugai et al., 2000)
Within this definition, the mutually beneficial relationship between academic and social behavior for student success is highlighted. A school needs to work as a cohesive unit, not only in curriculum and classwork, but also in discipline involving violence and other unacceptable behaviors in the classroom, halls, and any other places under the school’s scope of authority. Solidarity when incorporating PBIS is a cornerstone of its own effectiveness. Not acting is just as damaging as ignorance or enabling. Violence or abuse that is unreported will not effectively support school-wide management. Examples of this are telling yourself, “He’s not my student, I’ll keep a low profile, or It’s none of my business.” Student safety and success will always be foremost, even when it comes to student
