Throughout my life the phrase “physics is all around you” has been thrown around frequently. Especially in the context of my football playing years, I thought physics was simple. For example, my half-witted high school offensive line coach, who I am pretty sure did not go to college, used to scream about leverage and keeping your center of mass low to the ground. In the offseason he wanted us to bulk up because he knew newton’s second law that states force equals mass times acceleration. This did not mean that my friends and I sat in the weight room drawing free body diagrams on how to impose the greatest force with our hands on our opponents, but instead it meant that every day after school we would lift and immediately go find something to eat in order to increase our body …show more content…
My coach’s crude interpretation was not wrong, but a rather simplistic approach. As a result it led me to believe that physics was just a science based on something along the lines of the result of two blocks smashing into each other and trying to figure how far they bounce off each other. It wasn’t until PH201 that I realized that physics is, in my opinion, a supernatural science. I say this because PH201 is the first class that I have taken that I can say bridged the gap between me simply learning objective science material, to not only understanding the material and regurgitating it on a WPR, but also seeing how it applies to my future career as an officer. Physics should be included in West Point’s curriculum for the real life applications and lessons that cadets learn which are vitally crucial to the cadet’s success as officers and the reputation of the
Touch Football is a team sport consisting of 6 players split into two teams on the field at a given time. It is a high intensity game, involving bursts of maximal speed and power. During a game of Touch Football, all three energy systems work towards energy production required for muscular contractions, however the dominant energy system is determined by the intensity and duration of the effort performed.
Can you bend it like Beckham? With the right training, skill, and knowing more about the soccer ball, the individual will! The soccer ball is a very interesting object. A soccer ball has to have a certain amount of air pressure in order to work properly. The air also affects the soccer ball’s flight. The soccer ball is also made of different kinds of material and has different sizes. In the next couple of paragraphs I will tell you more about a soccer ball and the air pressure.
There are three main energy systems used in a game of touch football which consist of the creatine phosphate (ATP PC) system, lactic acid system and the aerobic system. Each system plays a vital role during game play. Every muscle in your body requires energy to perform all movements, and to do this, the energy is produced by the breakdown of a molecule called adenosine triphosphate (ATP). ATP is found in all cells which is a chemical form of muscular activity and performs mostly all functions in the human body. It contains 3 phosphate groups and adenosine. ATP is stored in the muscles and lasts for approximately 10-30 seconds. Carbohydrates, fats and proteins, are all producers of ATP from the food we eat; however Creatine Phosphate is
Evaluation of the Components of Fitness and an Analysis to Their Relevance of Touch Football
The game that America has come to know and love may have more behind it than everyday viewers and fans realize. Physics fuels every aspect of the game of football and is evident in the collisions that take place on every play. Watching a game of football can be a great learning tool to anyone interested in better understanding the laws of physics. Many great examples are provided on every snap. Mass, force, momentum, velocity and torque all play significant roles in the tackling action performed by players and the better you understand these terms the better you can begin to understand the game itself.
High school football over the years has become a huge spectacle lets just talk about the DWF area or we can even get smaller to make a point if you made a 25 mile radius these local high school teams play at the Star (seats 12,000), Allen stadium (seats 18,000 cost 60 million), and McKinney’s new stadium (seats 12,000 costs 69.9 million). This is just high school football these young kids playing under tremendous pressure from the start. The pressure to play high school football is immense, there are so many media outlets for these kids, and they get coverage from what it seems like all the time during the season, yet this is all just considered a recreational activity I think it has become more than that now. The pressure for coaches is high as well dealing with parents, board members, keeping up with classes as a teacher, and oh you also have to win since football is a performance-based business (forewarning this will be said a lot). For example I will refer to Boobie Miles from Friday Night Lights for one final point. Boobie knew if he did not make it in football there was nothing special for him. That is why when he got hurt he still wanted to play, because he knew that’s all he had. That is a lot of pressure for a 16-18 year to handle, and if they are not up for it they crack.
My topic choice for the final essay will be Football Safety Equipment. I decided to write about this topic because I am an athlete and I have played football since I was six years old. When I transfer to a four year college, I plan to play on the collegiate level. As I grew, my father would purchase extra protection in addition to purchasing my own specialized helmet for football. My father did this because he believed Parks and Recreation did not properly maintain their equipment. Also, over the last couple of years there has been quite a few players from little league to the professional league who have suffered concussions. As a result, some medical professionals believe these concussions are linked to CTE (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy).
Limb length has a significant role to play in the success of the tennis serve which can evidently be seen in that over the last few decades the sport of tennis has had few professional players that are shorter than 180cm (McLester & St.Pierre, 2008, p 240).
All athletes regardless of age, gender, genetics or sport can benefit from effective training. It is important that the selected training improves the body’s ability to perform tasks associated with the chosen
Term 3 commenced with each boy studying HPE in year 11, participating in the sport Touch Football. In this subject the cohort has been analysing the relationships between different energy systems and components of fitness that need to be acquired to successfully participate in the physical activity. Components of fitness are described as basic qualities that demonstrate the ability to complete daily tasks with energy, reduced health risks, and participate in a variety of physical activities (1). This presentation will give a thorough reflection on Touch football and what energy systems are of most importance to the sport. I will also be reflecting on the components of fitness that I personally need to work on which is observed from primary data collected in the HPE classes. Also methods of improvement toward specific components of fitness.
Lacrosse is a team sport that originated in the St. Lawrence Valley area, around 1546. It is played with a small rubber ball, a long stick with a sort of basket at the end, and padding (it is a contact sport). The objective of the game is to shoot the ball into the other team’s goal, using the stick to pass, cradle and shoot. At first, the game was played on a distance of even several miles, and anywhere between 100 and 100000 players in a single game. The teams are now composed of ten players each, 3 of them are offense, 3 defense, 3 midfielders, that can go anywhere on the field, and one goalie, which is the heart of the team. In this essay I will focus on the physics that stand behind lacrosse, and how companies that make lacrosse gear use our knowledge and understanding of forces to make padding and helmets that are safer, and sticks that are made for different kinds of play styles (contact defense, precision, fast offense…).
Soccer is a sport that’s very challenging and during the course of this semester I’ve found physics can also be described as challenging. As far as I was concerned soccer and physics were both challenging and that was all they had in common, consequently upon researching them both this semester I found that I was wrong. For me this was nothing new because I’ve found that physics isn’t a subject that can be skimmed, but rather it has to be studied to the finest detail. Those small details if missed can make all your efforts worthless. Or on the positive side understanding those details can make your efforts worth it in the end. And in soccer if you understand the physics, which to most players
There is no question that everything people do in their lives involves physics. This is true from the way we communicate to the way that we fight wars. In some cases the influence of the laws of physics on our world are extremely apparent, such as in sports. Basketball, hockey, baseball and even cricket involve physics. From the most basic motions players perform in the game, to different plays designed by coaches, physics touches it all. These appearances of physics in the games that we play are sometimes so subtle we don’t even notice them. In other cases however, the impact of physics can be heard across the stadium as Jerome “The Bus” Bettis barrels his way into the endzone. The influences of physics on
There are many aspects to the game of basketball and physics can be applied to all of them. Although to be good at basketball it is not necessary to play it from a physics point of view. Basketball players become good by developing muscle memory for the actions that must be performed in the game of basketball from years of practice. Nevertheless knowing some of the physics in the game of basketball can help a good player be a better player. In this paper I will cover the three most important aspects of the game, shooting, dribbling and passing.
When many people think of sports, the topic of physics doesn't always come to mind. They usually don't think about connecting athletics with academics. In reality math, science, and especially physics, tie into every aspect of sports. Sports are a commonality that brings nations together, Soccer, known as football to most of the world, is said to an unspoken language, which unties people from different lands through a passion to play a game. Athletics and sports are made by the people who play, watch, and study them. Without all of the enthusiastic participants, there would be no development, education, and intensity that we all know and love about sports. The one component that reigns over
